All for one and o DEPARTMENT one for all ; OF GEORGIA AUXILIARY NEWS American Legion Auxiliary, Department of Georgia, 3035 Mt Zion Rd, Stockbridge, GA 30281 www.galegionaux.org amlegaux@bellsouth.net 678-289-8446 A Word from the President By Gabriele Barnett, Department This month we are celebrating Memorial Day. how many of you know the history of Memorial Day? Memorial Day is a federal holiday in the United States for remembering the people who died while serving in the country's armed forces. The holiday, which is observed every year on the last Monday of May, was formerly known as Decoration Day and originated after the American Civil War to commemorate the Union and Confederate soldiers who died in the war. By the 20th century, Memorial Day had been extended to honor all Americans who died while in the military service. Many of us will be at cemeteries putting flags on veterans graves or participating in Memorial Day services, honoring our veterans. Some of us will be attending the Poppy Anchor ceremony in Tybee Island on Monday, 25 May 15. We will be taking the beautiful poppy anchor out to sea to honor the ones who lost their lives at Sea. If you would like to participate, make sure you are at the dock at 9:00am, the boat will leave at 10:00am. The boat dock is located at Lazaretto Creek Marina at 1 Old US Hwy 80, Tybee Island, GA 31328. Whatever you have planned for this weekend, please be safe and think about our veterans. It is almost time for the Department Convention. Soon there will be a resolution send out that will be presented to the body for vote. Look at the proposal and discuss it with your Unit members. When voting, we should vote in the best interest of the American Legion Auxiliary not for personal gain and certainly not because something has been done a certain way for so long. Sometimes change is necessary for an organization to be more effective. The Junior Convention will be held at Post 192 in Evans. Registration is on Saturday, 30 May 15 from 1pm to 2pm. Afterwards the committee has activities planned for the Juniors. After dinner, we will have a disco party for the girls until 9pm. If you need hotel reservations contact the America s Best Inn, 461 Park W Dr, Grovetown, GA 30813, Phone:(706) 855-9111, the Legion rate is app $56.00. On Sunday 31 May, 15 we meet at the Post for breakfast, a short memorial service, and installation of newly elected Honorary Junior Officers. I hope to see many of the Juniors there. INSIDE THIS ISSUE Auxiliary May News 2015 From President Gabriele Barnett 1 Secretary 2 1 st Vice President /Leadership 2 2nd Vice President / Membership 3 Historian 3 Chaplain 3 Note from Dept. President Yankee Candle 4 Poppy Anchor 5 Calendar of Events 6 Inserts: Membership Report, PPP Luncheon form, and Dept Convention info. Last month I was in Baltimore and had the honor to participate in Operation Welcome Home Maryland at the airport. The volunteers of this organization greet Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, Marines and Coast Guard service members returning from overseas. They average about four welcome home events per week. The volunteers decorate the lobby with patriotic signs and banners. They also package goodie bags for the troops. When the troops arrive through the doors of the International Arrival terminal, they are showered with praise, cheering, hugging offering them a goodie bag, and thanking them for their service. What a heartwarming event. Don t forget to thank a veteran for their service because It is the Veteran, not the preacher, who has given us freedom of religion. It is the Veteran, not the reporter, who has given us freedom of the press. It is the Veteran, not the poet, who has given us freedom of speech. It is the Veteran, not the campus organizer, who has given us freedom to assemble. It is the Veteran, not the lawyer, who has given us the right to a fair trial. It is the Veteran, not the politician, who has given us the right to vote. It is the Veteran, who salutes the Flag; it is the Veteran, who serves under the Flag, to be buried by the flag, so the protester can burn the flag. Author: Anonymous I wish each and every one of you a great Memorial Day weekend. May you reflect on the meaning of the holiday by remembering a veteran. For God and Country Volume 5, Issue 11

Page 2 Secretary By Patty Hawkins, Department Secretary Time to get ready for the Department Convention and the National Convention. Forms for hotels are on the website as well as in the newsletter. Don t wait until the last day to get your rooms, as they sometimes get filled up real quick. Delinquent Notices went out April 13 th! They were mailed to the Unit Presidents. We will NOT be collecting any monies at the Department Convention in Dalton for Obligations. They must be paid and into the department 15 days prior to Convention.. The deadline to be received into the Department Headquarters is June 11, 2015. This is very important, our Convention will be here before you know it and in order to vote the Obligation must be paid. Remember we voted NOT TO ACCEPT any payments for Obligations at the Convention. If you are planning on coming to the Department Convention and are not sure if your Unit s Obligations have been paid check with your Unit President or Treasurer. NO EXCEPTION!!! Our Membership goal is at 80%. Ladies we are not that far away from 100%, so let s see that extra effort I know you are willing to help get us there. We do really need to concentrate on our juniors. Bring them in and let them help us build up our units. You might be surprised what our youth are capable of and their willingness to help if only asked. Membership has slowed down. I know there has to be members that have not been contacted about their dues. Why not get a group together and call those members, let them know you miss them and that their membership means a lot. It is for our Veterans that we Honor. It is better to have too many than not enough Have you made you reservation for the Department Convention held in June? Have you pre-registered to save time and money? How about the Banquet? And don t forget about our Past Department Parley Luncheon? DON T FORGET THE JUNIOR CONVENTION May 30th- May 31, 2015 look for the form on the website. 1 st Vice President / Leadership By Rosa Scott, Department 1 st Vice President My how time flies when you re having fun! The 2014-2015 year as your Leadership Chairperson is coming to an end. I hope that during this time each of you that have attended a workshop or read an article in the newsletter have gained something that will continue to help you in your growth as leaders for our beloved organization. Learning is a never ending part of the growth and development for The American Legion Auxiliary. As Learning is a never ending part of the growth and development for The American Legion Auxiliary. As new information is received, passing it on to all the entities of our organization will be vital. Continued growth can only be accomplished by encouraging everyone to take an active part in Leadership Training. When you make the decision to move within your Unit, District or Department or when you mentor an individual your leadership skills will need to be sharp. It s important to arm ourselves with the most current information available. Our organization strives to have this information available to you in various formats. As we continue to move forward toward our greatest potential, your role will be to reach out and let us know where and what is your interest. We re not leaving our progress to chance, by tossing it up in the air and hoping it lands in the right place. We strive to reach out to those who have the passion and drive to make the Department of Georgia the best! I encourage and welcome all of you to reach out to me! I am more than happy to assist in any way that I can. As the Leading Candidate for President for the Department of Georgia, I am looking forward to the Convention in Dalton, GA. Don t forget my e-mail is rosa.scott49@yahoo.com. Hope to see you there! The world is full of nice people. If you can t find one, BE ONE.

Page 3 2 nd Vice President/Membership By Miriam Stein, Department 2 nd Vice President Ladies, the time is running out for 2015 membership. Please put all your attention on membership. Reports are over and done so you can spend your extra time on membership. It is very important that we get as many as we can into Department. I know that everyone has done the best job they could BUT we can try with one more BIG PUSH. Just remember that when you do a good job it pays off. I am very proud of all the Units that have made goal. It has been a year that I won t forget. The Units/Members have really worked hard on membership. I really appreciate everyone's hard work. For God and Country! Historian By Anitia Owens, Department Historian It is hard to believe that we are wrapping up another successful year with our Units, Districts and the Department. It has been a very challenging year and I am so proud of all of you for your accomplishments. You have by this time completed your History Report and History Books and I want to thank each of you who submitted a report and book. I do realize the amount of work and effort that goes into each book and the questions and frustrations that you endured in preparing this book from all the phone calls and emails that I received. I will be bringing some of those to the attention of the National Historian during their workshop at the National Convention. Always keep in mind that the ultimate goal of this book is to be a history to those who come behind us that they may learn what we did and who we were during that year. As we enjoy reading about our past United States Presidents and their families our future members will enjoy reading about us even if we do not received an award you should have satisfaction of a job well done. Chaplain By Jane Lawrence, Department Chaplain Thanks so much to all the Unit Chaplains that have sent in your reports. I am hoping to see a lot of prayer books this year. If you have questions on how to prepare the Prayer Book, you can go on line and find the rules. We had a great Poppy Anchor program at Spring Conference, and the anchor is beautiful. Also, a lot of good information was presented at the Auxiliary Legion College. Thanks to all members who have sent prayers for President Gabriele Prayer Book. Chaplains keep up the good work. We have had a busy year with get well and sympathy cards. Thanks so much to those of you who have kept me informed. I hope everyone had a happy and blessed Mother's Day. Please remember to keep our Veterans and their families in your prayers. A quote from Eleanor Roosevelt "Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery and today is a gift, that's why they call it the present." For God and Country The world is full of nice people. If you can t find one, BE ONE. Again I thank you the members who make this organization so great. For God and Country
