Purpose of the Position To provide professional nursing leadership and support for staff working in the inpatient area. This role ensures effective day to day co-ordination and management across the inpatient setting, working collaboratively with the operating theatre, acute services and daystay teams as well as the wider hospital services. This position has line management responsibility for the nursing and healthcare assistants and for leading and developing the ward team to exhibit best practice standards and quality focused patient centred care. The role is responsible for: Providing expert clinical leadership and co-ordination of resources for the safe, effective and efficient functioning of the service. The provision of excellence in financial, administrative, clinical and operational management Leading the implementation and monitoring of strategic and operational plans Leading the team by providing expert senior nursing advice and support Role modelling excellence in service provision for all customers internal and external To develop, implement and evaluate relevant clinically focused education systems and resources to maintain and nurture staff skills, knowledge and competencies relevant to the area of practice. Staff Management Responsibility for staff professional/work education and development Communicates effectively with the inpatient team and the wider hospital. There is evidence of a robust communication system which is informative, factual and timely Lead the processes of performance review and management including preparation and implementation of annual appraisals for all staff and compliance with all Braemar Hospital annual update and certification policies. Work with the senior nursing team and identify deficits in clinical and professional competencies of individuals and services and take appropriate action. Work with the Clinical Nurse Educator on ensuring PDRP compliance and education planning for staff. Provide direct and/or indirect clinical support for New Graduate Registered Nurses and student nurses. Provide direct and/or indirect clinical support and facilitate the orientation process of all new staff Work collaboratively with the Patient Services Manger to address performance issues including the identification of objectives and strategies for evaluating and monitoring performance. Share information on scholarships/awards/education funding and assist nurses to prepare and submit applications. Provide formal and informal education to staff within the clinical area and lead the process of reflective practice. Ensures staff have an opportunity to contribute to team/service meetings and discussions Promote cost effective delivery of services by reducing waste and through facilitating effective and efficient use of resources. Actively contribute to the formation and review of documents, guidelines, policies and procedures. Participate in service workforce and development planning Develop workforce plan outlining New graduates, RN,EN and students Provide support and teaching to Registered Nurses to develop their supervision and delegation skills. Lead the recruitment and selection process. Manage staff budget and supplies within agreed budget. Identify and implement a succession plan for the Charge Nurse role. Work to identify current and future staffing resource requirements and develop strategies to address these. Page 4 of 9

Financial and Resource Management Ensures the effective and efficient use of resources and supplies within the department Identifies opportunities to improve the use of resources Monitors effectiveness of changes in care delivery Resource planning and utilization Demonstrates excellent understanding of financial and resource management and provides accurate reports as requested A 5 year forecast for equipment replacement is updated and presented annually to the PSM. There is evidence of a recruitment/vacancy management plan which considers skill mix, nursing intervention hours and available budget in line with the overarching workforce plan. Demonstrates extensive knowledge of and compliance with the CEA requirements including provision of rosters, management of sick and annual leave in line with service requirements. Contributes to the formation of the inpatient services annual work programme; implements the relevant components of the plan within own department in line with service and organisational need including certification/accreditation. There is evidence that all documentation systems to capture patient charges are accurate, current and systematically reviewed. Ensure that costs are effectively managed through reporting on monthly variances, maintaining control of ordering and checking and authorising payment of invoices Page 5 of 9

Quality and Risk Management To actively contribute to risk minimisation activities within the service Lead the department to proactively reduce the number of accidents/incidents Contribute to the identification of specifications, trials and purchase of new equipment. Contribute to the identification of possible research/quality projects and participate in the development, implementation and evaluations of proposals. Monitor national and international trends and use this as a basis for educational and operational planning. Provide support and supervision for staff carrying out research projects and ongoing education. Work collaboratively with Occupational Health and Safety, Quality and Risk and Infection Control teams, to maintain standards. Relevant quality and risk annual plans are available and understood by team members and reviewed and updated annually Review and implement systems to ensure that processes to establish monitor and review the service specific standards of practice and indicators of clinical practice for nursing are established and maintained.
