L. Col. Mahew Brown Commander, 181 IW/DGS COMMANDER S COMMENTS I have recenly been rying o read more since I have finally reached a poin in my life where I can read for pleasure versus required reading for a class, course, or he dreaded PME reading! Wha I have discovered is I am a fan of Winson S. Churchill who was Prime Miniser of Grea Briain during World War II. Depending on wha you read he was eiher a grea saesman wih incredible wi or a canankerous cigar smoker who sruggled wih drinking a lile oo much. I believe he laer helped shape he former. Regardless, his houghs are well published, and for me, relevan o much of wha life (family, friends, careers, ec.) requires of us. As I approach ye anoher birhday, I am comfored in he belief ha I am coninuing o grow each day. No, unforunaely, I am no geing any aller bu raher growing in my undersanding of how o measure success and wha is imporan in life. I can finally concede life is no a sprin. As Mr. Churchill is credied for saying, Coninuous effor no srengh or inelligence is he key o unlocking our poenial. I hink for many of us guardsmen we can credi our careers o his philosophy. Those who are successful, however you choose o measure i, can probably aribue i o deerminaion, perseverance, and giving hemselves fully o he ask a hand. So wha is he secre? Wha is he formula for success? Success is sumbling from failure o failure wih no loss of enhusiasm. (Winson S. Churchill). I hink his one is perfec o describe mos of our effors. Wheher i is susained physical finess, quiing smoking, compleing a degree, or finally finishing ha PME, success requires passion. Posiive people surround hemselves wih posiive people who have posiive energy. Those ha succeed in life and a whaever hey se ou o accomplish do so because hey have a passion. They have such a belief in hemselves ha nobody and nohing ges in heir way. For hose who can say posiive and opimisic when i is hardes are he ones who come ou on he oher side winners. Aiude is a lile hing ha makes a big difference. (Yes, Winson again). Someimes when leading meeings remember; Courage is wha i akes o sand up and speak; courage is also wha i akes o si down and lisen. Or, jus as imporan, when you are aending meeings remember; If you have an imporan poin o make, don ry o be suble or clever. Use a pile driver. Hi he poin once. Then come back and hi i again. Then hi i a hird ime a remendous whack. (Winson S. Churchill) My mos favorie Churchill quoe; To each here comes in heir lifeime a special momen when hey are figuraively apped on he shoulder and offered he chance o do a very special hing, unique o hem and fied o heir alens. Wha a ragedy if ha momen finds hem unprepared or unqualified for ha which could have been heir fines hour. We are using his in our squadron o explain why we menor, why we aggressively pursue professional developmen opporuniies, why we care abou our readiness requiremens, and why we serve. So back o my opening commen, maybe here is always somehing I should be pursuing o beer myself. I beer ge sared on some PME readings! For me, oher noable quoes from Mr. Churchill include - You have enemies? Good. Tha means you've sood up for somehing, someime in your life. - We make a living by wha we ge, bu we make a life by wha we give. - Success is no final, failure is no faal: i is he courage o coninue ha couns. - Never, never, never give up. - My mos brillian achievemen was my abiliy o be able o persuade my wife o marry me. Wih hose quesions answered, and my own reiremen soon approaching, my las quesion o you is When is i ime o go? Remember, here may be opporuniies laer o join back up. We have members on base who have had a break in service and reurned o finish heir careers. Word o he wise do a good job while you re here, rea everyone wih respec, and don burn any bridges you never know, he saff sergean of oday could be he wing commander of omorrow. Some deermined few make i o he end. Wheher radiional, acive guard reserve (AGR), or echnician, he rewards of making i o reiremen canno be undervalued. Sacrifices are many over a 20 plus year career; deploymens, missed holidays, no being here for life evens (my daugher was born while I was in basic and graduaed high school while I was in Baghdad, I was able o be here for her wedding his year, bu my broher wasn, he s an acive duy Chief on deploymen, funny sory - he me some of our Civil Engineering guys over here, imagine heir surprise running ino anoher Chief Winegar halfway across he world, kudos o hem for aking care of his issue - Racer Pride a is fines.) Despie he sacrifices, when you reach he end mos will say i was worh i. So, when is i ime o go? For me, i s when I can answer Why am I here? and Wha do I do now? he way I should anymore. I has been my privilege and honor o be ONE of ha ONE PERCENT who served, as acive, radiional, echnician, and lasly AGR, for 27 years.
