ETCETERA... Dear Sisters and Brothers, Things are kicking around St. Aloysius these days! Don t forget to come and enjoy Holy Smoke on Saturday, 4 October. Twenty teams have registered to compete all with interesting names. A couple even dared to use my name in vain, using it without permission! I can t wait to sample ribs, one of my favorite foods! Next Thursday, 9 October, the Senior Ministry has its annual luncheon at 11:00 a.m. in the parish hall. I believe I m qualified as a senior according to AARP s definition, so I hope I ll be allowed to share the luncheon with other seniors. Come join us! Of course the annual Auction on the next day shouldn t be forgotten! It ll be at L Auberge on Friday, 10 October, 6:30 p.m. until 11:00 p.m. I was sick and couldn t come to the last auction but am looking forward to come to this one. The committee has worked hard and come up with some interesting items for auction. I read some interesting articles I wish to share with you. Professors Phillip Hardy, Kelly Kendra and Brian Patterson surveyed 575 lapsed Roman Catholics from November 2012 to March 2013, asking them why they had stopped attending Mass or had left the church altogether; what might motivate them to return; and whether the church s stance on issues like homosexuality and abortion had factored into their decision. Then from February to March 2014, 827 Roman Catholics still active in the church were asked about whether their spiritual needs were being met. Results from the survey released last week indicate four major reasons why some Roman Catholics stop going to church, among them: disagreement with church doctrine on birth control, women as priests, homosexuality; a view that there are too many scandals in the church; a feeling parishioners are being judged by the church or are not welcomed. Below are some sample comments: My daughter came out to me as gay, and I went through a divorce after 28 years of marriage. The Church doesn t want either one of us. The archaic idea that only men can lead a congregation and be in the clergy, the underlying message of guilt and fear and the lack of diversity and openness to gays. I struggle with the way the Catholic Church has not adapted an ever changing world. I also feel sometimes people are looked down upon instead of being lifted up by the church. I have visited many parishes in the Springfield community trying to find a priest that seems dedicated to his parishioners and the word of God. All of the priests seem too wrapped up in themselves and the power they perceive they hold. They all seem more wrapped up in themselves, much like politicians. My parish was a cold place. You could walk in on Sunday, go to mass and walk out without speaking to another soul, I longed for fellowship. Cont d Page 3 PARISH STAFF Parish Office: 343-6657 Fr. Than N. I hope our parish isn t perceived as a cold place. When you come to Mass this Sunday, please be sure to greet people around you. It d be strange indeed to share the (Eucharistic) meal without knowing at least the people around us. And if I seem too wrapped up in myself and the power I perceive I hold, slap me and wake me up to reality! One area of concern, both in our society and in our Church, is the steady decline in the numbers of marriages. According to data in Pew Research Center, twenty percent of adults older than 25, about 42 million people, have never married, up from 9 percent in 1960. Until a few decades ago, marriage was mostly an economic equation, as the Nobelwinning economist Gary Becker described: Men earned money to support a family while women ran the household. But with the rise of birth control, household technology and women in the work force, marriage became less about economics and more about love, as the historian Stephanie Coontz said in her book Marriage, a History: From Obedience to Intimacy, or How Love Conquered Marriage. If the reason for marriage shifted from economics to love, maybe we should rejoice! What do you think?! 2014 BISHOP S ANNUAL APPEAL Centered on the Concerns of Others To the many thousands of our neighbors who receive support, the Bishop s Annual Appeal is an essential source of service and assistance all across the Diocese of Baton Rouge. For 29 years, caring parishioners have responded to an annual invitation: Bear one another s burdens, and so you will fulfill the law of Christ. (Galatians 6:2) Modeling the love of Jesus, 290 parishioners from St. Aloysius Church Parish participated this past year, contributing a total of $81,124. Please accept our thanks for your involvement. Bishop Robert W. Muench shepherds an ever-changing diocesan community, so needs are varied and ongoing. We invite you to take part once again. This week, parishioners will receive a personal invitation from Bishop Muench, mailed to their home, inviting them to participate in the 2014-15 Appeal. Please think of those in need and pledge your prayerful and financial support of the Bishop s Annual Appeal. From the blessing God has granted you, give to support the needs of those around you. Consider the concerns of others, for God knows our needs. If you do not receive a copy of this year s appeal by mail, please contact the Office of Stewardship at 336-8790 or stewardship@diobr.org. For an in depth look at the ministries or programs supported through the BAA, visit baabr.org.
