Please bring fellow Marines with you to the meetings for possible membership to the League. 2016-2017 Detachment Staff To clarify this public service to our members, this is NOT a delinquent list being published. It is a REMINDER to those members that may not have received a renewal notice from National. Renewals are due in the month of the newsletter. Sr. Vice Advice: I look forward to serving as your Sr. Vice Commandant this year. With the help of all the members, I will learn a lot and better serve the league. I will work with the Jr. Vice on keeping and growing our membership. Invite former Marines and FMF Doc's to meetings or to any of our outings Frank Livingston Sr. Vice Commandant Jr. Vice Commandant s Reminder: This newsletter is for the month of May, so this list is those members whose membership is renewed this month. Those members are: William B. Plassmeyer, Stephen C. Diemler, Kyle Mason, Dalton P. Reuter, Darren P. Reuter, William D. Schmutz, and any member who has not renewed. Chaplain s Chapel: Also I heard the voice of the Lord, saying: "Whom shall I send, and who will go for Us?" Then I said, Here am I! Send me. Isaiah 6:8. I was recently blessed to be able to go on an Honor Flight to Washington, D. C. It was an emotional 24 hour marathon, but what a great experience. Everywhere we went we were made to feel very special and we were held in high regard. Thanks to Bill Plate who, as a Patriot Guard Rider and Brother Marine, was there to escort me off of the bus on our return. I was blessed to be in the company of so many brave American's. I encourage you to show your support for your officers. Attend a meeting, fellowship with other Marines, sign a new member, make our detachment the best. Semper Fi and God Bless, Stanley Scott, Chaplain

Activities Committee Input for May: Another fine evening of camaraderie and good food was enjoyed at Hoxton Grill during the April Dining Out, it was good to see all that made it there. The following week at movie night we watched the western Forsaken. If you have a movie suggestion for future movie nights let me know and I will try to get it. We had our final trivia night of our regular season on April 23 rd and many, many thanks go out to all those League and Auxiliary members who continue to support the League by working at Trivia or by putting teams together and coming out to play in them. If the schedule permits we may have a couple Friday Night Trivia's during the summer. Tuesday May 24th Dining Out: It has been almost a year and it feels like it is time to head back to Veit s Pub and Grill, 2314 Lorenzo Greene Dr. for our May Dining Out. Think of those Marines you've spoken to before about joining the League and invite them along to the Dining Out. Head counts are needed by Sunday May 22nd; you can email your count to sfgactivities@gmail.com or call 659-5069 and leave a message. Saturday May 21 st Devil Dog Golf Tournament: Central MO Pound #77 Military Order of the Devil Dogs has invited all League/Auxiliary Members and their guests to join them on Armed Forces Day for the 8 th Annual Devil Dog Par 3 Fun Tournament. The tournament will be held at Turkey Creek Golf Center, 1616 Oilwell Rd, Jefferson City, MO. Please pre-register as soon as possible, by the May 3 rd League meeting would be really fantastic, as there are items which are being ordered from out of town for the tournament and food has to be ordered ahead of time too. Early pre-registration will help insure no one is left short on food or freebies! See the attached flyer for additional information. If you have any suggestions for future activities please see Alan Sanning at the meeting, email sfgactivities@gmail.com, or call 659-5069. Semper Fi!!! Auxiliary s Article: Happy May, Ladies! I wonder if anyone still does May Baskets? We have had a busy month, with VA Bingo, Ron Borgmeyer memorial, Trivia, Bingo, etc. I am so proud of our auxiliary members. Whenever you are called upon to help the Detachment, you go above and beyond. Good job!!! I have to give kudos to Jackie Hunter. She took responsibility for providing food for Ron s memorial, (approx. 75 attendees), then cooked for Trivia the very next day. Thanks to all who brought sides and desserts. Our next meeting will be May 3 rd, and there will be numerous events to discuss. Remember, recruit, recruit, recruit. New members are always welcomed! Marine Corps History: Selected May Dates of Marine Corps Historical Significance: 2 May 1946: Marines from Treasure Island Marine Barracks, under the command of Warrant Officer Charles L. Buckner, aided in suppressing the threeday prison riot at Alcatraz Penitentiary in San Francisco Bay. WO Buckner, a veteran of the Bougainville and Guam campaigns, ably led his force of Marines without suffering a single casualty. 5 May 1983: In Beirut, Lebanon, a UH-1N helicopter carrying the commander of the American peace-keeping force, Colonel James Mead, was hit by machine gun fire. The six Marines aboard escaped injury. Colonel Mead and his crew had taken off in the helicopter to investigate artillery and rocket duels between rival Syrian-backed Druze Moslem militiamen and Christian Phalangists that endangered French members of the multinational force. 8 May 1995: In the wake of the most devastating storm to hit the New Orleans area in more than 200 years, a group of Marines and sailors from Marine Forces Reserve demonstrated the quick response synonymous with the Navy/Marine Corps team. Within 24 hours of being called, Marines assisted in the evacuation of 2,500 civilians, and Navy corpsmen treated scores of flood victims. 10 May 1945: The 22d Marines, 6th Marine Division, executed a pre-dawn attack south across the Asa River Estuary and seized a bridgehead from which to continue the attack toward Naha, the capital of Okinawa. 15 May 1862: Corporal John Mackie, the first Marine to earn the Medal of Honor, was commended for service in the USS Galena during action against Confederate shore batteries at Drewry's Bluff which blocked the James River approaches to Richmond. 22 May 1912: First Lieutenant Alfred A. Cunningham, the first Marine officer to be assigned to "duty in connection with aviation" by Major General Commandant William P. Biddle, reported for aviation training at the Naval Aviation Camp at Annapolis, Maryland, and Marine aviation had its official beginning. 23 May 1988: The V-22 Osprey, the world's first production tilt-rotor aircraft, made its debut during rollout ceremonies at Bell Helicopter Textron's Arlington, Texas, facility. More than 1,000 representatives from the military, industry, and media, gathered to hear various speakers, including Gen Alfred Gray, Commandant of the Marine Corps, praise the versatile rotor craft designed to meet the needs of 21st Century battlefields. 26 May 1969: Operation Pipestone Canyon began when the 1st Battalion, 26th Marines and 3d Battalion, 5th Marines began sweeps in the Dodge City/Go Noi areas southwest of Da Nang. It terminated at the end of June with 610 enemy killed in action at a cost of 34 Marines killed. 29 May 1991: Elements of a joint task force that included the 5th Marine Expeditionary Brigade departed the Bay of Bengal off the coast of Bangladesh after nearly two weeks of disaster relief operations following a devastating cyclone. The joint task force delivered tons of relief supplies using helicopters, C-130s, and landing craft in Operation Sea Angel. Information from: https://www.mcu.usmc.mil/historydivision/pages/thi s%20month%20in%20history/may.aspx If you have an anecdote, milestone or something from your history in the Marine Corps or a recollection of a moment in USMC history which you were a part of which you would like to share please send it to Alan Sanning at sfgactivities@gmail.com for possible inclusion in this section. Thank You! 16 May 1945: The 22d and 29th Marines continued the attack against Half Moon Hill, a day characterized by the 6th Marine Division as the "bitterest" of the Okinawa campaign. By the 18th, the famed "Shuri line" had been broached.

We also brought in a new Pup, Jeremy Kee. Mongrel Kee was run through the paces by Mad Dog, Steve ATATAGAYB Baskette and impressed all with his Boneman's Creed and reporting acumen. Great job and welcome aboard Pup Kee! Barking of being run through the paces, our newest DD, Frank Livingston got the treatment at the Midwest Division Conference in Overland Park, KS along with two other advancing Pups. The three of them brought a good price at the Friday evening auction, I'm sure it was in no small part, due to the fetching attire Pup Livingston found to wear for his advancement training! Congratulations and job well done DD Livingston! May 21 st - Annual Armed Forces Day Devil Dog Par 3 Fun Golf Tournament: We'll be playing at Turkey Creek Golf Center again this year. We have already started signing up hole and prize sponsors for the tournament. We are asking for a minimum $30 donation, (always thrilled to accept more), from hole sponsors. We are also looking for prize sponsors as well. If you would like to help obtain hole or prize sponsors please contact one of the committee members, DD's Steve Brown, Matt Jorgenson or PDD Scott Mayhew or the Pound Keeper to obtain the information and forms for this purpose. If you don't plan on playing in the tournament please consider helping out with the set up and registration beginning about 0700 at the course and/or cooking for chow at the barracks following the tournament. Come on out and have some fun. For those planning to play please pre-register as soon as possible to help us out with the logistics for the day, by the May 3 rd League meeting would be a great help.
