Museums and Visitor Services Juneteenth Festival on Pocahontas Island - June 22 By the 1800s, Pocahontas Island had one of the U.S. largest known populations of free Blacks residing in its neighborhood. It was a place for commerce, integration and freedom as it was home to the underground railroad. On June 22, 2014, the City of Petersburg will take time and recognize this American treasure as it commemorates that 150 th anniversary of the American Civil War and Emancipation. Come join the City for historical trolley tours of the neighborhood and buggy rides along the Appomattox River. We will have four different kinds of cuisine for sell, unique vendors, children s activity area, petting zoo, face painting, big trucks, little cars, and motorcycles too If you so choose, you can join us for a UNITY WALK starting at the Farmer s Market and ending up on the historical grounds of Pocahontas Island where the ancestors lived, thrived and fought for freedom. This is truly a historical moment that I believe the forefathers and mothers would be proud of the City s efforts to recognize the blood, sweat and tears that kept generations of people moving forward. The afternoon will be filled with food, fun, and folklore. We encourage everyone to arrive early (1:30 p.m.) and walk two blocks with us as we join and walk to these ancestral grounds being led by Ezibu Muntu African Dance Company and a drum call and response with Orisegun and company. This is a day to remember as we pay homage to the ancestors and respect the current Pocahontas citizens. says Brian Little, Manager of Cultural Affair, City of Petersburg.
