ETCETERA... Welcome to Lent! Now that we re no longer distracted by the Super Bowl, Lunar New Year, Mardi Gras, Valentine s Day, etc. (okay, St. Joseph Altars and St. Patrick s Day parades are still coming!), we can focus on the spring cleaning that Lent is about. It s the time when the Church encourages us to do penance, to be reminded of our humanity with all our limitations, including our mortality, a time when we come face to face with the reality that we can t make it on our own, that we aren t self-sufficient, that we can t pull ourselves up by our bootstraps, so that we can be more firmly anchored in God s love and his promise to sustain us and save us. Many who consider themselves enlightened dismiss the concept of giving up during Lent and advocate that we need to do something. Lest we too easily and readily buy into this pseudo sophistication, remember that the spiritual discipline of giving up has its important place in our spiritual lives, helping us to become detached from the things and people that hinder our relationship with God and with one another and inviting us to reflect more deeply the mystery of being human, alive only because of God s love and kindness. So, whether we give up something or do something extra for Lent, let our goal be union with God and with one another. May I encourage you to review the offerings the parish offers during Lent, from the Soup-and-Substance gatherings on Mondays to The Light Is On For You on Wednesdays to the Lectio Divina spirituality sessions for young married couples also on Wednesdays to several other opportunities for spiritual growth and enrichment. The Mardi Gras Parade Viewing Party was quite a success. The response was overwhelming and it s definitely going to be an annual event. I m grateful to Tracy Evans, the overall chair of the Mardi Gras Committee, as well as Marcelle Kogel and Katie Goodlife, who coordinated the viewing party, as well as numerous others who helped pull this huge enterprise together, including the Knights of Columbus who are always willing and ready to help whenever asked. Although the Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes and the World Day of Prayer for the Sick was on 11 February, we at St. Aloysius will celebrate the Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick later, on Saturday, 23 February, after the 4:30 pm Mass. We haven t celebrated this sacrament communally in a while and I wanted to bring this practice back into the life of the parish, to pray for God s healing grace and power for the members of our parish family who are ill. This Sunday, 17 February, we will celebrate the Rite of Sending at the 9:00 am Mass, ritually sending the RCIA catechumens and candidates in our parish to the Rite of Election at 5:30 pm at St. Joseph Cathedral. I m scheduled for the 5:30 pm Mass so won t be able to join them at this moving gathering. Please keep in your prayers these catechumens and candidates as they engage in a more intense period of preparation for the celebration of the sacraments of initiation at the Easter Vigil. MEN S CLUB LSU Night Come tour the new Basketball Practice Facility and listen to LSU Men s Basketball Coach Johnny Jones Cont d from page 2 The BBC website recently reports that an atheist church in North London is proving a big hit with non-believers where the sermons include the message that we are all going to die and that s that! A congregation of more than 300 crowded into the shell of a deconsecrated church to join the celebration on Sunday morning. Instead of hymns, the non-faithful get to their feet to sing along to Stevie Wonder and Queen songs. The readings are from Alice in Wonderland and a power-point presentation from a particle physicist, Dr Harry Cliff, who explains the origins of antimatter theory. It s a strange world! Peace! The St. Aloysius Men s Club Social Gathering Thursday, February 21, 2013 Appetizers at Walk-On s at 5:00 p.m. & tour the Basketball Facility around 6:30 p.m. We will gather outside the entrance of the facility near the tennis complex prior to entering if you need to meet us on campus. OPENING THE DOOR OF FAITH: Live out your faith STEWARDSHIP OF OFFERING RENEWAL Each year during this time, we pause as a parish community to review and renew our stewardship commitments of time, talent, and treasure to our Parish. It is an important process for every Catholic parishioner as much for your personal spiritual growth as it is for our many parish needs. Or put another way, we help you satisfy your basic Christian need to give back to God while helping satisfy our need to educate, form and serve the people of God. With each gift you give threefold to yourself, to your church, and to God our Father. There is no way possible we would have what we have and do what we do, without your stewardship renewal commitments. Together, we are building on earth, the Kingdom of God. This year we are seeking a 100% response rate of commitment cards. This year, please make an offering to the Lord with a grateful heart, and choose to become a weekly envelope user if you are not already one. You can complete the commitment card by clicking here and the bank draft here. You may submit your forms electronically by emailing them to cdardenne@staloysiusparish.com. American Saints, Blesseds and Venerables during the Year of Faith Blessed Francis Xavier Seelos, C.Ss.R. Missionary preacher As a child, Blessed Francis Xavier Seelos, C.Ss.R. used to claim that he didn't simply want to imitate his patron saint: he wanted to be another St.Francis Xavier. He entered the seminary in Augsburg after completing a degree in Philosophy. While there, he heard about the missionary activity of the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer, and traveled to North America, specifically to become a Redemptorist priest. For nine years, he worked as the assistant of St. John Neumann in the parish of St. Philomena in Pittsburgh. He dedicated himself to the mission of preaching, and, before long, he had attained a reputation as an excellent preacher and an insightful, attentive spiritual director. He was also known for a happy availability for anyone who might need him at any time. He became pastor of the church of St. Mary of the Assumption in New Orleans, and died there of yellow fever while nursing the sick during an epidemic. Source: usccb.org www.seelos.org Ministry Highlights Men s Club By: Derek Fife The Men s Club is a terrific opportunity to get to know the men of the parish and has been an enjoyable experience for me to give back. After joining the Parish in 2002 the Men s Club has been my avenue to getting involved and I am appreciative of the opportunity. Through the Men s Club I have become more involved in the parish, met many great people, and have developed friendships I will keep forever. I encourage all of the men of the parish to participate in this group and try to attend as many of the functions as possible so you too can be enlighten by the opportunities that St. Aloysius has to offer. The St. Aloysius Men s Club is an association of men that gather 4 times a year to promote social interaction. The membership is open to any male 18 years of age or older and the members do not have to be members of the parish or even Catholic, just have an interest in the St. Aloysius community. The Men s Club conducts its meetings in the parish hall and the meetings are simply a meet and greet with dinner and a speaker. The events are very relaxed and it is a great opportunity for you to meet other men in the parish and interact. By joining the Men s Club and participating at the events you have the ability to meet new people and interact with your fellow parishioners all while enjoying a first class event. This year, we have had two very successful meetings. The first was Steak Night with a terrific guest speaker Sid Gautreaux. We had over 130 attendees. The second event was our Evening of Reflection with Father Al Davidson and again we had a record turnout. Our next event will be LSU Night which is, Thursday February 21 which will actually be a tour of the newly completed LSU Basketball complex and will feature Johnny Jones, the LSU Men s Basketball Coach as a guest speaker. Our final event to close the year will be the Crawfish Boil which is a couples event and it is scheduled for Friday April 12, 2013. February 17, 2013 7 1st Sunday of Lent
