T.L. Hanna High School Return to the Guidance Office by Tuesday, April 2, 2019. This scholarship will be awarded to a graduating male or female of the senior class from T.L. Hanna High School whose past performance and potential for future development best exemplifies the personal and professional qualities of Stephen D. Thorne and, in addition, meets the following criteria: 1. Applicants must have attended T.L. Hanna for two years. 2. Applicants must have either a cumulative GPA of 3.8 or higher (UGS) or a combined SAT score of 1200 or higher (critical reading and math sections) or a 27 composite ACT. Applicants should include their high school transcript and their test scores sheet. The transcript may be obtained through your online Parchment account and Mrs. Motes in the guidance office may provide your test score sheet. Please see Mrs. Motes if you have questions regarding Parchment. 3. Applicants must be involved in one or more extracurricular activities. Include your resume with your application. 4. Applicants must be seeking a degree in Engineering, math, or other technical fields, or must be interested in pursing a Naval Career. 5. Applicants must have two letters of recommendation. One should be from a teacher. 6. Applicant must hand-write an essay (1000) words or less, stating your college and career goals. This scholarship is open to all qualified applicants without regard to race, color, religion, sex, or financial need. The scholarship will be forwarded to the recipient s college or university to help fund the first year of studies. *Applications for the Stephen D. Thorne Memorial Scholarship will be scanned electronically and e-mailed to the selection committee. Please do not staple your application materials together. was established in July, 1986 in memory of LCDR Stephen Douglas Thorne, USN, and Astronaut. Stephen D. Thorne was an honor graduate of T.L. Hanna High School in 1971. He was a member of the National Honor Society, the Commander of the NJROTC Unit, an Eagle Scout, a member of the football and track teams and an active member in his church, Boulevard Baptist. During his senior year, Steve received an appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland and in June of 1971 he entered the Academy with the class of 1975. At the Naval Academy, Steve excelled in both his military and academic training. He was a member of the Protestant Choir and he actively participated in several sports of which rugby was his favorite. As a result of his proven leadership abilities, he was assigned to command the Fourth Battalion consisting of eight hundred midshipmen during his senior year. He earned a degree in Systems Engineering. On June 4, 1975, Steve graduated in the top ten percent of his class and received a commission as an Ensign in the United States Navy. He entered flight training in August, 1975 in Pensacola, Florida and was awarded his wings in December, 1976. After training in the F-4 Phantom, je joined Fighter Squadron 21 home ported in Miramar, California and was deployed to the Western Pacific aboard the USS RANGER (CV-61). In 1981 he was accepted for training as a test pilot at the U.S. Naval Test Pilot School, Patuxent River, Maryland. Following his qualification as a test pilot, he spent the next two years at the Naval Air Test Center performing ordnance and weapons systems testing in the F-4 Phantom and the A-7 Corsair II. After this tour in October, 1984, he was selected to transition to the new F/A-18 Hornet and joined one of the Navy s first F/A-18 squadrons, Strike Fighter Squadron 132, home ported in Jacksonville, Florida. In June of 1985, he was selected as an Astronaut by NASA and began a one-year training program in Houston, Texas. On Memorial Day weekend in 1986, Steve was killed in an aircraft accident. All applicants are encouraged to visit the library at T.L. Hanna to reflect on the Stephen D. Thorne Memorial display. You will also find a plaque that honors the Memorial Scholarship recipients.
