Winter 2019 CANES CONNECTIONS Welcome to the Saint Anthony Catholic School Alumni E-newsletter for Saint Anthony Alumni, Family and Friends. In this issue: We are preparing for 100 years! Upcoming Events Catholic Schools Week Canes Christmas Events & Reunions Class Rep Congratulations Class Pictures A Note from the Principal Dear Alum & Friends, Happy New Year. We just finished our annual celebration of Catholic Schools Week. Students participated in the Souper Bowl where they could wear their team colors for Super Bowl if they brought in a can of Soup! We made angel wings (made with all students thumbprints and 8 th grade handprints) and a Phoenix to share our stories of courage. On Thursday we tested our knowledge on the Bible through the Bible Bowl and we ended the week with our Grandparents Day event. What a great way to celebrate our choice to be in a Catholic School. I am sure you agree that it is a choice that follows you through life in such a positive way. Below is a poem that I think sums up who we are. Please remember our staff and students in your prayers and continue to support our ongoing events and traditions. Wishing you many Blessings for 2019. Terry Maus Principal Founded in 1926, Saint Anthony will be 93 years old! We are the oldest Catholic school in Broward County. We encourage you to update your info so we can keep you informed of the great things that are happening. Also send any favorite memories, thoughts, pictures or accomplishments since you left. Please contact us at alumni@stanthonyftl.org. We would love to hear from you! A School Like No Other Samantha Baldwin Saint Anthony 8 th Grade Student Upcoming Events: Last week was Catholic Schools week! 2/21 Ladies Night 3/2 First Communion 3/16 St. Patrick s Day Parade 4/5 Confirmation 4/10-12 Drama Production at Bienes 4/11 Gentlemen's Dinner 5/3 May Crowning 5/4 Spaghetti Dinner 5/24 Passing of the Torch May High School Letter Signing & Pizza Party 5/31 Graduation 6/5 Last Day of School Through the hallways and the classrooms, For days after days, The light of God surrounds us, Like an altar candle ablaze. From the outside we re a normal school, Like every school before. But look deeper and you ll see a school Where students strive for more. Our teachers keep us on our paths, Sometimes we ll make a mistake, But they continue to help us better ourselves And choose which path to take. But academics isn t all, No, STREAM isn t the end. For after all we ve done together, We ll leave this school as friends. While each one of us is different, And you are not like me, Anyone here will tell you that Our school is a family.

Catholic Schools Week Saint Anthony Catholic School celebrated Catholic Schools Week during the last week of January. It is an annual tradition that began in 1974. Catholic schools across the nation commemorate Catholic Schools Week with celebrations, special Masses, open houses, and activities for students, the families, parishioners, and community members. Through these events, schools focus on the value Catholic education provides to our students and its contributions to Church, local communities and the nation. This year we held a Souper Bowl on Monday. Students and teachers wore the colors of their favorite team and brought in canned goods. Students also wrote about Why they are thankful for receiving a Catholic Education. On Tuesday our students participated in an Angel Wing project. Wednesday was Student Appreciation Day and students wore their Spirit day shirts and had ice cream. That night grades 1 and 2 held an International night. On Thursday we held a Bible Bowl in the gym. Friday was our annual Grandparents day with a special mass and performances. It was a wonderful week at Saint Anthony Catholic School!

Canes Christmas Connection We held our second Canes Christmas Connection on Sunday, December 15th, for all of our alum and especially for our alumni in college and those looking for jobs or career advice. We had alum from all years attend to welcome our college alum home for Christmas. Special alumni and community professional guests also attended and offered career assistance. This annual event is a wonderful opportunity for our alumni college students and we hope to see the event grow in the coming years. Class of 1970 WHERE ARE YOU? Your classmates want to have a 50th reunion next year! Jane Burrell (janeburrell@hotmail.com) and Michelle Lyon King (malyon56@aol.com) are both interested in being on a reunion committee. Please email alumni@stanthonyftl.org to update your contact info, to join the reunion committee or for more information. High School Alum Classes 2016-2019 Your Annual Letter Writing & Pizza Party will be in May. We will let you know as soon as we find a good date. Looking forward to seeing our SACS classes of 2015-2018! Have you recently moved? Changed jobs? Newsworthy success?? We want to hear from you! Please email: alumni@stanthonyftl.org WE NEED YOU! We are looking for CLASS REPRESENTATIVES to help strengthen our alumni database & our communications. CLASS REPS will serve as liaisons between each graduating class, the alumni community and the school. Each class can have one or more Class Reps. CLASS REPS will engage & communicate with classmates, encourage them to share news, updates & keep their contact info current. Alumni news is essential in developing pride in our school, in terms of promoting spirit as well as creating a sense of pride in alumni accomplishments, which are shared by all alum & the school. Please email alumni@stanthonyftl.org to be a CLASS REP!

Congratulations to our alum! Congrats to Bella and Dallas Dorosy on their NCAA National Championship in soccer! Bella 13 and Dallas 11 both played soccer at STA and were on the FSU Seminoles championship team. Bella played in four matches during her sophomore season in 2018. Dallas appeared in every game during her senior season, only one of four players to appear in every game. She recorded seven goals and two assists, with six of her goals coming against ranked opponents including three total against #3 North Carolina in the ACC Championship and NCAA National Championship games. Dallas scored the lone goal in the NCAA National Championship in the Seminoles 1-0 victory over the Tar Heels to win their second national title. She scored the Seminoles first two goals over North Carolina and assisted on the gamewinner in the ACC Championship Game in route to FSU s sixth conference title. Bella was named the College Cup Most Outstanding Player on Offense, was on the College Cup All-Tournament Team, was the ACC Tournament MVP and was on the ACC All-Tournament Team. Congrats to Aidan 16 and Colin Breslin 15 on being named to the Sun Sentinel and Miami Herald s First Team All County, Cross Country. At the State Championships, the STA boys cross country team was ranked 8 th coming in and finished in 5 th place. STA recognized Aidan, a junior, as the 2018 Runner of the Year. He was the BCAA Champion, the District Champion, the Regional Runner-up and finished in 9 th place at the State Championships. Colin was the team captain at STA and placed third in the BCAA meet, was the district runner-up and was 21 st at the state meet. He also took 15 th in the FACA Senior All-Star Classic. Pictured is Colin and Aidan and mom, Kara McCormick Breslin 83. Congratulations to three of our high school alum, all 2015 graduates of Saint Anthony Catholic School and currently seniors at STA, on their college signings on National Signing Day on February 6th! Trey West signed with Elon for football. Sophia Savaglio signed with Florida Southern for lacrosse. Curt Casteel signed with Harvard University for football. We are all so very proud of you! Congratulations to our school! Congrats to the Saint Anthony Catholic School Robotics Club! They won top honors, the Champion Award, at the Middle School Qualifying Tournament in January. They now advance to the Regional Competition later this month. Good luck! Congrats to the boys varsity soccer team on their perfect season and championship! Our teams have won soccer championships before but it was our school s very first varsity boys soccer team undefeated record. With 23 players on the roster, Coach Mike Garcia had one of his largest teams but was able to have a 95 participation rate in practices and games. He has coached the Hurricanes for the last eight years. Great job to the Coach and the team!
