Last season, Penn State defeated the Gophers in a dual meet, 195.475-195.150, but Minnesota finished third at the Big Ten Championships with a 195.950, while the Nittany Lions were sixth (195.700). 2.0 - The Gophers are ranked 11th in this week s GymInfo Top 25 Rankings after opening the season on Saturday with a 195.550-193.500 victory at home against then-no. 17 Washington. 3.0 - Minnesota has a wealth of experience, as 22 of the team s 24 routines from 2012 are returning for 2013. Among the top returners are juniors Kayla Slechta, a two-time NCAA Championships qualifier, and Dusti Russell, who earned a trip to Nationals last season. 4.0 - Slechta just missed a perfect score on vault against Washington, with a 9.950 to win the event. She also tied for first on floor with a 9.875 and tied for third on bars with a 9.725 to earn Big Ten Event Specialist of the Week honors. It s the third time in Slechta s career that she s received a weekly honor from the Big Ten. 5.0 - Slechta s 9.950 vault score is her career-best, and it s tied for third in program history. Carolyn Yernberg and Courtney Norman each recorded perfect 10.0 s on the same day at UCLA on March 3, 2002, while Yernberg also scored a 9.950 at Arizona State on March 12, 2004. 6.0 - Senior Janell Campbell is Minnesota s team captain. Campbell is coming off a junior season in which she recorded career-highs on both bars (9.875) and floor (9.900). She opened her senior campaign by tying for first on both bars (9.825) and floor (9.875) against Washington. 7.0 - Minnesota s team total of 195.550 was its highest-ever score in a season-opening meet. The previous high had been 195.525 in a loss to Arizona on Jan. 11, 2003. 8.0 - The Gophers almost equaled their 2012 season-best on vault with a 49.275, which is tied as the fifth-best vault total in school history. Last year, Minnesota scored a 49.300 on vault at the Big Ten Championships on March 24 and also had a 49.275 at Denver one week earlier. 9.0 - Dating back to last season, Minnesota has scored 49.000 or better on floor exercise in 10 consecutive meets and on vault for the past nine meets. 10.0 - In addition to Slechta, sophomores Kylie Schermann (9.900) and Jenny Covers (9.875, tie) each had career-best scores on vault for the Golden Gophers, while freshman Hanna Nordquist won the balance beam with a score of 9.850 and fellow freshman Lindsay Mable tied Campbell for first on bars with a 9.825. The team total was Minnesota s best-ever at an Intrasquad Meet. In fact, the last time the Gophers recorded a score of more than 192.000 at an Intrasquad (193.500 on Jan. 3, 2009), they opened the season with a 194.375-192.575 home win versus Arizona the following week. That s also the last time Minnesota opened the season with a win. Big Finish With its third-place finish at last year s Big Pronunciations Golich = Goal-itch Lokos = Loh-kose Schermann = Sure-man Slechta = Slec-tuh Ten Championships, Minnesota snapped a five-year streak of placing outside the Top 3 at the event. Last year s finish was Minnesota s best since winning the title during 2006. Performing at a High Level The Golden Gophers surpassed a team total of 196.000 four times during 2012, which is the most in one season since also reaching that plateau four times during 2004. Vaulting Up the Charts Minnesota recorded its third-best team vault score in school history by recording a 49.300 at the Big Ten Championships.
