RULES FOR SOUTH ATLANTIC REGION AWARDS SCALE OF POINTS FOR JUDGING SAR & NGC AWARDS 2017-2019 REGIONAL AWARDS CHAIRMAN: Sharon Jones Mailing and Shipping Address: 85 Surber Drive, Moneta VA 24121-3449 Phone: 540-719-2466; email: toddie1904@aol.com RULES FOR AWARDS 1. AWARDS YEAR: January 1 December 31 2. DEADLINE: January 25 is the deadline for all SAR Award entries to reach the REGIONAL Awards Chairman. All entries are judged by respective states at the STATE level. The State Awards Chairman should MAIL all in one package the state winner of each award to the Regional Awards Chairman for Regional competition, if applicable. A list of state winners being submitted to Regional Awards Chairman must be included in the package. Applications MUST INCLUDE REGIONAL Award Name. 3. APPLICATION FORM: Contains questions/topics to be addressed along with any supporting photographs. Forms are available on the NGC website, www.gardenclub.org, or from the State Awards Chairman. There is a three (3) page limit; use ONLY ONE SIDE of the page. Type using TIMES NEW ROMAN FONT, NO SMALLER THAN size 10. Applications will be accepted in HARD COPY form only. Binders and vinyl sheet protectors are no longer needed nor allowed. Note some exceptions. Applications will NOT be returned after SAR Convention. 4. MEMBER AWARD OF HONOR, YEARBOOKS and PUBLICITY PRESS BOOKS are exceptions, with specific rules, etc. Consult NGC Awards list for these details. 5. CATEGORIES BY CLUB SIZE: Some awards specify awards according to size. Those are: i Small Club: 29 members and under ii Medium Club: 30 59 members iii Large Club: 60 99 members iv Extra-large Club: 100 members + SCALE OF POINTS FOR JUDGING SAR & NGC AWARDS 5 pts. Presentation: neat, concise, includes all required information, does not exceed 3- page limit. 65 pts. Achievement: Scope of project, need and fulfillment; benefit; accomplishment; comprehensive work; activities to attain goals; evaluation of goals reached; educational; prior planning; very brief history of continuing project; financial report; other.

15 pts. Participation: Size of club; involvement of members, community, government agencies, professionals, youth, residents in facilities, others. (Involvement of all these is not required.) 15 pts. Supporting documents: Supporting data (as applicable), clear, well-labeled and neatly attached. Before and After photos, landscape plan (Does not have to be professionally drawn) financial report, letters of appreciation, community awards, recognition, newspaper / magazine articles, radio or TV script, (if possible), etc. Photocopies are permitted, but need to be readable. 100 pts. TOTAL SOUTH ATLANTIC REGION AWARDS, 2017 2019 1. ARBOR DAY TREE PLANTING/ACTIVITIES $25may be awarded to a club with the most outstanding tree planting activity and/or promotion of conservation and preservation of trees and/or Arbor Day Activities. i. Small Club; ii Medium Club; iii Large Club; iv Ex-large Club 2. BIRD PROTECTION $25 award to a club conducting the most comprehensive and effective project for bird protection and welfare, such as sanctuaries, providing food, houses and promoting law enforcement relative to bird welfare. ( NGC# EC-4) i Small Club; ii Medium Club; iii Large Club; iv Ex-Large Club 3. PROTECTING OUR POLLINATORS AWARD $25 may be awarded to a club, group of clubs or council for the most comprehensive and effective project on our POLLINATORS, e.g. habitat protection, protection of migratory routes, public education, establishment of a butterfly garden at a school or community site. Monarch Way Stations may be part of this project. ( NGC # EC-5) 4. COMMUNITY BEAUTIFICATION / LANDSCAPE DESIGN AWARD $25 may be awarded for the most distinguished civic improvement for public benefit, e.g. establishing sanctuaries, municipal gardens, landscaping public buildings, etc. Copy of landscape plan must be included. Commercial projects not eligible. (NGC# CB-2 possibly NGC # L-4 or L-6) CS-2-AB i. Small Club; ii. Medium Club; iii. Large Club; iv. Ex-large Club 5. ENVIRONMENTAL/ CONSERVATION AWARD $25 may be awarded to a club, group of clubs or council for the most concentrated activity / study / project to improve our environment (such as soil, water, energy, air and / or natural resources). (NGC # EC-3 ) 6. GARDEN THERAPY ACTIVITIES / HEALING GARDEN AWARD

A $25 cash award to a club, council, or group of clubs having the most outstanding garden Therapy program in which a Healing Garden is an integral part. Projects using plant materials with handicapped or elderly persons in institutions or organized care programs for nursing homes, etc. to arrange flowers with the residents. Evidence must show handi-capped or elderly persons involvement in the Garden. (NGC#CS-5) 7. PROJECT GARDEN THERAPY HORTICULTURE AWARD A $25 cash award to a club reporting the most outstanding program establishing a garden(s) to benefit the physically or learning-challenged in nursing homes, schools, prisons, low income housing, Habitat for Humanity, etc. Includes barrier-free gardens, accessible gardens, meditation garden at a hospital, etc. (NGC # G-3) i. Small Club; ii. Medium Club; iii. Large Club; iv. Ex-large Club 8. HISTORIC PRESERVATION A $25 award to a club, group of clubs or council for the most outstanding project continuing or completing work on a historic preservation project, such as a trail, park, cemetery, garden or grounds around a historic building and/or garden of importance to local, state or national heritage. ( NGC # HP-1, HP-2) A. Single member garden club, by size B. Group of member clubs/council 9. PUBLICATION: CLUB NEWSLETTER AWARD $25 may be awarded for the best overall club newsletter; certificates for category winners. Newsletter published 3 or more times / year under one editorship. Notices and flyers for onetime events do not apply. Submit only 3 sample issues and state the number of issues per year. Printed or electronic distribution newsletters are eligible; however, printed copies must be submitted for SAR judging. Categories: 1. Newsletter of one 8 ½ x 11 or 8 ½ x 14 paper. 2. Newsletter of 3 12 pages. Eligibility for categories: A. Single member garden club i. Small Club; ii. Medium Club; iii. Large Club; iv. Ex-large Club. (NGC # PUB-1, 2B, 3B, 4,B) 10. NATIVE FLOWERING TREES LANDSCAPE AWARD A $25 award to a club, council, or group of clubs for the most outstanding project in landscaping the grounds of a school or other public building USING a number of NATIVE FLOWERING TREES / SHRUBS. Application must include a detailed report of landscape plans, history, costs and publicity. (NGC#NPW-1) 11. NATIONAL GARDEN WEEK $25 may be awarded for the best overall promotion of National Garden Week; entry to show National Garden Week awareness throughout the ENTIRE week, and MUST include local and or state National Garden Week proclamation. Winner in each category will receive a Certificate of Award. (NGC # MP-2)

BEST SLIDE, VIDEO OR POWER POINT PROGRAM A $25 award to an individual member, group of members or club submitting the most outstanding program via slides, video or power point that has been presented at a meeting of a Club, group of clubs or council. NGC #(MP-4 A) B. BEST PROGRAM (without slides, video or power point) A $25 award to an individual member, group of members or club submitting the most outstanding program without slides, video or power point that has been presented at a meeting of a club, Council or group of clubs. NGC #(MP-4 B) 13. PUBLIC RELATIONS AWARD A $25 award to a club, group of clubs or council for the most thorough involvement of other Civic organizations, businesses and agencies, etc. in garden club projects, activities and programming for the year. (NGC# CS-1B) 14. ROADSIDE IMPROVEMENT AWARD $25 may be awarded to a club, group of clubs or council for notable enhancement of roadsides and rest areas using wildflowers and/ or native plants. Project may be sited on rural byways, urban highways, roadside rest areas, entrances to towns, medians, etc. (NGC # CS-1, NPW-1B) 15. STANDARD FLOWER SHOW SCHEDULE AWARDS A. SINGLE CLUB A $25 award for the best Standard Flower Show SCHEDULE. B. TWO OR MORE CLUBS OR COUNCIL AWARD A $25 award for the best Standard Flower Show SCHEDULE. 16. LANDSCAPE DESIGN FOR CHURCH GARDENS AWARD $25 may be awarded for planning and planting of a church or synagogue garden that meets the needs of the congregation. Overall best in each category to be awarded: A. Single garden club B. Individual garden club member ( NGC# L-6) 17. PLANT IT PINK AWARD $25 will be awarded for the most outstanding and innovative NEW project by a club or council emphasizing the planting of PINK gardens using pink flowers and/or foliage to make the public aware of the fight against breast cancer. 18. VISION OF BEAUTY CALENDAR SALES

A $25 cash award to the club selling the largest number of VISION OF BEAUTY Calendars. The winner to be determined on a percentage basis. Send this information to your State Awards Chairman. A. Based on total calendars sold B. Based on calendars per member (FD-1) 19. BLUE STAR MEMORIAL LANDSCAPING $25 award for the most outstanding Blue Star Memorial landscaping project by a club, council or group of clubs. Project must include a Blue Star Memorial Marker, a Blue Star Memorial Byway Marker, or a Blue Star Memorial Marker at a National Cemetery or Veterans Administration Medical Center. The marker and landscaping may be part of a highway department rest area maintained by the department. The project may have been continuous, but major landscaping must be completed within two years. The project may be a replacement for a destroyed or long-neglected landscape. ( NGC # L-1 B, L-2 B, L-3 B) 20. NATIONAL LIFE MEMBERSHIP AWARD $25 will be awarded to the state gaining the most new National Life Members during the award year. The percentage of state membership determines the winner. The NGC Life Membership Chairman will provide the number of new members. (MP-8) 21. WATER CONSERVATION AWARD $25 may be awarded to the club providing the most thorough programming on Water Conservation. May include legislation, erosion control, watershed protection, clean waterways activities, etc., all stressing importance of WATER. ( NGC # EC-6) 22. WEBSITE AWARD $25 may be awarded for the most outstanding website promoting club, state, SAR and NGC objectives. Provide on the NGC (SAR) Awards Application Form the website address, who maintains the site, how often updated and cost. Ease of navigation will be considered while judging from the current site. Clubs, councils and districts may apply. (NGC MP-3 A) SCALE OF POINTS FOR WEBSITE JUDGING Presentation: Design/ Appearance: attractive, engaging, easy to view; layout..25 pts. Navigation: Ease of navigation, navigation system (bar, map, etc.), logical flow of pages, Clear page headers, links acive.35 pts. Achievement: Club / group information present/ ease to find, educational.20 pts Promotion: Promotes club, state, NGC and SAR objectives..10 pts.

Maintenance: Does it appear to be updated?..10 pts. 23. SAR LIFE MEMBERSHIP AWARD TOTAL.. 100 pts. $25 is awarded to the state having the most NEW regional life memberships since the previous SAR Convention. Cut-off time will be the evening meal on the first full day of convention in 2018 & 2019. 24. SAR CONVENTION REGISTRATION AWARD $25award to the NON-HOST STATE with the most SAR Convention Registrations RECEIVED by MARCH 1. Convention Registrar to provide this information for SAR Awards Chairman. 25. YOUTH EDUCATION AWARD $25 may be awarded to a garden club MEMBER or a SENIOR GARDEN CLUB providing educational programs/activities that promote NGC objectives for youth in any setting, such as classroom, 4-H Clubs, Scouts, Junior, Intermediate or High School Gardeners. ( NGC # YR-2)) 26. YEARBOOKS: See NGC Award # 16 for ALL CATEGORIES of Yearbooks, the Rules and Judging Scale and enter accordingly, using SAR Award # 26 A, 26 B, 26 D, or 26 E. 27. SAR PUBLICITY PRESS BOOK AWARDS Publicity press books may be awarded certificates for the quality, quantity and diversity of coverage in the print media. Read NGC AWARD # 44 Publicity Press Book for requirements and scale of points upon which the books are judged. Send press book to SAR REGIONAL Publicity Press Book Chairman by FEBRUARY 23. CATEGORIES A. Single Member garden clubs i. Small Club ii. Medium Club iii. Large Club iv. Ex-large Club B. Group of member clubs, councils districts C. YOUTH CLUB AWARD $25 may be awarded to the overall best Junior / Intermediate Garden Club and the MEMBER GARDEN CLUB sponsoring the youth club, which has been most successful in promoting all phases of garden club work. Indicate grade/s, sponsor, list of programs presented to the youth, meeting dates, and number of youth involved. Do not duplicate with other junior or intermediate awards.

A. Grades 1 3 B. Grades 4 6 C. Grades 7 9 D. Other (NGC # Y-1) 29. YOUTH ACTIVITIES AWARD $25 may be awarded to a Youth Group for the most outstanding work in any of the National Garden Club objectives. This includes outstanding local projects with full information provided. Include pictures, publicity and comments. Extra credit for groups organized through garden clubs as Junior, Intermediate and High School Gardeners. (NGC#Y-2) 30. NGC YOUTH POETRY CONTEST $10 and an Honor Certificate will be presented to the winners of grade levels K 9th grade and Special Education & ESL Students. A $25 award will be given to the student with the overall best poem. 2017-2018 Title Let It Grow 2018-2019 Title Pop Goes The Seed DEADLINE both years: February 14. Students MUST FOLLOW NGC Rules. NGC HIGH SCHOOL ESSAY CONTEST $200 will be awarded to the SAR Essay Contest winner. Open to all high school students. See NGC Contest Rules. YOUTH RECYCLABLE SCULPTURE CONTEST $10 and an Honor Certificate will be awarded to the SAR youth sculpture winners of grade levels 4 8. $25 will be awarded to the student with the overall best sculpture made of recyclable items for designated grade levels. Students must follow NGC rules.
