SCOUTING MICHIGAN STATE The Spartans are ranked No. 8 nationally and No. 8 in the Big Ten Conference. Nationally, Michigan State is ranked ninth on uneven bars (48.900), 1th on floor (48.900), 33rd on beam (47.575), and 35th on vault (47.975). The Spartans are 0-1 after falling, 194.000-193.350, in their season opener at Bowling Green on Jan. 5. Michigan State returns ten letterwinners, including Preseason Gymnast to Watch Gabriella Douglas, and welcomes five newcomers. The Spartans are led by head coach Mike Rowe, who is in his first season. LAST TIME OUT Iowa finished fourth (193.000) at the Arizona Quad Meet against No. 14 Auburn, Iowa State, and Arizona State on Jan. 6. Sophomore Clair Kaji took home the title on floor with 9.850. Sophomore Charlotte Sullivan finished second in the all-around with a 39.075. Overall, the team had six top-five finishes. Snyder competed in every meet during the 017 season and recorded Iowa s individual season best on floor (9.950). She put her name in the history books when she tied the third highest floor score (9.950) in Iowa history against Iowa State on March 4, 017. The senior earned second team All-Big Ten honors during the 017 regular season and went on to garner all-championship team recognition at the Big Ten Championships. Outside of the gym, Snyder received Academic All-Big Ten honors for the second consecutive year. Kaji competed in every meet during the 017 season and shared Iowa s individual season best on beam (9.950). The sophomore tied the second highest beam score (9.950) and 10th highest floor score (9.95) in Iowa history. Kaji earned Big Ten Freshman of the Week accolades twice (Jan. 3 and March 6) and was selected to the All-Big Ten second team. She tied for first on beam (9.950) at the NCAA Champaign Regionals and advanced to the NCAA Championships as an event specialist on beam. HAWKEYE NEWCOMERS The GymHawks return 14 letterwinners and welcome five new additions -- Erin Castle, Emma Hartzler, Madison Kampschroeder, Annabelle Mosier, and Ashley Smith -- to the 018 squad. Castle is from Boone, Iowa, and trained at Iowa Triad Gymnastics. She finished her high school career as the bars champion and third in the all-around at stat. She also finished sixth in the allaround at regional competition. Hartzler comes from Marion, Iowa, and trained at the Iowa Gymnastics Academy. During her senior year, she was the all-around champion at state, runner-up on bars and third on vault at regional competition, and was the bars champions at the 017 Nationals. Kampschroeder -- a native of Overland Park, Kansas -- trained at Fuzion Gymnastics. She finished her high school career as the state champion on beam and finishing fourth on beam and fifth on bars at regionals. Mosier comes from Longmont, Colorado, where she trained at Airborne Gymnastics and Dance. During the 016 season, Mosier finished runner-up on floor and bars at state competition and came in second on bars again at regionals. Smith -- a native of Jacksonville, Florida -- rounds out the newcomers. She trained at TNT Gymnastics. The freshman finished her high school career by placing third on bars at state, runner-up on vault at regional competition, and qualifying for the 017 JO National Championships. A LOOK BACK Head Coach Larissa Libby was named Big Ten Coach of the Year after leading Iowa to a No. 18 national rankings, an overall record of 5-11, and a conference mark of 13-5. The Hawkeyes wrapped up their season at the NCAA Champaign Regional with a team score of 196.050 and a third place finish. The GymHawks set a new school record on beam with a score of 49.600. Clair Kaji and Angel Metcalf shared the title of regional beam champion with career-highs of 9.950. The pair advanced to the NCAA Championships, with Metcalf in the all-around and Kaji as a beam specialist. At the Big Ten Championships, the GymHawks finished third with a team score of 196.75, marking Iowa s highest championship score in Big Ten history. Mollie Drenth was named Big Ten beam champion with a score of 9.95. Drenth, Metcalf, and Lanie Snyder were also honored to the All- Championship Team. A record five GymHawks were named All-Big Ten during the regular season. Drenth and Metcalf garnered first team honors, while Kaji, Snyder, and Melissa Zurawski received second team honors. Zurawski was also named Big Ten Gymnast of the Week on Jan. 3, and both Kaji and Charlotte Sullivan earned Big Ten Freshman of the Week honors twice throughout the season. Outside the gym, nine GymHawks were named to the All-Big Ten Academic Team -- the most gymnasts to receive this honor since 010. UP NEXT The GymHawks open the home slate against Ohio State on Jan. 19 at 7 p.m. at Carver-Hawkeye Arena. The GymHawks will have four different special edition posters, with one edition available at each home meet throughout the season. The first 500 fans at each home meet will receive a poster, so fans are encouraged to come early to all home meets to collect the entire series. Parking is FREE for the home meet against Ohio State. Fans are encouraged to park in Lot 46, the parking lot connected to Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
