I was honorably discharged in 1970. I went back into the Great Falls USNR from 1976 to 1977. My military days were the most fun and most memorable of all time, and it is with great pride that I served this great country of ours for our freedoms that too many take for granted! One (of many) military story I'd like to share is the time my Navy roommate, JoAnn and I went to Tijuana to hit some nightclubs, and while out on the dance floor, I heard someone yell my name. I looked around, wondering who knew me in Tijuana, and who should be out on the dance floor yelling at me? It was none other than Dick Buller! Those were the days! Russell High school in Great Falls. Attended boot camp in the summer of 1966 after graduation and then returned home for a short time. Assigned to Radioman school in 1967, which was four months of intensive training in learning Morse code and operating teletype machines as well as basic electronics at the Naval Training Center in San Diego, California. October of 1967 reported to Treasure Island in California near San Francisco and assigned to active duty aboard the USS Clarion River (LSMR 409) and flew to Subic Bay in the Philippines to join the crew aboard the ship. Nicknamed the Rocket Rain Makers the small flatbottomed ship traveled to Vietnam and we began support for ground troops just off the coast of Vietnam. My responsibility was to copy and send Teletype messages directing where 5 spin-stabilized rockets were to be launched and at what number of rounds the ground troops requested. The messages were routed by me to the captain on the bridge, sometimes while fire was underway. Lots of noise that was hard on the ears! There were only four LSMR s in the entire Navy so a unique experience. Determining my hearing was poor enough that I should be discharged from military service and was done so honorably on March 1, 1968 as a Third Class Radioman Petty Offficer (E4). Awarded the National Defense Service Medal and the Vietnam
Service Medal. To date I mange the ship s website that I developed in 1999.
