We kick off October with Homecoming, a great celebration as part of the long-standing tradition of excellence at South High School. In addition, several important and exciting things are occurring with our students, as they re in full-swing with this school year. First of all, congratulations to Aravind Kalathil and Katie Whitmore for being named as a National Merit Semifinalists, and to Emma Hixon and Akshat Nadella for being named as National Merit Commended Students! These honors are based upon scores from the PSAT (Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test) and place these Bulldog students among the top high school scholars in the United States! Great work! October marks a time each year in which we engage in some standardized testing of our students. The PSAT is given at FZS during this month (October 10 th ) to interested juniors, although sophomores and freshmen may elect to take the test if they wish to do so. Scores from this test (for junior students) determine which of next year s seniors receive National Merit recognition. Sophomores will be taking an ACT exam on Thursday, October 18 th. This exam is something the District is doing in conjunction with Princeton Review and will involve a retired (used in a previous year) ACT exam. In addition, FZS offers an ACT Test Preparation Course designed to familiarize students with the ACT. This course, offered during the evening once every week for the five weeks prior to an ACT exam date (once in the fall and once in the spring), has proven itself to be very beneficial for our students. For more information about any of our testing or test preparation programs, please visit with your son s or daughter s counselor at FZS. Finally, our Leadership Class has teamed with the City of O Fallon in Operation O Town Creek Clean! Check out this video to see the work these students are doing https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=evko8_tnk0s Impressive results regarding student achievement and exciting co-curricular activities at FZS all reflect on the outstanding things happening for students so far during this school year. Your involvement in and support of this excitement are tremendous parts of the success that is a trademark of South High School. I m excited about seeing you at our events and activities and look forward to the accomplishments the remainder of this semester will bring. Sincerely, Kevin Keltner, Ed. D. Principal
FROM OUR ASSISTANT PRINCIPALS CLASS OF 2019 With October we say goodbye to summer and hello to second quarter. Officially first quarter ends on October 12. All the more reason to make sure these final few days count. There are a few items of interest I wanted to bring to your attention. Parents, our next Grad Night meeting will take place Tuesday, October 30 at 6:30 p.m. in the SHS library. This week marks the beginning of homecoming week. Among the many activities planned for this event, on Friday, October 5, seniors will be taking their class panoramic photo. It is very important all seniors are present on this date. The photo will take place at 9:45 a.m. Students should be dressed in their jerseys, uniforms, or senior t-shirts. Lastly, on October 8 and 9 picture retakes for seniors will take place after school in room 256. Seniors, if you forgot to get your picture taken for the yearbook or would like to have senior pictures taken again, you may do so at this time. Walk-ins are welcome; however, the photography company (Lifetouch) would prefer you make an appointment in advance by calling 314-739-1515. Best wishes to all of our extra curriculars as many of our teams are headed toward District competition. With any luck this time next month I will have some positive news regarding this year s Homecoming spirit stick. Mr. Joe Serles Assistant Principal CLASS OF 2021 The year is already going by very quickly. We are a month in a half in, but more importantly, we are just one week away from the end of 1 st quarter. The quarter ends on Friday, October 12. As you all know, first quarter grades are important because they will average with second quarter for the semester grade in each course. If you start off on the wrong foot first quarter, it will make second quarter far more difficult! I encourage all students and parents to keep in close contact with teachers, especially if there is an academic concern. This can be done through the Parent Portal, email, and phone calls. Our teachers want to see all the students at South High succeed! On another note, I continue to be impressed with the behavior of the class of 2021! We have had very few discipline issues. I do encourage you all to watch your tardies. Second quarter is when they start to really add up. Also, many of you have already used your cell phone warning. Remember, only have it out if you have permission while in class. I can t wait to see you all at Homecoming on October 6, and let s show the other classes our school spirit during Homecoming Week! Dr. Angie Hahn Assistant Principal CLASS OF 2020 Greetings class of 2020!! We are another month closer to second semester time seems to be flying by! The fall sports season is in full swing and Homecoming is here, which means the end of first quarter is near! It is now more important than ever to be keeping up with your homework and watching your grades, for your future depends upon it! If any of you find yourselves struggling in any of your classes, help is available through A+ tutoring each day after school. The tutors are always there and ready to help! This is a wonderful, free service, so take advantage of it! On October 18, the entire sophomore class will be taking a practice ACT here at school. You will be receiving more information in the coming days, so be watching for that! Enjoy the cooler weather, take in some Bulldog activities and be sure to keep those grades up! Make it a great October! Mrs. Stephanie Goellner Assistant Principal CLASS OF 2022 I can't believe it's already October! We are just a few days from the end of first quarter. The quarter ends on Friday, October 12. First quarter grades are important because they will average with second quarter for the semester grade in each course. GPA and credit is awarded on semester grades. We have A+ tutoring Monday - Friday after school in room 117 from 2:30-3:30 and on early release Wednesdays in the library until 2:30. Students do not have to sign up in advance for this service. I encourage you to take advantage of this help if you need it! I hope that you are enjoying your freshman year. I am so proud of all your hard work during your first two months in high school. Keep it up! Stop by my office and visit with me if you ever need anything. Dr.Ticia Garbarini Assistant Principal
