Statements & Search Criteria Statements Mission Statement The Kentucky Conservation Foundation supports powerful and innovative programs in Kentucky supporting clean air, clean water, and a healthy environment. As the charitable 501(c)3 sponsor of the Kentucky Conservation Committee, We work to enhance and protect the Commonwealth s rich biodiversity, educate the public on land conservation issues, promote sustainable use of energy, and alert the public to health issues involving extreme energy extraction. We believe in empowering communities for a just transition to a sustainable future. Background Statement The Kentucky Conservation Foundation is the 501(c)3 charitable fiscal sponsor of the Kentucky Conservation Committee, a statewide organization focused on land conservation, biodiversity protection and clean and sustainable energy solutions in Kentucky for over 40 years. We were founded in 1975 to connect the public to issues relating to the proposed damming of the Red River Gorge, and have continued to be a principal voice for the conservation concerns of the Commonwealth. Impact Statement Land Conservation:This year, we provided the educational outreach to build public support to restore $5 million in funding for critical land conservation work in Kentucky. Extreme Energy Extraction:We have engaged citizens throughout Kentucky on community impacts from extreme extraction, including natural gas fracturing and mountaintop removal mining. Clean Energy and Efficiency:During this past year we have engaged stakeholders to expand opportunities for more solar and clean energy in Kentucky, highlighted opportunities for energy efficiency, and worked to build support for Green Schools programs, where $68 million has already been saved in avoided energy costs. Biodiversity:Working with children and adults, we have given presentations throughout the state to educate the public on the rich biodiversity of Kentucky, which contains more than 19,000 native animal and plant species, including over 100 who reside only in Kentucky. We are also working on support for pollinator programs to protect bees, which are essential for maintaining farm crops and wild diverse plant populations. Needs Statement In order to execute our core projects, (Sustainable Communities, Biodiversity Education, Land Conservation, Clean Energy and Protecting Communities from Extreme Energy Extraction) we must raise $80,000-$100,000 each year. We also are building our capacity to more easily reach citizens in all counties in the state, which will benefit from an additional $10-20k in capacity-building funds. CEO Comments We have a great opportunity in building momentum for our land conservation work, due to our victory this year in building public support for restoring $5 million in state land conservation funds. We also have great opportunity to expand our clean energy work and extreme extraction work as well, as greater options become available for energy alternatives.one of our greatest challenges is in building up our core capacity for more resiliency. Three years ago we had to limit our project work and outreach due to extended illness of our core staff. We are now once again fully staffed and building great successes, but require a solid financial base to continue this momentum. 6
