BULLETin CALIFORNIA STATE COLLEGE «SAN BERNARDINO 1965 1976 CENTER FOR NEW DIRECTIONS OPENS November 5, 1976 The housewife whose kids are in school all day, the breadwinner who feels trapped in a dead-end job, and others who interrupted their education for family, military service, work or other reasons are being offered a new choice. The College's Center for New Directions, recently established, will provide a special free counseling service to those who don't "think college" because of previous academic deficiences or interirption in academic attendance. The new center might just also be the cup of tea for those who are looking for a second career or advanced degree or mature persons who are wondering what to do with the rest of their lives. Lorraine Beaman, coordinator of the program, states that the free counseling service provides an initial counseling interview, general information about types of programs, classes and scheduling of classes, referrals for academic vocational and personal-growth counseling; information on low cost child care, career information and many other student services. Six ways to attend CSCSB are open to the returning students: through regular day or evening classes, extension classes, external degree programs, summer sessions, the Open College extension program (formal admission not required) or selfpaced study outside the classroom, Ms. Beaman adds that a special adraissions category may enable non-high school graduates to enroll. Probationary admission also may be possible in some instances. Lois McAfee, Public Affairs Assistant, is also coordinating the program. ft ft IT'S OPEN ENROLLMENT TIME» He^th Insurance Deadline - November 15. Employees may enroll, change plans, or add all eligible family members. Group Family Hospital Income Plan Deadline - November 15. This is a group insurance plan which pays the employee a pre-determined amount each day that the employee (or any covered family member) is confined in a licensed general hospital. Accident Protection Plan Deadline - November 15. This is a group insurance plan which pays the employee (or any covered family member) a predetermined amount for accidental death or dismemberment. Deferred Compensation Plan Deadline - November 30. This State-sponsored plan allows deferral of up to 80% of an employee's salary until retirement. No state or federal income tax is paid on this money until after retirement. NOTE: A meeting to discuss this program is scheduled todag from 2-3 p.m. in SS-171, All employees welcome. Dr. Johansen, also on Cal. Baptist College and UCR faculties, is an authority on Baroque instruments. The College and public are Invited to meet the WO0BTUMM1M S artist in a reception at 8 p.m. opening day in the Art Gallery and see his display of new and experimental ways of turning on a wood lathe. Mr. Doyle, Assoc. Prof., Art, stresses utility as well as artistry in his wood objects. The objects feature a wide range of sizes and uses, often with surprising characteristics. The artist is currently developing a lathe for woodturning which will allow him to turn even larger pieces. Mr. Doyle earned a MFA from the School for American Craftsmen in New York. Sarojam Mankau and Alex Sokoloff (Biology) appeared as panelists in a Creation- Evolution seminar held at the San Bernardino Convention Center last week. Frederick Newton (Psychology) recently presented two papers at the Sixteenth Annual Mtg. of the Society for Psychophysiological Research in San Diego on "High Frequency EEG Correlates of Cognition," and "Long-Term Control of 40Hz EEG Activity." ^ Tennes Rosengren (Education) presented a workshop, "Training Session in Communication Skills," for students and teachers at Richardson Jr. High School, Oct. 25. George Weiny (P.E. & Rec.) will present a report on findings of a field study cf the fauna cf Santa Cruz and Santa Rosa Islands, Talcott Shoals and Rhodes Reef at the International Conference on Underwater Educ. in San Diego, Nov. 5-7.
