ISBN: 9781433805615 COURSE DESCRIPTION: Course Objectives: Theories of leadership and organizational behavior as they apply to the health care arena are explored. A personal philosophy of nursing leadership applicable to a wide variety of roles will be identified. It focuses on implementation of strategies for change while analyzing the probable consequences of alternative plans and actions. Major content includes (but is not limited to) preparing the environment for change, professional and organizational communications, policy development, contracting, negotiating, and delegating. Prerequisite: Student must have graduated with a BSN and be admitted to the MSN program. Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to: 1. Analyze the theory and concepts of nursing administration. 2. Research the role of nurse administrator 3. Classify theories of leadership and management development. 4. Research change theory and strategies in the health care 5. Evaluate the process of developing a personal philosophy of leadership applicable to a wide variety of roles within the health care system. 2
6. Critique the process of policy development and the potential impact on organizational behaviors. 7. Research and develop the plans for changing organizational communications; policy development, contracting, negotiating and delegating within the administrative framework Student Learner Outcomes: The following course outcomes apply to successful achievement of this course. The student must be able to demonstrate the ability to: 1. Articulate knowledge of nursing administration theories and concepts within a health care system. 2. Utilize research of the nurse administrator s role to develop a personal philosophy of leadership 3. Discussion of change theory and strategies in class. 4. Analyze the role of Executive nurse and their abilities in policy development within the health care system. 5. Write a APA style research paper regarding administrative theories and preparing the health care environment for change within the healthcare system. 6. Demonstrate through verbalization & presentations utilizing administrative theory how to function in the role of a nursing administrator with strategic change as the driving force within a health care system. Discussion Board - Students will reflect, analyze and synthesize the topics offered on discussion board and post 5 researched peer reviewed articles. They will also present their managerial research paper on the discussion board for comments and discussion with colleagues. 2. The student will be researching online articles on historical and theoretical evolution of the administrative health care nursing roles. You will then write a reflection on the article and be prepared to discuss the article and the reflection on discussion board. 3. Criteria for Reflection Articles will include the following (critiques will cover 5 research articles). Historical evolution of theory and science development within the administrative nursing roles. A. Stages and milestones B. Historical trends in approaches to administrative theory development. A. Toward the development of the discipline of nursing Theoretical growth: revolution, evolution or integration of Administrative theory B. Epistemological and ontological issues From logical empiricism to historicism Philosophical influences on nursing theory and their impact on nursing administration Concept Analysis Criteria and Paper: The student will write a 20-page paper in APA format with abstract, reference pages. You will select a concept and follow it through. It will be based on concept analysis as follows: 4
I. Identification and application of administrative theory used in policy development. How it affects policy and the health care institution. Who needs it? What is it? Why do nurse administrators need to understand it? What impact does it have from a practice and research prospective in relationship to administrative roles? II. Concept Analysis A. Strategies for concept development focusing on administrative nursing roles and policy development. Exploration Clarification Analysis B. Reflective Analysis. Discuss & describe change situations. Analyze impact of administrative theory on policy. Reflect on outcomes and what might have been changed. III. Describing concepts common to administrative theory. A. Theory domains which attribute to administrative theory B. Paradigms and meta-paradigms of theory Theory Development & Organizational Behaviors and Policy Paper: The student will select a nursing theorist /theories & related theories of their choice and write a 15 page paper which includes cover page, abstract, and references. They will present this on discussion board with peer participation and refutation of the theorists concepts. This presentation will include the following: I. Process of theory development in nursing A. Strategies for theory development within the administrative role 1. Theory-practice-research linkages 2. An integrated approach to theory development 3. Tools for concept and theory development B. Theory construction in nursing administration 1. The theoretical foundations of nursing administration 2. Propositions and the process of induction and looking at deduction 3. Differentiation of conceptual models and theories 4. Construction of practice theory for administrative practice 5

Participation Policy: (a) Students are to be prepared with addressing the discussion board topics. This preparedness will include an analysis and synthesis of the topics presented and scholarly inquiry aimed at addressing each area of the discussion.
