We now know it wasn t but at the time, people believed it would secure a peaceful future. The war had many causes that led to conflict. Fighting the War The outbreak of the war began in August of. Most people throughout the world weren t concerned about the fighting. Most people thought the war would be over in 6 weeks. Germany used warfare to attack any enemy ship or any ship bringing supplies to the Allies. They used their to sink many ships in the Atlantic. The United States was remaining neutral but was bring supplies to the British. The R.M.S. was on a trip from New York to London when it was by the Germans in 1915. On board the ship were many Americans who were killed in the attack. President demanded the Germans stop using submarine warfare. The Germans agreed to this demand. The United States media began using which portrayed the Germans as the big bad guy in an effort to try and convince the people America should get involved. Meanwhile, in Europe, the war rages on and majority of the fighting was done in. The trench warfare had created a massive stalemate throughout France. In an effort to try and break that stalemate, both the British and Germans began using. It was brutal to the soldiers in the trenches but overall it didn t accomplish it s goal. The only battle that was a clear victory for either side was the Battle of which was the first conflict between the and the. The won the battle. The Battle of the was fought over 125 miles. It included the use of men in the battle but in the end it was a tie. The Battle of was the longest battle of the war lasting ten months but again, ended in a tie. would get land the United States took earlier. The telegram has since become called the. The Germans then resume using warfare. In Russia, they experience the Revolution which causes the to out of the war. Since the Russians withdraw, the United States believes they have to the war. They declare war on in April of 1917. The American units that are sent to Europe are under the command of General John Pershing. The arrival of 3 million fresh American soldiers and equipment gave an immediate to the allies. In November 1917, Italy signed a peace treaty exiting the war. The war wasn t the only devastating event happening throughout the world. The pandemic was wreaking havoc on the world s population. It killed between and million people which is more than the war and more than the Black Plague did. By 1918, the Central were running out of supplies. They launched one last attack which is called the Second Battle of the. The Allies were able to push the Germans back. By this time both sides had enough of the fighting. There were in both the French and German armies, people were around the globe, and the Central powers knew they couldn t win now that the had entered the war. So, the Central Powers agreed to a peace treaty in 1918 called the Treaty of. The Big Four which included, President of the United States, Vittorio Orlando of Italy, David Lloyd of England and George of France met to discuss the terms of the treaty. Wilson and George wanted to move on into a new peaceful world but wanted. President Wilson creates his plan for peace called the and Germany believed it would be the terms of the Treaty. It wasn t. The Treaty of called for Germany to immediately it s military in the Rhineland and reduce it s overall force as well. They couldn t have any, or planes. They had to pay $ billion dollars in war reparations and they had to admit to responsibility for starting the war. It gave - back to France. Germany had to give up all it;s colonies everywhere. It created the League of which was utterly useless. The Treaty was signed in a railroad car that would become famous at the beginning of World War II. The war led to the overthrow of in Russia, Austria-Hungary, and Germany. It contributed to the Revolution in Russia and it crippled the German. Great Britain ran up a huge to the United States and France was in. The war killed a total of million people which combined with the totaled about 50 to 60 million people total during the time

period. At home in the United States, it helped get the Amendment passed which gave the right to vote.
