S e n i o r R e g e n t M o o s e o n a M i s s i o n - M a y 1, 2 0 1 8 - A p r i l 3 0, 2 0 1 9 Hello Co-Workers: I represented WOTM Chapter 1367 at the Mid Year Conference and Friendship Conferral in Norfolk, VA in January. The opening on Friday was not as impressive as the opening in Roanoke back in August with both Lodge members and WOTM in a joint session; the set up of colors, flags and banners. It was just the 63 WOTM Chapters in attendance. We had 10 Winchester Chapter Members who attended. The speeches were on Community Service Project or Homeless Vets, Moose Charities by our own Lisa Kelly, Membership, Youth Awareness, Mooseheart & Moosehaven, Activities & Sports for Special Olympic Softball Tournament, VCU Massey Cancer Center and upcoming election process for Chapters. That is right.it is time for upcoming 2019-2020 elections for new Officer positions for Chapter 1367. There were 4 Task Force Men from Safe Surfin Foundation who spoke on Child Pornography and Special Trafficking of young people from infants to young adults. The numbers reported were astronomical. This was very emotional and sad; but so true with the media that is exposed today. We did not win any awards for our Chapter, but our very own Ruby Markley was presented the Virginia Co-Worker Lifetime Achievement award for her 54 years of Moose service to following in the footsteps of Virginia Vance who received this award last year. That is two years in a row for Winchester. The addresses were pretty much the same in stressing RESPECT and CRITICISM of co-workers. All of the speeches stressed THINK...THINK...THINK before you speak. Again Membership was a topic on how we welcome our new members. Have they heard about our GOSSIP, DRAMA and LODGE APPEARANCE? We need to show good character and privacy of our new members and existing co-workers; giving a welcoming impression. Our Official Visitor, Kimberly Petitt who was the Jr. Past Grand Regent kept us on our toes and laughing for the entire weekend with her wit and personal stories. Also the monies raised (over Thirteen Thousand) for all the charities at the Conference was overwhelming. I helped with the Basket Raffle for Moose Charities. We had 47 beautiful and tempting baskets donated by the Chapters. $6,095.00 was raised for the Centennial Fund at Moosehaven. What a way to end the weekend. This will be my last newsletter article as your Senior Regent. I want to Thank each of you for your help in obtaining this experience with our Chapter. It is team work that counts for the organization. So, remember Think-Think-Think before you speak. Remember the importance of who and what you represent, to our beloved Mooseheart and Moosehaven. Fraternally, Sherry Chapman, Sr. Regent Congratulations Ruby Markley on receiving the Virginia Life Time Achievement Award Serving Winchester Chapter in many ways since May 14, 1964 2 Page 2 of 6 Downloaded from www.virginiamoose.org Posted: 3/12/2019

MARCH MEMBERSHIP/RETENTION COMMITTEE ACTIVITY NIGHT The Membership/Retention Committee Activity Night will be held on March 14, 2019, at 7:00 p.m. Chairman Bonnie Sine has held a fund raiser and from those proceeds, the Committee will be making a $100.00 donation to the assigned special project which is capturing the childhood of our Mooseheart children on film. Our children love pictures, pictures, pictures. The Committee will also donate $25 to the Scholarship and Maintenance fund. For our community service project, the Committee will be sending a check in the amount of $100.00 to the Winchester Day Nursery. Program for the evening is our popular Lefty/Righty Game which is a lot of fun and lucky winners will receive gifts. Following the game, refreshments consisting of barbecue, coleslaw, baked beans and chips and dip will be served. APRIL HIGHER DEGREES-ACADEMY OF FRIENDSHIP COMMITTEE ACTIVITY NIGHT The Higher Degrees Academy of Friendship Committee Night Open Meeting will be held on April 11 at 7:00 p.m. with Higher Degree Chairman Mary Wilkins in charge of the program. From the proceeds of the Committee s fundraisers, they will be making a $50.00 donation to help our new Mooseheart residents get the right start. Each year at Mooseheart approximately 50 new children are welcomed to the Mooseheart community. Many of these children arrive with a few changes of clothing and little else. Purchasing new clothing, coats, shoes, personal hygiene items, personal bedding and a few photo frames for pictures of their family help each child get a sense of belonging at Mooseheart. Also, the Committee will be donating $25.00 to the Scholarship and Maintenance fund and a donation to community service. Refreshments will be served following the meeting. MEMBERSHIP = GROWTH & RETENTION PLEASE, WE NEED YOUR HELP. We are now in the final two months of our Chapter year and as always, your help is needed for the Chapter to obtain the Award of Achievement which an increase in membership is the main requirement. If you have a family member, co-worker, or friend who would benefit from membership in the Chapter, please ask them to join now. If you have sponsored a member who is now in arrears, please approach her to see if she will pay her dues before April 30. Reminder: A member whose dues are expired cannot be signed into the Moose until after one year from the expiration date. The hard working Officers and Chairmen would be very grateful for your assistance in obtaining the Award of Achievement. It s election time and the Chapter is taking Nominations for the following offices for 2019-2020 Senior Regent Junior Regent Secretary/Treasurer and Recorder If you are interested in getting involved, just let any Chapter Officer know! In Memory of our Deceased Chapter Coworkers Eunice H Hensley - January 31, 2019 Elizabeth Tomlin January 31, 2019 Linda J Johnson - February 3, 2019 3 Happy Birthday to all our LOOM and WOTM Members for March and April 2019! Youth Awareness News By Myssi Stange, WOTM Youth Awareness Coordinator It was amazing to announce that Virginia had 92 high school students attend regional information sessions this year. Thanks again to the amazing efforts of the chapter, lodge, and district youth awareness chairmen in promoting the VMA scholarship program. The in-school program lead by Kay Morrison has proven to be a positive pathway to more students. I would like to thank the co-workers who attended the conference in Norfolk for their donations, they raised over $800 for the program through afghan raffle tickets and purchase of Youth Awareness items. This almost covers a full student scholarship. Let s try for $1,000 in August. Moose International has notified the Virginia Moose Association (VMA) that this year the state may send 10 delegates to the International Congress in Philadelphia, PA the end of April. That means the VMA will be paying out $10,000 in scholarships. The student s expenses for attending the International Congress is covered by the Moose Legion. The sponsoring lodge/chapter of the 10 scholarship winners, will be asked to provide each of their students $100 of fun money also. Winchester Chapter has sponsored 4 students. Keep your fingers crossed that all 4 sponsored students complete their requirements and turn in their books to a VMA chairman/coordinator by Feb. 28, 2019. In March, Kay Morrison and Manny Propst will review the material received by Feb. 28 to ensure the students have followed the guidelines and to select the project books to move forward. Those books will be taken to Fort Defiance High School for final judging. The 10 delegates will be selected by their peers, names of submitting student and high school they attend is not seen by judging students. All students who submit by Feb. 28 will also have their name entered into a drawing for a $500 and $300 cash prize. There will be more changes coming to the VMA Youth Awareness program for next year. There will be more opportunities for students to win prizes and three ways to submit a project book and reports. Look for more details on the programs website: vmayouthawareness.org and in a future newsletter. Chapters, Lodges, Districts, and Schools are starting to request dates for program information sessions now. If you know a school that would like a lunch or afterschool session, please coordinate with Kay Morrison. Everyone else should schedule with Manny or me. If you have a computer or can watch YouTube on your mobile device or at the library, check out the programs new video at: https://youtu.be/o_zau4ug1jk You will hear firsthand how the program is helping the Virginia youth. Start scouting those high schools students! Best, Myssi MOOSEHEART/MOOSEHAVEN CARD/GAME PARTY The Mooseheart/Moosehaven Committee will hold a Card/Game Party on April 12, 2019, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Lunch will be served at 12:00; cost is $15.00. Following lunch, door prizes will be given out. Reservations must be made by April 5; contact Margie at 540-662-0198 or Janice at 540-667-4376. Get your group together to play your favorite game and join us for a day of fun and friendship. Virginia Moose Charities Chairman Lisa Kelly Do you go to the grocery store? Buy Gas? Clothes? Tools? Books? Eat at Restaurants? 1. KEEP THE RECEIPT 2. Download the free app 3. Make Mooseheart your school. 4.Take a picture of your receipt. You just made a donation without giving a penny. 4 Page 4 of 6 Downloaded from www.virginiamoose.org Posted: 3/12/2019
