The SENTINEL NEWS A publication of the Steilacoom High School Booster Club December 2016 From the Administrator s Office: Mike Miller, Principal SHS Booster Club Plays An Important Role In Your Student s Education Steilacoom High School would not be the school that it is today without the unending support of our Booster Club and its volunteers. When a Booster Club is brought up in most high schools, it conjures up an image of a group of parents working to raise funds for a particular sport or extra-curricular club, like basketball for example. Although our Booster Club is similar in that we do have a group of parents and community members working to raise funds, the difference is our Booster Group's focus is all 950 of our students at Steilacoom. Besides all of the volunteer hours that the club provides our school, they are also extremely generous in their financial support of our students. Whether it is financial support for a student struggling to buy a dress for a State Choir competition, a contribution to help our Soccer Team get new travel bags, or volunteering time to help us have the best Veteran's Day Assembly in years, we have come to count on the support from our Booster Club for a number of daily, weekly, and annual events. Not only do they support our students, they support our staff as well. Their Booster Buddy program helps keeps our teachers spirits high, and their monthly staff appreciation lunches are something we all look forward to as well. One of the main reasons we are Steilly Strong is in large part due to the support that these dedicated volunteers have given to us. We try to instill in our students a desire for servant leadership. The Steilacoom Booster Club is indeed a great example of the servant leadership which can be seen in our everyday life at Steilacoom. I encourage all parents to consider being more involved with our Booster Club as a way to both lead by example, as well as playing an important role in your student s education. Mike Miller Principal

Red Ribbon Bazaar Saturday, December 3rd STEILACOOM HIGH SCHOOL 54 Sentinel Drive, Steilacoom 9 am 4 pm Lots of vendors, silent tree auction, award-winning choir and other performances, home-made and handcrafted arts, crafts, and other items PERFECT for holiday giving! Proceeds from the Red Ribbon Bazaar benefit all students at Steilacoom High School through grants administered by the SHS Booster Club. Your support of the Bazaar provides on-going support to the students.

Volunteers Needed Brighten Someone s Day! Be a Booster Buddy! We have a wonderful tradition here at SHS it s called the Booster Buddy Program! As a parent, you will get a staff member (and a list of info/favorites) to surprise once a month with encouraging notes or treats. You, or your student, simply drop something off at the office to be put into a staff mailbox. Secret Santa doesn t work only in December have fun all year until we reveal to your Buddy who you are in May. We are STILL in NEED of Booster Buddes for this year. Please consider participating in this great program! Thank you! Kim Boyd teamboyd@comcast.net STAFF APPRECIATION Here s a volunteer opportunity that doesn t require you to leave the comfort of your own home! If you are willing to provide a meal item (ranging from salads to rolls, to main dishes to desserts), we have the perfect opportunity for you to participate in Booster Club activities. The hard-working, dedicated teachers who help guide our children through school and life really appreciate these monthly meals as a way to relax and re-charge during their hectic days. You can be an important part of this project and you don t even have to make an appearance! Contact Christine Mullen for details christinemullen@mac.com Many thanks to the dedicated parents and friends who came out to assist with the Fall sports events. Our hardy crew sold tickets and manned the concession stand for football and basketball games held at Steilacoom. The Booster Club thanks everyone for their AMAZING participation in this year's Red Ribbon Bazaar - community volunteers, parents, teachers, school clubs, scout troops, musicians, vendors and shoppers! When the RRB does well, YOU do well. We've heard of clubs raising more than $500 for themselves at this event alone. How awesome is that?! Share your RRB success story with us at redribbonbazaar@hotmail.com and we'll see you next year, as always on the first Saturday in December... Happy Holidays to all! Red Ribbon out!

NEWS FROM CLASS REPRESENTATIVES CLASS OF 2017 The Class of 2017 Grad party Committee has been meeting since March to plan the Class of 2017 Graduation Party and fundraising events to pay for it. Fundraisers have included a raffle (which will continue through the Red Ribbon Bazaar this weekend), senior shirt sales, and an auction on Oct 22nd. The cost for our senior s graduation party is $20,000, and we have raised approximately $12,000 towards that amount. Grad Party tickets will go on sale in the Spring, and the fundraising we do now will help keep the ticket price affordable for all seniors. Raffle tickets are still available, and are being sold for $5.00 each raffle prizes include a laptop computer, flat screen TV and sound bar, Fitbit Surge, Bose earbuds, and more! We will sell raffle tickets at the Red Ribbon Bazaar held at SHS on Saturday, Dec 3, and we encourage all Senior parents to help us sell tickets after that.
