O U R V I S I O N For everyone in the Cubitt Town Community: We will CARE for each other - ensuring our community remains happy at all times. We will treat each other with respect and use language that shows this. We will COLLABORATE with each other. We work as a team. We enter Cubitt Town ready to learn and support each other in our learning journeys. We COMMUNICATE with each other. We ask for help and use words of support and listen. We CHALLENGE ourselves. We don t give up even when things seem hard. WE have a can do attitude! We are CURIOUS - we try new things and learn from our mistakes. We are COMMITTED - to learning, to each other, to our environment. We know that ONLY OUR BEST IS GOOD ENOUGH and so we aspire to be the best that we can be academically, socially and creatively. O U R V A L U E S We CARE about ourselves and learning. We COLLABORATE with all. We COMMUNICATE because it is important. We CHALLENGE ourselves. We are CURIOUS people and learners. WE are COMMITTED to lifelong learning. We aspire to be ONLY THE BEST that we can be! SUPPORTING PUPILS WITH MEDICAL CONDITIONS POLICY PAGE 2

RATIONALE At Cubitt Town Junior School, we want to support all of our pupils both with their education and any short or long-term medical conditions. We follow the 2015 DfE statutory guidance (2015) - Supporting pupils at school with medical conditions - which is attached at the end of this policy. Attendance of pupils is very important, and so school will administer medication prescribed by a GP, as long as the medication is brought to the office by the pupil s parent. The medication must have the dispensing label showing the name of the pupil and the dosage. The parent will need to sign a form at the office giving their permission for the medication to be administered by a member of our staff. There is an office fridge available where prescribed medication can be kept, and it is expected that the parent brings it to the office and collects it daily for the course of the medication. MEDICAL CONDITIONS Asthma All asthma pumps are stored in zip-lock bags, clearly labelled with the child s name. A small book in each bag is provided, where details of where the pump is used is recorded. A care plan for each child will be written for each pupil with asthma by the School Nurse in conjunction with the parent. Pumps are taken to all P.E. lessons and are also carried by either the class teacher or TA when out of school on a trip. Allergies Any child who has an allergy requiring an EpiPen has a care plan, written for them by the School Nurse in conjunction with their parent. EpiPens are kept at the front desk in the school office- each pupil who has a prescribed EpiPen has their own box with their care plan inside it. EpiPens are carried by either the class teacher or TA when out of school on a trip. Any child who has an allergy requiring Piriton has a care plan, written for them by the School Nurse in conjunction with their parent. Their Piriton is kept in the school office. If a pupil has a bottle of Piriton prescribed to them for school, it will be carried by either the class teacher or TA when out of school on a trip. In the dining hall, all pupils with food allergies have their pictures clearly displayed by the food serving area, with their allergies listed underneath. Diabetes SUPPORTING PUPILS WITH MEDICAL CONDITIONS POLICY PAGE 3

Any child who has diabetes has a care plan, written for them by the School Nurse in conjunction with their parent. The school has facilities to store insulin in the office fridge if needed. The school will work closely with the family of any pupil with diabetes to ensure continuity of care, and the passing of important information between home and school on a daily basis as needed. Any staff member working regularly with a pupil with diabetes has attended the Management of Diabetes in Schools Training, run by the Barts Health NHS Trust. Other medical conditions The school will seek advice on any other medical condition as needed from the School Nurse, and a care plan will be written in conjunction with the School Nurse and their parent if needed. Any adult working regularly with a child with on-going medical needs will know about their needs and will be sent on additional training if needed.
