Mission & Impact Statements Mission To train diverse, committed individuals, ages 25-40, to effectively participate on boards of nonprofit organizations and make a difference in the community by replenishing the volunteer leadership. Background The Young Leaders Council (YLC) is a program founded by the Council of Community Services, in conjunction with the Frist Foundation (formerly the HCA Foundation) and the United Way. It was created in 1985 to address the need to broaden and strengthen Nashville's volunteer leadership base. The YLC consists of an elevensession training program, addressing fundamental board skills. These interactive sessions reflect on such leadership indicators as collaboration, diversity and the role of catalyst deemed crucial for today's nonprofit leadership roles. The training is followed by a year internship with a community agency. At this time, the YLC participant serves as a non-voting member of a working board. Participants are between 25 and 40 years of age and come from a broad range of corporate, civic and volunteer backgrounds. They may be nominated by YLC alumni, their group's management or may be self-nominated with management's recommendation. A YLC alumni group makes activities available to those who wish to continue their involvement. Community & Corporate Support: Much of the success of the Young Leaders Council has been due to the active participation of community business leaders and agency directors. They have most willingly given of their time and expertise in the training of Young Leaders. The corporate business leaders provide valuable insight into such topics as legal liabilities; corporate giving; what to look for in a board; and how the social service system works. Thus, a balanced, objective picture of community volunteer leadership is presented to the Young Leaders. Impact Goals : 1. Become more financially independent; 2. To increase the involvement of the alums; 3. To have consistent branding in our marketing. Accomplishments: 1. Increased alumni funding; 2. Increased corporate funding; 3. Enhanced website services; 4.Continued & improved quality of program and services Other ways to donate, support, or volunteer By mail- 2200 21st Avenue S., Ste. 260, Nashville, TN 37212Online- www.youngleaderscouncil.org/donate Service Categories Primary Organization Category Public & Societal Benefit / Leadership Development Areas of Service Areas Served TN - Cheatham TN - Davidson TN - Maury TN - Robertson TN - Rutherford TN - Williamson TN - Wilson Young Leaders participants come from Davidson County and surrounding counties but the organization also serves nonprofits in those counties. 2

CEO Statement Young Leaders Council is a very unique nonprofit that feels a need and a void in the community. If a young professional 25-40 years of age has just moved to Nashville, lived in Nashville and just moved back and is looking for an entryway onto a board of a nonprofit or a way to get involved in community service in a leadership position, Young Leaders can serve that need for them. If they are already on a board, they can be trained to know what a board member s roles & responsibilities are. Boards are looking for sharp, enthusiastic, energetic, passionate people to be board members of their organization. Also, they are looking for young professionals that possess these qualities that can replenish the volunteer leadership on their boards in the future. Young Leaders fills these needs, and they are the only nonprofit in Nashville that does this. Trained board members are unusual, yet, are very needed for boards. As an Executive Director of Young Leaders, it is so exciting to have the opportunity to meet so many wonderful young professionals who are so motivated, intelligent, hard working and successful, but who still have a desire to give back to their community by giving of their time and talents. It is so inspiring and encouraging to see them become the leaders of our future and community. Young Leaders is small in operations, but is producing a powerful product. We have approximately 100 participants go through our program each year. They all are then placed on the boards of nonprofit of their choice to be an intern for a year where they can observe and participate. That s 100 people a year giving back to our community---governing, leading, and volunteering for nonprofits all over the city. Our continued goal and desire is to be fiscally fit and responsible so that we can continue producing our powerful product--- volunteer leaders in our community. 3
