Introduction About the program and Haiti Pre-K and primary curriculum About the program: Health Care for Haiti s Children: Through School Nursing is Middleham and St. Peter s Lenten project for 2019. Churches throughout our area are encouraged to adopt the project in order to learn: About the need for health care for children in Haiti, How this program addresses that need, and How churches can support it. This Lenten project is presented through a five-week curriculum with versions for younger children, middle school and teens, and for adults. Each week has a lesson, scripture reading, and prayer, and some have crafts. We encourage churches to make this a Lenten commitment for the whole church family, including the three age groups. All funds raised go to the project for nurses compensation, supplies, and equipment. The project is being undertaken through a partnership between Middleham and St. Peter s Parish in Lusby, Calvert County and the Episcopal University School of Nursing in Haiti (FSIL). The objective is to bring health care to children where there is very little health care. Through school nursing, improved health can be brought to nearly 1,000 students in three schools in Leogane, Haiti. This is the second phase of a project begun by Middleham and St. Peter s in 2011 in response to the 2010 earthquake. The concept was successfully modeled in a school in the north for 3 ½ years and replicated in two other sites. This second phase is bringing care to three more schools, with the intent to sustain the project in Leogane and replicate the project across Haiti with the support of FSIL. You may find that information and resources in one curriculum are helpful in the other two, so we encourage you to review all three. If you have questions or would like further assistance, you may contact Hugh Davies at 410-326-0370 or daviesh@comcast.net. Funds raised by your church for this project are to be sent to: Middleham and St. Peter's Parish P.O. Box 277, Lusby, MD 20657 Make check payable to Middleham and St. Peter s Parish Please note on the memo line: 2019 Lenten Project 1

Week 1 March 10 About Haiti Pre-K and primary curriculum Where is Haiti? Haiti is a country southeast of Cuba in the Caribbean Sea. It is on the western side of the island of Hispaniola. The Dominican Republic occupies the eastern half. Where is Leogane? The project is located in Leogane, which is 18 miles west of Port-au-Prince, the capital. On Google Maps or using a world map find where your church is located and trace a line to Leogane, Haiti. People in Haiti are just like us but Haiti is not like Maryland. 2

People in Haiti go to the market, not the grocery store. People in Haiti do not have running water in their houses. They come to a central location where they can get it and carry it back to their homes in large buckets or cans. 3

They use donkeys to carry their loads, not cars. They like to play soccer, just like we do. Remind students that the money they collect in Lent will go to support the nurses and students in Haiti that we ll meet and talk about over the next few weeks. 4

.Scripture Isaiah 54:10 For the mountains may depart and the hills be removed, but my steadfast love shall not depart from you, and my covenant of peace shall not be removed, says the LORD, who has compassion on you. Prayer Dear God, Thank you for making everyone. Thank you for loving everyone. Thank you for taking care of everyone. Amen Craft - Make a mite box or container to collect funds for the Health Care for Haiti s Children project. A good instruction for making a box can be found at https://www.instructables.com/id/paperbox/. Or just cover the outside of a can, using the wrapper provided along with the curriculum. What is it? A simple paper box. What is it intended to hold? Offerings from grateful hearts. Why are the contents always of value? They are offered willingly unto the Lord. How shall we use the mite box? Keep one for your own use and fill it let it be a constant reminder of the children in Haiti who need health care. Turn it in at the end of the five-week program. Call the mite box Health Care for Haiti s Children or create a can with a Nickels wrapper (see attachment) Remember that $20 provides a nurse for a day and $100 a nurse for a week at a school. 5

Week 2 March 17 Life in Leogane Pre-K Primary curriculum Leogane is a town 18 miles west of the capital of Haiti. In 2010 a terrible earthquake shook the town and all across Haiti so that most of the buildings fell down. Many people were injured or died. 6

The people in Leogane had to live in tents for a long time until their houses could be repaired. Today, part of the town has been repaired, but the people are still are very poor. 7

Most people do not have their own cars. They ride in buses called tap-taps or motorcycles. Leogane is next to the sea and mountains, which are beautiful 8

We are learning about the people in Haiti and some of the struggles they live with in the hope that we can show them support and love. Listen to what Jesus said about how we should treat people who were hungry and hurting: Scripture Matthew 35: 25 Then the king will say to those at his right hand, Come, you that are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world; for I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me. And at Matthew 25:40 Jesus says Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me Prayer Dear God, The earth shakes and you are with us. The storms come and you are with us. You are with us when we need you. Help us be with those who need us. Amen. Remember that $20 provides a nurse for a day and $100 a nurse for a week at a school. 9

Week 3 March 24 Nurses Bring Health Care Pre-K Primary curriculum In our communities in Maryland, we have doctors and nurses to help keep us healthy and take care of us when we are sick. What s it like when you are sick? Who helps take care of you? In Haiti, there are far fewer doctors and nurses, and they are mostly in the big city, not in Leogane. This project is about providing nurses for children at schools. Many children have never seen a doctor or nurse. Our partner for this project is the Episcopal University School of Nursing in Haiti we just call them FSIL. Here is what the school looks like: The university students study for four years to become nurses: 10

The nurses who will bring health care to the children in our project graduated from FSIL after four years and studied there even longer. They also have much experience in bringing health care to people in Leogane. Their names are Yola on the left and Fabiola on the right. They will be helped by having three nursing students with them to help care for the children at the schools. Here are some of the nursing students. At the schools, the nurses will: Check the health status of each child Provide care to those who need it Teach the children good health habits such as toothbrushing. Provide information about health care to the children s families. 11

Scripture Mark 10:46-52 46 They came to Jericho. As he and his disciples and a large crowd were leaving Jericho, Bartimaeus son of Timaeus, a blind beggar, was sitting by the roadside. 47 When he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to shout out and say, Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me! 48 Many sternly ordered him to be quiet, but he cried out even more loudly, Son of David, have mercy on me! 49 Jesus stood still and said, Call him here. And they called the blind man, saying to him, Take heart; get up, he is calling you. 50 So throwing off his cloak, he sprang up and came to Jesus. 51 Then Jesus said to him, What do you want me to do for you? The blind man said to him, My teacher, [a] let me see again. 52 Jesus said to him, Go; your faith has made you well. Immediately he regained his sight and followed him on the way. Question: Why do you think Jesus cared so much about people who are sick? Prayer Dear God, Thank you for school nurses, and all of the doctors and nurses who take care of us. Thank you for caring for our minds and our bodies. Be with the nurses in Haiti. Amen. Craft Remember that $20 provides a nurse for a day and $100 a nurse for a week at a school. 12

Week 4 March 31 About the Schools Pre-K Primary curriculum Children in Haiti go to school just like we do. Schools are a good place for children to receive health care. They walk to school: How do you get to school? They wear uniforms. Do you wear a uniform to school? 13

There are three schools in the project: Abellard is a private school. The nurse Fabiola is shown with the school director. The students sang a song to greet us: Here is the song they sang to greet us. They sang it in French. You will sing it in English. Children in schools in Haiti speak Creole and French, and learn English three languages! The Service Song sung by the school children in French melody and lyrics are in the attachment It is good to provide service to others, bringing hope in times of need, Providing hope as one is able, Gifts of love and helpful deeds, And its good to thank others, when they have been good to you, Merci, merci, merci, merci, Thank you, Thank you, thanks to you. 14

Do any of you speak another language? What language would you like to learn? Ste. Croix an Episcopal school Here is the director Pere Joseph and the students And the nurses helping two students: 15

One boy had scrapes from a fall in the school yard, the other had been kicked by a horse. Ste. Rose of Lima a Catholic school has all girls Scripture 2 Esdras 14:47 For in books is the spring of understanding, the fountain of wisdom, and the river of knowledge. Question This verse reminds us how wonderful learning is! At school we learn about lots of things that make our minds strong. Nurses at our schools and in the schools in Haiti help take care of us to keep our bodies healthy so that we can be the best students we can be! Prayer Dear God, Thank you for school and teachers. Thank you for classmates and friends. Thank you for new things to learn every day. Amen. Remember that $20 provides a nurse for a day and $100 a nurse for a week at a school. 16

Week 5 April 7 When the Nurse Comes to the School Pre-K Primary Curriculum When the nurse comes to Abellard, Ste. Croix, and Ste. Rose Schools in Leogane, Haiti, she will put on band-aids on skinned knees and take temperatures when children are sick. She will give them medicine when they need it. The nurse will see if they need glasses and check their hearing. 17

The nurse will talk to their moms and dads about when to take the children to the doctor and how to keep the children healthy. They will learn about staying healthy. Everyone will be happy when the nurses come to Abellard, Ste. Croix, and Ste. Rose Schools! 18

How can I help? Support this project with your nickels, dimes, and dollars so that better health does come to their community. Here are some ideas: Discuss how you can raise money and raise awareness of the need Talk to your family about what you can do to help as a family Write an article for your church newsletter or bulletin asking for parish support Create a bulletin board or a display to raise awareness in your church Draw a picture of a school nurse in Haiti Tell a story about a child being helped by a school nurse in Haiti Ask your local health care workers (doctors and nurses) to support your fund raising Have a birthday party and ask for donations for Health Care for Haiti s Children instead of presents. Give up something for Lent and give the money saved to Health Care for Haiti s Children Put it on your Facebook page You have good ideas, what do you think you can do to support Health Care for Haiti s Children? 19

Scripture Sirach 30:15-16 Health and fitness are better than any gold, and a robust body than countless riches. There is no wealth better than health of body, and no gladness above joy of heart. Prayer Dear God, Thank you for band-aids and glasses. Thank you for thermometers and medicines. Thank you for doctors and nurses and moms and dads and all who love us. Amen. A Final Task Take a Sunday School class picture and email it to daviesh@comcast.net. We ll share it with the nurses and students in Leogane. It could be added to the Adult and Youth Curriculums too if of interest. Remember that $20 provides a nurse for a day and $100 a nurse for a week at a school. 20
