Agenda Item #3.25 REPORT TO THE BOARD OF GOVERNORS SUBJECT ENDOWMENTS MEETING DATE April 14, 2014 Forwarded to the Board of Governors on the Recommendation of the President APPROVED FOR SUBMISSION Presented By Hubert Lai, Q.C., University Counsel Report Date March 13, 2014 DECISION REQUESTED For Information EXECUTIVE SUMMARY The endowment funds listed under this docket have been approved by the President on the recommendation of the University Counsel in accordance with UBC Policy #113 and are presented to the Board of Governors FOR INFORMATION ONLY. Under UBC Policy #113 (Endowment Management Policy), the Board of Governors has delegated authority to the President to approve, upon the recommendation of the University Counsel, the establishment of new endowment funds. Spending may begin upon execution of the endowment documentation by the President.

Place and Promise COMMITMENT(s) Place and Promise ACTION(s) Description & Rationale N/A N/A Since the last docket report was prepared for the Board of Governors, the University Counsel has recommended and the President has approved the establishment of the following Endowment Funds: UBC Vancouver Faculty of Medicine 1. DR JEAN TEMPLETON HUGILL Endowment for Anaesthesia Memorial Fund: A bequest in the amount of $1,280,000 has been received from the Estate of Jean Templeton Hugill to establish an endowment fund to be known as the Dr Jean Templeton Hugill Endowment for Anaesthesia Memorial Fund (the Hugill Fund ). The Hugill Fund is to be used for multiple purposes, in accordance with the Will. In anticipation that the Hugill Fund will be used, in part, to support awards, the following awards have been submitted to and approved by Senate: a) HUGILL Graduate Scholarship in Anesthesia: Scholarships for graduate students in the Department of Anesthesiology, Pharmacology and Therapeutics who are conducting research in anesthesiology. Scholarships are made on the recommendation of the Department of Anesthesiology, Pharmacology and Therapeutics, in consultation with the Faculty of Medicine and the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies. (First award available in 2013/2014 academic year); and b) HUGILL Research Award in Anesthesia: Awards for undergraduate and MD students undertaking research under the direction of the Dr. Jean Templeton Hugill Chair in Anesthesia. Awards are made on the recommendation of the Department of Anesthesiology, Pharmacology and Therapeutics, in consultation with the Faculty of Medicine. (First award available in 2013/2014 academic year). UBC Vancouver Sauder School of Business 1. COMMERCE UNDERGRADUATE SOCIETY Endowment Fund: A gift in the amount of $300,000 from the Commerce Undergraduate Society, a club of the Alma Mater Society, will establish an endowment fund to be known as the Commerce Undergraduate Society Endowment Fund (the CUS Fund ). The CUS Fund will support projects, programs and activities for the benefit of commerce undergraduate students. The AMS Board has approved the establishment of this endowment. Decisions on the use of the funds will be made by the Sauder School of Business Director of the Undergraduate Program, or successor position, upon the recommendation of a CUS Fund committee of the CUS. UBC Okanagan Scholarships, Awards and Prizes NEW AWARDS SERVICE, LEADERSHIP AND ACTIVITIES 1. FINCH Family Undergraduate Award: A gift of $200,000 has been donated by Ken and Jean Finch to establish an endowment fund to be known as the Finch Family Undergraduate Awards Endowment Fund (the Finch Undergraduate Fund ). The Finch Undergraduate Fund will support awards totalling $7,000 (payable at $3,500 per year) for third-year students at the University of British Columbia, Okanagan campus. Candidates for the award must demonstrate high academic performance, enhanced by extra-curricular activities such as community service, research projects or summer employment. Candidates must be nominated by their Faculty or School. Subject to maintaining continued scholarship standing, award recipients will have their award renewed for their fourth year of study. (First awards available in the 2014 winter academic session) 2. FINCH Family Graduate Award: A gift of $400,000 has been donated by Ken and Jean Finch to establish an endowment fund to be known as the Finch Family Graduate Awards Endowment Fund (the Finch Graduate Fund ). The Finch Graduate Fund will support a $14,000 award for a student enrolled in a graduate degree program at the University of British Columbia, Okanagan campus. Preference is given to a student who demonstrates a focus in business related activities, and whose studies may lead to entrepreneurship, innovation, community leadership or local economic development. The award is made on the recommendation from the respective Faculties and Schools in consultation with the College of Graduate Studies. (First award available in the 2014 winter academic session) UBC Vancouver Scholarships, Awards and Prizes Scholarships: 1. J. ARMAND BOMBARDIER Sustainable Transportation Fellowship: A gift of $500,000 has been donated by the Fondation J. Armand Bombardier to establish an endowment fund to be known as the J. Armand Bombardier Sustainable Transportation Fellowship Endowment Fund (the Bombardier Fund ). The Bombardier Fund will support three fellowships of $5,000 each for graduate students in the School of Community and Regional Planning who are focused on research in any one of three areas: equity and community engagement, population and public health, and environmental and sustainability issues associated with transportation. Each awardee is eligible for an additional $800 in travel funding for research related activities. Recommendations are made by the School of Community and Regional Planning in consultation with the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies. (First available in the 2014/2015 academic year) 2. KATHERINE BREARLEY Scholarship in French: A gift of $150,000 has been donated by Sam LaSelva, in memory of Associate Professor Emerita Katherine Brearley (BA 35, MA 39, Doctorat Université de Paris), to establish an endowment fund to be known as the Katherine Brearley Scholarship in French Endowment Fund (the Brearley Fund ). The Brearley Fund will support scholarships totaling $5,250 to recognize outstanding undergraduate students enrolled in the major or honours program in French. Katherine was a student at UBC in the 1930 s and returned as a faculty member for 30 years after studying in post-war Paris. Katherine helped many students not only through the courses she taught, but also in her capacity as Assistant Dean of Women and later as the first Senior Faculty Advisor in the Faculty of Arts. After retiring in 1980, she continued to teach French to school-aged children, pursued her passion for water colour painting and wrote children s stories. Scholarships are made on the recommendation of the Department of French, Hispanic and Italian Studies. (First award available in the 2014/2015 academic year) Page 3

FOOD SCIENCE Graduate Scholarship: A gift of $237,202.50 has been donated by Eunice Li-Chan, in memory of Alice and Fook Tai Li, to establish an endowment fund to be known as the Food Science Graduate Scholarship Endowment Fund (the Li-Chan Fund ). The Li-Chan Fund will support one or more scholarships totalling $7,000 for students pursuing an MSc or PhD degree in Food Science. The award is made on the recommendation of the Faculty of Land and Food Systems, in consultation with the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies. (First award available in the 2014/2015 academic year) 4. KAM NGAN HO Memorial Scholarship: A gift of $30,000 has been donated by Stephen Cheng, in recognition of his beloved late grandmother Kam Ngan Ho, to establish an endowment fund to be known as the Kam Ngan Ho Memorial Scholarship Endowment Fund (the Ngan Ho Fund ). The Ngan Ho Fund will support a $1,050 scholarship for an undergraduate student in commerce with strong academic standing who has demonstrated outstanding community service. This award is made on the recommendation of the Sauder School of Business. (First award available in the 2019/2020 academic year) 5. EMILY LING Scholarship in Medicine: A gift of $30,000 has been donated by Dr. Emily Ling, a long-time neonatologist at BC Children s Hospital and adjunct professor in the UBC Faculty of Medicine, to establish an endowment fund to be known as the Emily Ling Scholarship in Medicine Endowment (the Ling Fund ). The Ling Fund will support scholarships totaling $1,000 for students in the MD program with a strong academic record, with preference given to those who demonstrate financial need. Awards are made on the recommendation of the Faculty of Medicine. (First award available in the 2013/2014 academic year) NEW AWARDS FINANCIAL NEED-BASED Bursaries: 6. MARTHA JANE LUNSON: With a bequest in the amount of $107,420.97 from the Estate of Martha Jane Lunson, the University will establish an endowment fund to be known as the Martha Jane Lunson Endowment Fund (the Lunson Fund ). The Lunson Fund will support bursaries totaling $3,750 for female students who are in need of financial assistance and who are pursuing a full-time course of studies at the undergraduate level in the Faculty of Land and Food Systems. (First award available in the 2013/2014 academic year) NEW AWARDS SERVICE, LEADERSHIP AND ACTIVITIES 7. JIM AND HELEN HILL Memorial Service Award in Electrical Engineering: With a gift of $30,000 from the estates of UBC alumni Helen Gray ( 56 BSN) and Christopher James (Jim) Hill ( 52 BASc), the University will establish an endowment fund to be known as the Jim and Helen Hill Memorial Service Award in Electrical Engineering (the Hill Engineering Fund ). The Hill Engineering Fund will support awards totaling $8,500. In recognition of the Hills passion for volunteerism, the awards will go to outstanding undergraduate students in the Faculty of Applied Science studying Electrical Engineering who have demonstrated leadership through volunteerism, community service and campus activities. Financial need may be considered. The awards are made on the recommendation of the Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering. (First award available in the 2013/14 academic year) Page 4

8. JIM AND HELEN HILL Memorial Service Award in Nursing: With a gift of $30,000 from the estates of UBC alumni Helen Gray ( 56 BSN) and Christopher James (Jim) Hill ( 52 BASc), the University will establish an endowment fund to be known as the Jim and Helen Hill Memorial Service Award in Nursing (the Hill Nursing Fund ). The Hill Nursing Fund will support awards totalling $8,500. In recognition of the Hills passion for volunteerism in the community, the awards will go to outstanding undergraduate nursing students who have demonstrated leadership through volunteerism, community service and campus activities. Financial need may be considered. The awards are made on the recommendation of the School of Nursing. (First award available in the 2013/14 academic year) 9. HUSTON Family Award in Pharmaceutical Sciences: A gift of $30,000 has been donated by the Huston Family of Abbotsford to establish an endowment fund to be known as the Huston Family Award in Pharmaceutical Sciences Endowment Fund (the Huston Fund ). The gift has been donated in honour of the Huston family s three generations of pharmacists: Frank Huston and his son, Roy Huston (UBC BSc(Pharm)'73), both of Abbotsford (Huston Drugs and Medical Tower Drugs), and Frank's father and brother, W.M. Huston of Ashcroft, and Mervyn J. Huston, Dean Emeritus of Pharmacy at the University of Alberta, respectively. The Huston Fund will support awards totalling $1,000 for undergraduate students of the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences participating in athletics on a competitive level, within or outside UBC. Students must have graduated from a high school in British Columbia. The awards are made upon the recommendation of the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences.
