We also laid to rest two of our own, Gunny Burch and Ed Crouse, they will be missed. There would be no way we could have accomplished this without the hard working members of the Cape Atlantic Detachment. We will be working on our Family's Picnic for July, and Toys for Tots is coming up as well as our yearly Golf Tournament. We will need all hands. We will be holding Staff meetings on the first Thursday of each month, so we will be ready for our regular meeting on the second Thursday of each month. Make a note of the two dates. Gunny was a long time member of the Detachment. A little Cape-Atlantic USMCL history of Gunny Burch. Most members don't know but the Gunny dug all the drain lines, by hand, for the bath rooms and kitchen. If you note a red tape marker on the carpet by the circuit breakers that markets a spot where a drain was going to be for the kitchen in that area. Initial the building inspector was trying to make the bathrooms double the size they are now. After pointing out a few facts about the League, the building inspector allowed us to arrange things as they now are. Point being that was a long dig by hand, the Gunny accomplished. So in a Marine tradition, when we have need of the bath room, please have good thoughts of the GUNNY. Good Friend and Marine RIP; Past Commandant Jim Dunbar In Memoriam 3

VA Secretary Formalizes Expansion of Emergency Mental Health Care to Former Service Members WASHINGTON Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) today released finalized plans that lay the framework for providing emergency mental health coverage to former service members with other-than-honorable (OTH) administrative discharges. This is the first time a VA Secretary has implemented an initiative specifically focused on this group of former service members who are in mental health distress. Suicide prevention is my top clinical priority, said Secretary Shulkin, also a physician. We want these former service members to know there is someplace they can turn if they are facing a mental health emergency whether it means urgent care at a VA emergency department, a Vet Center or through the Veterans Crisis Line. Effective July 5, all Veterans Health Administration (VHA) medical centers will be prepared to offer emergency stabilization care for former service members who present at the facility with an emergent mental health need. Under this initiative, former service members with an OTH administrative discharge may receive care for their mental health emergency for an initial period of up to 90 days, which can include inpatient, residential or outpatient care. During this time, VHA and the Veterans Benefits Administration will work together to determine if the mental health condition is a result of a service-related injury, making the service member eligible for ongoing coverage for that condition. Since Secretary Shulkin announced his intent in March to expand VA mental health coverage to service members with OTH administrative discharges, VA has worked with key internal and external stakeholders, including members of Congress, Veterans Service Organizations and community partners on the issue. Veterans in crisis should call the Veterans Crisis Line at 800-273-8255 (press 1), or text 838255. We anticipate having some additional items to share with all of you by the end of the week, so stay tuned for another update in the next few days. Melanie Brunson Director of Government Relations Blinded Veterans Association Respectfully, Melanie Brunson ### 9
The Marine Corps League has a New Chief Operating Officer Mr. Robert J. Borka has accepted the offer from the Board of Trustees to become our new Chief Operating Officer of the National Marine Corps League effective 1 July 2017. Commandant Richard Gore and the Board of Trustees welcome Mr. Borka aboard and look forward to working with him during our restructuring of the League. We also want to thank Mr. Tom Hazlett for his service and leading the League through the past couple of years. We wish Tom success in his next endeavor. Please share this with your Division officers and Detachments. Attached is a news release for Mr. Borka. Semper Fi Tony Modzelewski History of the U.S. Marine Corps logo The Eagle, Glove and Anchor consists of a fouled anchor, a globe featuring the Western Hemisphere, and an eagle with spread wings. Since its inception in 1868, the logo has been part of the U.S. Marine uniform, and the general design is thought to derive from the Royal Marines' Globe and Laurel. Brigadier General Jacob Zeilin appointed a board to create and approve the emblem in 1868, and it was adopted that same year. A different logo created in 1859 for the officer's dress uniform insignia used the first version of same color scheme as the Eagle, Globe and Anchor. In 1954, the commandant of the Marine Corps, General Lemuel C. Shepherd, Jr., requested a new design, and an American bald eagle replaced the crested eagle of the 19th-century design. U.S. President Eisenhower approved the design on June 22, 1954. The ribbon clasped in the eagle's beak, which bears the Latin motto "semper fidelis," was also part of the 1868 design. 10
