Commander s Message Joseph Lampert Fellow Legionnaires, The National Convention in Houston was well attended, and a lot of good information was put out. We were able to get answers to specific questions concerning Agent Orange exposures that were brought up by Post members. I plan to attend the October Park District meeting to specifically address the Posts concerns regarding the Official who refuses to stand during the Pledge of Allegiance. The Oktoberfest party is on October 19 th. Jr. Vice Shawn and his wife are cooking authentic German fare. The price is $10.00 and reservations are needed. Contact Cheryl Cubine. Joe Lampert Post 134 Commander October, 2013 Auxiliary President Lynne Weaver Hello everyone from the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary. We had our first meeting of the new season on September 10 th, 2013. We had three new members in attendance, and our meeting consisted of approving our new budget for 2013-2014. Donna Hedrick, our Financial officer, presented us with the new budget that was set up at our August 14 th Budget Meeting. Approval by motion was to wait on CDs to come to maturity and then reinvest the money according to recommendations by Morgan Stanley. Donna talked about her trip to Houston, Texas with her husband Joe, to attend the Ladies Auxiliary National Convention as the District representative. A new project adopted by the Ladies Auxiliary is to save coupons for the Veterans. Sharon Martin will be in charge of collecting the coupons and sending them to the various Military Posts around the world. ANNUAL OKTOBERFEST October 19, 2013, 3:00 pm $10.00 a person We will serve an authentic German meal of Weisswurst, Spaetzle, SauerKraut/Red Kraut with cranberry sauce, pretzels, Kaiser pancakes and apple strudel. Oktoberfest beer will be available. You must RSVP with Cheryl (847) 663-0539 by October 15, 2013. Bonnie Sheirok, Donna Hedrick and Joe Hedrick played Bingo with the veterans last Thursday night at Jessie Brown. Ladies Auxiliary District Installation will be held at the Post on October 2nd; Susan Bailey will be the new District President. Happy fall to everyone, and if any of the wives of veterans would like to join the Ladies Auxiliary, we are always interested in new members.

Convention went well, but it was very hot and humid. At the convention we learned more about the Agent Orange, Boots on the Ground. We learned that it also covers all sailors in ground water within 5 miles. Also includes people transporting Agent Orange. The bill is going to the Senate soon to be voted on. We collected $1,083 for the Commander s Raffle which was drawn at our Post 134 Annual Picnic in July. It was a 50/50 drawing and there were 3 winners. Louis Skydall who won $108.30 and donated his winnings to a OCW (Operation Comfort Warriors), Jerry Weaver who won $162.45 and Kurt Lepinski who won $270.75. Thanks to all who participated. Americanism, Jac Charlier Received a thank you from the Eagle Scouts for attending their Court of Honor. A local Girl Scout troop is interested in doing something for the Navy Recruits for Thanksgiving. I m still looking for volunteers to help out with Americanism. If anyone has free time to pick up our retired American Flags and drop them at Haben Funeral Home in Skokie, please contact me. It should only take about 20 minutes to accomplish this. Auxiliary, Lynne Weaver We are collecting coupons for the veterans. The 7 th District Installation will be held on Oct. 2, 2013. Community Service, PC Joe Piento No report. Corporation President, PC Ken Trumbull The light fixtures are going to be changed in the upstairs hallway. We have another contractor bid to finish the Club Room upstairs. Gun Club, PC Bill Smith We met with the Village Range Consultant, and we are moving ahead slowly. Park District, PC Jerry Weaver No report. SAL, Joseph Lampert The SAL and the Corporation are discussing going halves on the cost of a new 80 TV for the Club Room. The SAL will be cooking the breakfast for the USO on Saturday, September 28, 2013. Service Officer, PC Don Stotz William Jensen and Robert Barsky passed away this month. Robert Barsky s family donated the money back to Operation Comfort Warriors. Don Waser, PC Tim Milios and Leonard Altobelli are in the hospital. Thanksgiving Day Committee, Casey Bachara We will post the info on the Thanksgiving Day for the Recruits in the next 2 newsletters. We will pass the hat next meeting for their football game. VA&R, PC Ken Trumbull We gave a $900 donation to the Gift to the Yank and Commander Lampert added $100 out of his pocket for a total of $1,000. Village Liaison, PC Joe Hedrick The Post has a Legion table at the Farmer s Market this year, and it was for donations to Gifts to the Yanks and we passed out flyers and membership information. The Farmer s Market has less people this year than last. IDOT is voting on closing Dempster Street for our Veteran s Day Parade. We had a meeting with the Village and the Gun Club. Things still need to be worked out. New Business Hank asked about our Morton Grove softball team which is for hardball. PC Joe Hedrick said we took 1 st place locally and 2 nd place regionally last year. There was not enough interest this year, so we did not have a softball team. Pot of Gold The Pot of Gold total this month was $139.00, and the consolation prize of $19.00 dollars was won by Bruce Tarpay. Free Flu Shots for Veterans Fall and winter usually means flu season. Starting August 26, 2013 flu shots will be given at Hines VA Hospital. You can receive a flu shot at any place where you have an appointment or any of the Walk-In Clinics. No appointment needed.
