Region V-AE, which consists of professional members in Arkansas, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota, and Texas, will host the 2007 SPRC in the city of Houston. The SPRC is targeted towards technical professionals, engineers, and technologists in the organization. While this conference is a Region V-AE event, it is open to NSBE Alumni members from all six NSBE Regions within the organization. The SPRC focus is on science and technology, leadership, emerging technologies, and innovations in industry. As an organization, our vision is to structure a professional event that is designed for the membership to embrace these areas for the purpose of enhancing their exposure, knowledge, and interest. Highlights of the conference include the Technology Exposition where top companies get the opportunity to show off their latest innovations, research, and product developments to the NSBE membership. Other conferences highlights include NSBE AE Special Interest Group (SIG) meetings and industry focused workshops. Current Special Interest Groups are: Aerospace, Automotive, Biomedical, Energy, Environmental Engineering, Human Factors, Information Technology, Petroleum, Space, Structural Engineering, Transportation, and Women in Science and Engineering. Finally, the SPRC will include two technology focused community outreach program: Project AE, where NSBE members will visit local high schools and expose students to careers in science and engineering, and the first annual Martin Luther King Community Empowerment Seminar, an event targeted towards the Houston Black community at large. NSBE HISTORY The National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) organization began in April of 1975 at Purdue University. The organization was later incorporated in 1976 in Austin, TX as a non-profit organization. The organization was started by just six college students from Purdue University. Since then, NSBE has since grown to more than 15,000 members divided into six regions nationwide. The Alumni Extension of the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE-AE) was established in 1988. The Alumni Extension consists of working professionals in industry, government, and academia across the region. In addition to the invaluable opportunities NSBE provides its student members, NSBE also provides a forum for technical professionals to develop as professionals and continue the mission of the organization. The mission of NSBE is the same today as it was then To increase the number of culturally responsible Black engineers who excel academically, succeed professionally, and positively impact the community. Strategic Planning & Research Conference Events SPRC Kickoff Mixer Thursday, January 11 8:00 pm Until Conference attendees will be welcomed to the city of Houston with a social networking event to be held in a downtown venue near the conference hotel. Over the past decade, more than $4 billion has been spent to transform the downtown Houston area into a vital public center with a popular nightlife scene. Project AE Community Service Friday, January 12 8:00 am 12:00 pm In an effort to positively impact our community, NSBE Alumni members will visit high schools in the Houston community to introduce technology to high school students. The program will involve instructing students how to assemble and disassemble computers. This program will allow the students to have a hands-on experience of what the internal parts are and how to connect those parts to make the system work. The hands-on approach is the best method because it builds their confidence in understanding how a computer functions. Attendees will be divided into groups based on their interests.
