My Father did not have a middle name. Many people may not know but he was a native born Canadian (born in Rolling Hills Saskatchewan not far from the border with the U.S.) and born to Ukrainian immigrants. Maybe they just did not use middle names. His older sister had moved to Chinook Montana and married a farmer/rancher. There was not a high school near Rolling Hills so he also moved to Chinook during high school and worked at a boarding house for his room and board and $0.50 per week (hard to imagine). He took 8 years to go through high school because the deal he made with his Father was to go back to the farm every other year and work on the farm with his brothers. After graduation he had several small jobs, and finally was hired by the U and I Sugar company and was eventually transferred to the Belle Fourche factory where he became the agricultural superintendent with responsibility to encourage farmers to grow sugar beets and teach them good farming practices. As part of his responsibility for supporting the farmers was to recruit labor to work in the fields (weeding and thinning) so he spent several weeks each year in San Antonio Texas recruiting Mexican labor to work in the fields. As such he taught himself to be fluent in Spanish. When the factory in Belle closed he transferred to Moses Lake Washington and retired with the company in that location. My Father was married in Chinook before his transfer to Belle to Audrey Wise and they had 3 children (Richard, Don (deceased) and Deanna). Richard and Don went all 12 grades in Belle and Deanna went through 10 th grade before the factory closed. In addition to being the Mayor both my Father and Mother were very active in St. James Lutheran church (where I was married). Both of my parents were principled people with a strong work ethic and I would like to think that also showed in their children. One thing I always remember was my Father s commitment to education (8 years to go through high school!) and how it was his mission to see to it that his children received more education than he had. All 3 of his children graduated from college with 4 year degrees. From Richard and Deanna.
