VOLUME XI, IS S UE I P I KA PPA CHAPTE R NEW S PAGE 4 Pi Kappa Service News Flo s Joe Flo s Joe has become an annual December finals-week tradition at Allen College. Pi Kappa coordinates a snack and beverage bar for Allen College students in all programs to facilitate their success on end-of-semester exams. Allen College faculty and associates contribute food for Flo s Joe, named in honor of Florence Nightingale, who was involved in opening coffee house-reading rooms for workers who were on their way home from their shifts in the 1880s. Nightingale provided the workers with coffee and free reading materials. Members of Pi Kappa started the Flo s Joe tradition in December of 2010. Service Honors This fall Pi Kappa made a donation to the Allen College Service Honors Program to assist in a community project honoring and thanking area fire crews. The students participated in this community outreach by baking and decorating cookies and delivering them to area fire stations with thank you letters. Pi Kappa thanks its Board members for coordinating this annual event in service to Allen College students. Thanks are also due to Allen College faculty, associates, and Pi Kappa members for supplying beverages and treats for Flo s Joe. Blanket Making On September 27, Pi Kappa and ASNA members worked together to make fleece blankets that were later donated to the Salvation Army. The purpose of the blanket making was to supply the Salvation Army with blankets for distribution to community members in need. A total of 12 blankets were made for donation.
