October Food Committee and Resident Council Meetings The History of Oktoberfest Crown Prince Ludwig, later to become King Ludwig I, was married to Princess Therese of Saxony-Hildburghausen on October 12,1810. The citizens of Munich were invited to attend the festivities held on the fields in front of the city gates to celebrate the happy, royal event. The fields have been named Theresienwiese ( Theresa s Fields ) in honor of the Crown Princess ever since, although the locals have since abbreviated the name simply to the Wies n. Horse races in the presence of the Royal Family marked the close of the event that was celebrated as a festival for the whole of Bavaria. The decision to repeat the horse races in the subsequent year gave rise to the tradition of the Oktoberfest. -from www.muenchen.de Flu Immunization Clinic Flu immunizations will be available on Monday, October 2nd, beginning at 1:30 p.m. The October Food Committee and Resident Council Meetings will be held on Monday, October 9th, in the Living Room. 10:30 a.m. Food Committee 11:00 a.m. Resident Council Do you like Mexican food? The Harvest Moon It is the Harvest Moon! On gilded vanes And roofs of villages, on woodland crests And their aerial neighborhoods of nests Deserted, on the curtained window-panes Of rooms where children sleep, on country lanes And harvest-fields, its mystic splendor rests! Please Join Us For The Walnut House Halloween Party On Tuesday, October 31st At 1:30 p.m. Activities Will Include: Costume Contest For Residents, Staff, and Children (with Prizes!) Trick-Or-Treating, Games, Crafts, and Refreshments For Everyone! Gone are the birds that were our summer guests, With the last sheaves return the laboring wains! All things are symbols: the external shows Of Nature have their image in the mind, As flowers and fruits and falling of the leaves; The song-birds leave us at the summer's close, Only the empty nests are left behind, And pipings of the quail among the sheaves. - Henry Wadsworth Longfellow The Bookmobile Will Return To Walnut House On 10/24/17!
