It is back to school for the students and for the school nurses! One of the FAQ (frequently asked questions) in my district is, When do we call 9-1-1? In looking at resources that are available to school nurses, I was able to locate 9-1-1 guidelines. The guidelines are recommended procedures for when advanced medically trained personnel are not available on the school site. Emergency First Aid Guidelines for California Schools Emergency Medical Services Authority California Health and Human Services Agency, revised in 2013 is a 75-page document. The Emergency First Aid Guidelines for California Schools manual is meant to provide recommended procedures for school staff in responding to medical emergencies when the school nurse is not available and until emergency medical services responders arrive on scene. These guidelines provide recommended actions and do not supersede or invalidate any laws or rules established by a school system, a school board, or the State. The guidelines can be found at; http://www.emsa.ca.gov/media/default/pdf/emsa_196-schoolguidelines_final.pdf. What is your district s FAQ? Some examples are included on pages 2-4 of the newsletter. Upcoming on October 7 th is our LACSNA Fall Conference, Diabetes Updates with CHLA Certified Diabetic Educators Christine Hertler CDE and Barbara K. Hollen CDE. The conference will take place in Alhambra; this is a change of venue for us, so please note the location change. Thank you to Alhambra USD and Michelle Green for the meeting room! Take time out to enjoy your school nurse community and earn CEU s. This is a unique opportunity to engage with our CHLA CDE s! Plan ahead, put the LACSNA January 20 th conference on your calendar, it will take place from 4:30-8 PM. There is new legislation regarding immunization legislation related to SB 277, information regarding immunizations and waivers can be found at www.shotsforschool.org. Information related to the change in the law is also included in this newsletter; keep an eye on the ShotsForSchool website for further updates and implementation. As the health care professional at school, training is a large facet of our practice. We train staff daily formally and informally, with our actions and dialogs. What is difficult is the time management necessary and the resources to support trainings, that is why knowledge is so valuable. The better informed and knowledgeable you are on a subject, the higher the quality of the training you can provide. Research and continuing education is the professional responsibility of each and every school nurse and registered nurse. There are educational opportunities available, take advantages of them! Engage with your profession, your peers and your school nurse friends! I am looking forward to seeing my school nurse friends on October 7 th! With warm wishes, Lisa SAVE THE DATEs! A New Master s Degree Program is Being Launched in SoCal! A Letter from the Program s Coordinator, Debbie Martinez, PhD, PNP, RN (A former School Nurse from the San Gabriel Valley!) The University of San Francisco School of Nursing and Health Professions is excited to launch a Master s Degree Clinical Nurse Leader Program Spring 2016 at St. Joseph Center in Orange County. We have partnered with The Sisters of St. Joseph of Orange County and St. Joseph s Hospital to increase the number of clinical nurse leaders that will advance patient safety and improve quality of care, expand clinical opportunities in ambulatory care settings and work with the Sisters of St. Joseph of Orange to expand the efforts of their Healthcare Foundation. The focus will be recruiting members of underserved minorities. We are seeking community health and pediatric clinical sites and are very much interested in including school nursing. These rotations are beginning Summer 2016. Being a School Nurse for 14 years in Southern California I deeply respect the specialty that it is. I am more than happy to discuss this further and look forward to your interest. With Kindness, Debbie Debbie C. Many Thanks to Hilde Garrison Hilde Garrison has been a part of school nursing and LACSNA for many years. She retired from school nursing after many years of service in El Monte City School District in 2013. She also had been an integral part of the LACSNA as a member and a Board Officer for many years as Secretary, President and Past President. She resigned from her LACSNA board position this past spring. She is well, but is busy in her new life as a retiree. We miss her constant presence at our meetings. She was a great asset to school nursing and a wonderful friend. All of us on the LACSNA Board (and the larger membership) wish her the best retirement has to offer and hope she will stay in touch! She will be in our hearts as we continue with the LACSNA mission to support students and school nursing services! The very best wishes to you, Hilde! From all the LACSNA Board members: Lisa, Lynda, Kym, Michelle, Sherrie, Susan, Sheri, Nadine and Nancie LACSNA NEEDS YOU! LACSNA needs your wonderful skills as a school nurse leader and nurse colleague (and just want to have some good fun with other fellow school nurses). Board members are needed: Secretary, Members- at- Large, and Legislative Chair are open positions. The board meets every 2 months (Sept May) and plans two small conferences (evenings currently Oct. and January. More BRILLIANT minds are needed to join up! If you are not sure, come to one of the upcoming board meetings and sit or start as a Member at- Large. You will be surprised how rewarding it is!
