Annually, the Research Prgram Awards f the DS grants funding up t $120,000 ver tw years (i.e., f up t $60,000 per year) fr new research prgrams and established research prgrams. 2. They prvide this shrt-term funding t supprt innvative prpsals enabling academic surgens t develp prgrams sufficiently t qualify fr additinal supprt 3. The prgrams f research will evaluate nvel strategies t transfrm surgical care delivery. 4. All participating academic surgens are eligible t apply. 5. A cmpetitive peer-review and transparent prcess will select the mst deserving prpsals. 6. A ne-year delay befre re-applying after success will be impsed. New research prgrams are currently unfunded and defined by a nvel fcus, hypthesis r questin, t be submitted by any (i.e. new r established) investigatrs, and have plans fr sustained inquiry, research persnnel, multiple publicatins, and external grant applicatins. Established research prgrams are defined by existing and sustained inquiry, existing research persnnel, multiple publicatins, and presence f external grant funding. Research Prgram Awards will prvide supprt fr research persnnel t cnduct clinical, translatinal, educatinal, and quality imprvement research aiming t imprve shrt and lng-term patient utcmes. Funds shuld be used t supprt the human resurces necessary t implement, test and/r evaluate new cncepts and mdes f surgical care delivery. In general, the funds are nt intended fr equipment, hwever the innvative use f equipment (i.e., imaging) culd frm the basis f a prject. Funding may nt be used t defray the cst f implantable medical devices, drug trials, and csts f travel. Eligibility Requirements 1. Prpsals must be submitted by individuals with primary appintments t the in the Faculty f Medicine f the University f Ottawa. 2. A prpsal must have the supprt frm its divisin chair prir t the submissin t the selectin cmmittee (and supply a letter indicating that the divisin wuld prvide $25k/year). 3. A maximum f tw prpsals/divisin will be accepted fr review fr divisins with 24 surgens; and a maximum f three prpsals/divisin will be accepted fr review fr divisins with 25 surgens. 4. Initial eligibility criteria includes (in first year): plans fr sustained inquiry and investigatin; plans t hire research persnnel; plans fr greater than tw publicatins; and plans t submit external grant applicatins. 5. Cntinuing eligibility criteria includes (in secnd year r fr established prgrams): existing hired persnnel submitted at least ne external grant applicatin submitted manuscript(s) (fr established prgrams nly) Applicatin Prcedure 1. Innvatin and Knwledge Translatin: creatin f new knwledge, tls r innvatin and creating awareness abut innvatin r tl studied The innvatin t imprve surgical care and/r reduce csts must be clearly identified within the prpsal. A cherent knwledge translatin strategy shuld be clearly defined and discussed. 2. Ptential fr Impact: the ptential impact f research prgram within and beynd the lcal institutin and the academic cmmunity Applicants shuld articulate the impact n bth patient care and csts f care. 3. Strengths f the PI and Team: the experience and skills f the research team, including: track recrd, histrical prductivity and impact, likelihd that this team can cmplete the prpsal being prpsed, time/availability t cmmit t the prpsal, and cllabrative arrangements with clleagues, if applicable. The PI's CV shuld include publicatins, presentatins, and grants. A statement abut the prductivity and impact f the PI's wrk shuld be included, as well as their availability t cmmit t the research prject. The expertise (and experience) f research persnnel t be supprted shuld be stated. Any cllabrative arrangements supprt the prject shuld be identified. 4. Feasibility: clarity and realism f the research prpsal with respect t the bjectives, timeframe, intended utcmes and utcme metrics, and resurces available. 5. Funding (Use and Ptential): efficient and effective use f funds t achieve research bjective, as well as the ptential t attract external funders Applicants shuld articulate hw their prpsal ptimally uses the funding. The ptential fr btaining external funding will be a majr cnsideratin fr the review panel. All prpsals shuld include an external funding strategy, including the names f target funding rganizatins. Matching cntributins fr each research award include $25,000/year/award cntributed by Department f Surgery, $25,000/year/award cntributed by divisin, and $10,000/year/award cntributed by University f Ottawa. Each award has a tw-year duratin (pending the mid-award reprt). 3. As principal investigatr, the award winner will need t prvide their individual cst centre t cllect their award grant mney. Once all matching cntributins fr an award winner are cllected, the award will be disbursed t the award winner s cst centre. 4. The financial year f the fund is frm May 1 t April 30.
