Newsletter November 2003 wc-uiuc.prairienet.org Volume 14, Number 2 Holiday Tea Thursday, December 4, 2003 (see page 2 for more information) A Word from the President... The Fall Sign-Up was held on Wednesday, September 10, 2003, at Lincoln Square Mall in Urbana (see pictures on pages 6 and 7). One hundred twenty-five members enjoyed breakfast goodies while sharing summer vacation stories with friends. It was wonderful to see old friends and meet new members. I would like to thank Shirley Walker and Cindy Glenn, Third Vice Presidents and the Interest Group Chairs; Stephanie Price, Meeting Manager; and Board Members for helping to make this a very successful event. Nancy Ikenberry and Lisa Brown, Second Vice Presidents, hosted the Welcome Coffee for the Newcomers Group. This event was held on Thursday, October 2, 2003, in Nancy s beautifully remodeled home. Thirty ladies enjoyed a wonderful continental breakfast and tea while getting acquainted. Each guest received a fragrant pumpkin scented candle. Nancy and Lisa have worked very hard planning a wonderful schedule of events for the year. The Newcomers Group is open to all members of The Women s Club. Dr. William Kinderman, Professor of Musicology and Chair of the Musicology Division, was the featured speaker at our Fall Luncheon on Friday, October 17, 2003 at Champaign Country Club. The friendly staff of the Country Club served a delicious mixed baby green salad and chicken florentine. Guests enjoyed a fascinating lecture on Beethoven and his music. Dr. Kinderman performed selected musical works for piano. There was time after the lecture for members to speak with Dr. Kinderman about his new three-volume book, Beethoven s Creative Process which is now available for purchase at the Illini Union Book Store for $125.00. Our Scholarship Committee Chair, Marie Tompkins, announced that seven one thousand dollar scholarships will be awarded at our annual Scholarship Brunch on Saturday, February 7, 2004. The Judith Life Ikenberry Scholarship for Fine Arts will be awarded in the amount of one thousand dollars. Applications were accepted through October 31, 2003. The Scholarship Committee will be interviewing Scholarship Applicants in mid-november. The Antiques and Collectibles Group will hold their Annual Auction to benefit scholarship at the home of Sandy Beak on Wednesday, November 12, 2003, at 1:15 PM. Women s Club members are encouraged to bring their antiques, collectibles, and treasures to the auction. Should you not be able to attend the Auction, please call Sandy at 344-6856 to arrange a time to drop off your donation for the Auction. All proceeds benefit our Scholarship Fund. I am pleased to announce that Mrs. Joan Stukel has generously invited The Women s Club for Holiday Tea at the President s House on Thursday, December 4, 2003, from 2:30 to 4:30 PM. The Monticello High School Madrigal Singers will be performing from 3:00 to 3:30 PM that afternoon. Please mark your calendars for this not to be missed event. Reservations are required no later than Monday, December 1, 2003. Women s Club members only, please. The Women s Club 2003-2004 Budget and Financial Statement is published in the Membership Directory enclosed in this Newsletter. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me. I look forward to seeing you at the Holiday Tea at the President s House. Judy Skreiner
