Hana hou, as we meet once more in Waikiki at the site of last year's very successful convention. Our theme this year, "Onipa'a i ka mana'o - Hold fast to those goals in which you believe", reflects our dedication to the basic foundations of our organization. Again and again, we have demonstrated our ability to come together as clubs, councils and an association, to discuss and debate matters of mutual concern. Our members have consistently identified and researched issues even before they are noticed by the larger community, and our resolutions attest to our early involvement. Beautiful Hawaiian crafts and art objects that are taken for granted today were almost forgotten yesterday, and civic club members were leaders in the re-discovery that took place. On behalf of the officers and members of the Board of, may I thank you for your support and kokua during the year just past. And personally, my everlasting mahalo for your cooperation and willingness to share a commitment to make this Association strong and successful. EXECUTIVE CHAMBERS HONOLULU JOHN WAIHEE GOVERNOR MESSAGE FROM GOVERNOR JOHN WAIHEE November 14-17, 1990 It is a pleasure to extend my greetings and warm aloha to those attending the 1990 convention of Hawaiian Civic Clubs. The Hawaiian Civic Clubs have stimulated Hawaiian leadership and provided assistance to the Hawaiian people, just as Prince Jonah Kuhio Kalaniana'ole intended when he began the first club in 1918. The number of clubs has grown to 44 in Hawaii and on the mainland and enjoy a membership of over 2,350. Today, the Hawaiian Civic Clubs continue the original mission by providing scholarships for young Hawaiian men and women, increasing public awareness of Hawaiian issues, and representing the interests of the Hawaiian people. This convention promises a chance for more than 2,000 members and delegates to share their thoughts as they bear in mind the conference theme, "Onipa'a I Ka Mana'o." We appreciate the responses and would therefore like to introduce these nominees to you. They are FOR THE OFFICE OF PRESIDENT: Jalna Keala (Ali'i Pauahi Hawaiian Civic Club) Jalna is seeking re-election to the office of. She is a charter member of the Ali'i Pauahi Hawaiian Civic Club, O'ahu Council (AOHCC). She served as a member of HACPAC's Survey Committee; HACPAC and Chair; Chair of one of the AOHCC standing committees under former AOHCC Whitney Anderson; member of the AOHCC Board of from the O'ahu Council; Second Vice of the AOHCC; First Vice of the AOHCC; and was elected AOHCC in 1988. During the past two years and through her direction, the Association held a constitutional convention, installed a new Council and chartered three new Clubs; adopted a 5-Year Convention Plan; and developed convention guidelines for future conventions. Jalna participates in civic projects including Hui Imi (an inventory of Hawaiian services), Hui Ho'ala (a voter education/registration program for Hawaiians); and "Operation 'Ohana " (a registration of all Hawaiians for the OHA genealogy bank). She worked on Hawaiian homestead issues with DHHL; and testified at the Hawai'i State Legislature on resolutions passed at AOHCC conventions. Jalna is currently employed as Government Affairs Officer at OHA. Dexter K. Soares (Kalihi-Palama Hawaiian Civic Club) Dexter is running for the office of. He is a member of the Kalihi Palama Hawaiian Civic Club. Dexter is the Director of the Post-High Scholarship and Counseling Services ~rogram (Na Ho'okama a Pauahi) at The Kamehameha Schools and has held this position for the past ten years. The program provides scholarship funds and counselling support services to Hawaiian students pursuing higher education and graduate/professional studies to complete degree programs. He is also involved in implementing the Dr. George H. Mills Fellowship in Medicine. Dexter is active in many community organizations and has been instrumental in reinforcing empowerment and assisting community groups and neighborhood coalitions in securing educational as well as mental health funds by impacting and supporting legislation affecting the Hawaiian community via testimony, etc. He is active in the Honolulu Theatre for Youth, community youth programs, Hawaiian Civic Club programs, the Hawaiian Culture Lecture Series at Kaumakapili Church and has opened his home to the DOE Kupuna Program by conducting weekend Hawaiian craft workshops with his family. Dexter currently serves as of the O'ahu Council (AOHCC) and was Past Chair of the AOHCC Education Committee. Community involvement includes advisory and director roles in the Inter Pacific Fellowship Foundation, ALI/IBM Board. HACPAC, Hale Ola '0 Ho'opakolea (Native Hawaiian traditional healing practices) as well as being a small business owner and craftsman. Current enrollment: masters/doctorate program, University of Hawai'i College of Education. 5

FOR THE OFFICE OF FIRST VICE PRESIDENT: H.K. Bruss Keppeler (Hawaiian Civic Club of Honolulu/ Prince Kuhio Hawaiian Civic Club) Bruss is a dual member of the Hawaiian Civic Club of Honolulu and the Prince Kuhio Hawaiian Civic Club, O'ahu Council (AOHCC). He currently serves as First Vice of the Association of Hawaiian Civic Clubs and wishes to seek re-election to this office. "Ke keiki 0 ka 'aina", Bruss was born of Herbert Kealoha and Doris Kahikilani (Mossman) Keppeler. He is a member of the Hawai'i Bar Association and entered general law practice on June 1, 1976, where his ~mphasis is currently business and real property as well as estate planning and probate. Some of his many community achievements and participation include: Lahaina Restoration Foundation, HuiHanai, Hawaiian Music Foundation, Polynesian Voyaging Society, Na Poki'i-Hawaiian Scholars Program, AOHCC Director, a past and First Vice of the O'ahu Council (AOHCC), Aloha Week Hawai'i, Inc., Director and, Director of the Friends of 'Iolani Palace, Trustee of Historic Hawai'i Foundation, member of the OHA Land and Natural Resources Committee, member of the Committee for the Preservation and Study of Hawaiian Language, Art and Culture, Director of the Waiaha Foundation and Director of Hale Ola '0 Ho'opakolea. FOR THE OFFICE OF SECOND VICE PRESIDENT: Reynolds Nakooka Kamakawiwo'ole, Jr. (Hawaiian Civic Club 'of Hamakua) Reynolds is seeking election to the office of Second Vice. His track record includes serving as of the Hawaiian Civic Club of Hamakua on the Big Island of Hawai'i during 1985-1990, Director of the Hawai'i Council (AOHCC) on the Board of the Association of Hawaiian Civic Clubs, 1986-1990, Director of the ALU LIKE, Inc., Council for twenty years, Past of the Hamakua Jaycees, Past Criminal Justice Program Manager, State of Hawai'i, and is currently a member of the U.S. Jaycees. Reynolds was nominated and selected as the Outstanding Hawaiian for 1989 by the Association of Hawaiian Civic Clubs at its 30th Annual Convention held here at the Pacific Beach Hotel, Waikiki, O'ahu. FOR THE OFFICE OF TREASURER: EthelredaKahalewai (Pu'uloa Hawaiian Civic Club) For fifteen years, Ethelreda worked as an Island Manager for a mainland-based custodial company serving all military bases on O'ahu supervising 450 employees. During the next ten years she served as Administrative Services Supervisor, State of Hawai'i Office of Environmental Quality Control. She retired from that position to run her own business and is currently Owner/Operator of The Royal Feather Company (past five years). She is presently for the O'ahu Council (AOHCC) and 6 served as Past Corresponding for the Council. She is now of the Pu'uloa Hawaiian Civic Club and served as Past for the Club. She has also served as a Pa~t and Director for HACPAC since its inception thru 1985 and has served as a committee member on the AOHCC Budget & Finance Committee for three terms (respective chairs Elaine Mullaney, Charles Rose and Kala Holden). Holden Antoinette Lee Melissa Guerreiro Nola Nahulu The Pearl Harbor Hawaiian Civic Club extends its warmest aloha to all Association of Hawaiian Civic Clubs' members. Pearl Harbor is proud to announce that at this year's convention our hui will be represented by a delegation for 305+ members. At the beginning of the year we were able to revise, enhance and clarify our Club ByLaws with the use of Hawaiian language, aligning our fiscal year with that of the O'ahu Council and the Association, and raising our dues. Our monthly meetings have been well attended and the fellowship was kept enthused by Club officers and directors as they informed us on key Native Hawaiian issues. We have regular monthly meetings which were formatted this year with lessons of the Hawaiian language taught through games, mele and storytelling. Other meetings/classes were weekly hula, weaving classes of coconut and lauhala, kukui/ coconut seed craft classes and choral practices. The Na 'Opio have a membership of nineteen as of this writing. They attend regular monthly meetings and quarterly meetings of their own. (Continued next column ) They not only participated in Hawaiian language and the craft classes and meetings, but went on excursions, boat trips and took part in many Club fundraisers. Our hui worked hard this year at continuous fundraisers for regular Club needs and for the main goal of the Club, which is our scholarship program. This year's fundraisers are not finished as yet and will be going on well into December. Pearl Harbor members accomplished much by participating in the following: Family A'Fair (Shave Ice/Beef Stew) - 50th State Fair (Pizza and Saimin Booths) - Family Sunday, Bishop Museum (Stew &Rice,'Corn & Ice Tea) Children's Aloha Week (Hot Dogs, Corn & Ice Tea) Kamehameha Day Parade (Soda distribution) - Na Mea Craft Projects (visiting conventions). These fundraisers enabled the Club to purchase an all-purpose tent for projects and functions and provided the funds necessary to award 20 scholarships and four Kamehameha School Explorations. Our Club supported the Association of Hawaiian Civic Clubs and the O'ahu Council by attending their meetings and by supporting the bowling league with eighteen teams. We have also supported other Clubs and organizations such as Nanaikapono HCC Scholarship Luau and Prince Kuhio Scholarship Concert, Mauna 'Ala Ali'i commemorations, Ali'i Sunday services, usheri~g for Kamehameha School Song Contest, Cancer Society Jailathon/Aloha Fun Run/Kolekole Pass Marathon and Kalihi-Palama Cultural & Arts Society Quilt Day registration. A new kokua and support group our hui has undertaken is the Hemophilia Association of Hawai'i. We sponsored the son of a Club member in the run-walk for hemophilia. Recruitment was one of the major achievements of diligent and persevering members who set long range goals and made them a reality. Pearl Harbor members have showed the true spirit of- this year's convention theme of "'Onipa'a I Ka Mana'o" by attending and participating in the multitude of events and fundraisers, and all community service projects that wets scheduled for the Club's 1990 calendar. Once again they have shown their dedication and love which is why the Pearl Harbor Hawaiian Civic Club is the '''Onipa'a" Club. 7

Civu C{u6 IMember 1990 The Outstanding Hawaiian Civic Club Member for 1990 is 'Ahahui '0 Lili'uokalani Hawaiian Civic Club Member ANDREW HONORE' (ANALU) BERARD. Andrew has been a Civic Club member for five years. Andy is the son of George H. and Clara Leihulu Berard. He is married to Brucella Halani Hopkins and lives in Cerritos, California. They have three children: Andy Jr., Bruce and Lisa,as well as six grandchildren. His love and tremendous strength is valued by his family, to whom he is dedicated and committed. Analu graduated from The Kamehameha Schools in 1956 and the California State University of Los Angeles in 1971 with a B.S. in electrical engineering. He has been with Hughes Aircraft for the past twenty-four years and has demonstrated outstanding leadership and managerial abilities throughout this career in engineering, program management and the business community. Highlights of his participation include 'board member of the Mainland Council and director to AOHCC; principle author in writing a grant proposal to the Administration for Native Americans (ANA) requesting assistance in activities with a special emphasis on career planning for higher education and career development. He has chaired 'Ahahui '0 Lili'uokalani's fundraising event for the last three years as well as been the Club's representative to the Hawaiian Inter-Club Council (HICC) of Southern California. 9

Outstandinq 9{pn-J awaiian 1990 The Outstanding Non-Hawaiian for 1990 is DR. TERRY SHINTANI, Director of Preventative Medicine at the Wai'anae Coast Comprehensive Health Center where a majority of the Center's 18,000 clients are Native Hawaiians. Dr. Shintani strongly advocates the Wai'anae Coast's diet program. His involvement in this program for more than the past twelve months has afforded him the opportunity to participate in numerous community activities such as giving informative speeches about kalo, attending the National Institute of Health (NIH) in Washington, D.C. along with Claire Hughes, Dr. Emmett Aluli and Dr. Brian Martin, all of whom presented papers on Native Hawaiian health. He organized a volunteer group to provide cholesterol testing during the 1989 AOHCC convention in addition to having his clinical equipment available. Dr. Shintani has continously advocated for health concerns of the Hawaiian people. His efforts have resulted in the education of the Hawaiian public as well as the non Hawaiian public. This education process has included in its criteria making the public aware and understanding the problems of Hawaiian health risks. His work has contributed in making the Wai'anae Comprehensive Health Center nationally recognized for its role in providing health care and health education to Hawaiians. He is an Associate Member of E Ola Mau and sits on the Clinical Faculty at the School of Public Health and School of Medicine at the University of Hawai'i. Terry is the son of Robert and Emiko Shintani. Princess Ka'iulani was well represented at convention and although small in membership, we helped in the steno pool with typing, xeroxing, compiling and distributing materials for an efficient convention. We took a concession and sold our Christmas crafts, which is our annual fundraiser. Chairman of the Outstanding Awards Committee, Rona Rodenhurst, programmed an excellent presentation of the Outstanding Hawaiian, Non-Hawaiian, Civic Club Member and the Outstanding Club at the convention banquet., We continued our theme of learning--mai ka ohana--throughout the year. In February 1990 we celebrated our 12th Anniversary and installed our 1990 officers. In June members of our Club helped the staff of OHA in their Annual Na 'Opio Legislature. Under the guidance of Rusty Rodenhurst and Kauila Clark, Coordinators, these Hawaiian youth spent a whole week in mock session in the Senate and House Chambers of our State Legislature. Our members also actively participated in the 'Aha Kupuna Conference assisting with the coordination of the activities. Just completed on October 16 the celebration of the 115th birthday of Princess Ka'iulani at Mauna 'Ala, an annual event of the 'Ahahui. Scholarships were awarded to graduates of Hawaiian ancestry- in the amount of $3000. A $50 savings bond was also awarded to the Good Citizenship Awardee. Club activities included fundraisers: the North Shore Carnival and a kalua pig sale. Funds were earmarked for the Scholarship Fund and to defray convention expenses. Members participated in the 1990 Ho'ike'ike at the Bishop Museum, chairing the Cofflmercial Vendors Committee. Representative Joseph Leong was the recipient of HACPAC's Lei Hulu Mamo Outstanding Hawaiian Politician Award for 1990. A donation was made to the Jerry lewis Muscular Dystrophy Telethon., Annually, Waialua hosts a White Christmas Party for the 'opio of Waialua with games and caroling. Members donate food items and distribute goody bags and White Christmas boxes of staples and other food items to needy families. 19
