WGVU KIDS presents The Great American Read Contest Eligibility & Rules NO PURCHASE NECESSARY TO ENTER OR WIN. The WGVU Kids presents The Great American Read Contest is coordinated by WGVU Public Media. The Contest begins on or about September 15, 2018 and ends on February 15, 2019. Winners will be notified and announced on or about April 1, 2019. Eligibility & Entry Guidelines To be eligible, entrants must be children residing in the state of Michigan in (or equivalent to) grades Pre-Kindergarten through Twelfth Grade during the school year of 2018-19 (public, private, charter, or home-school). Children of employees of WGVU Public Media and judges are not eligible. Only one entry per person/group will be accepted in this contest; all subsequent entries will be disqualified. Each entry must include the official WGVU KIDS presents TGAR Contest Entry Form for each entrant, with the required signature of a parent/guardian (and, if appropriate, the optional signature of the sponsoring teacher/advisor), consenting to allowing their child/ward to enter the Contest, confirming that the entry is original work, and granting certain rights to entry materials. The entry form must be complete and legible to be eligible. It is the responsibility of each parent, teacher and/or advisor to obtain and read these contest rules, requirements and guidelines. All submitted entries must be the entrants original, unpublished, and previously unproduced work. Entries must meet privacy policy guidelines. All entries must contain appropriate content. Entries containing inappropriate content will be disqualified. Failure to meet contest rules and requirements may result in disqualification from the Contest and WGVU reserves the right in its sole discretion to disqualify ineligible entries; such entries will not be returned. Each entry must meet category guidelines and requirements. SEE GUIDELINES SECTION FOR CATEGORY REQUIREMENTS. Original Work Policy All submitted entries must be the entrant s original, unpublished, and previously unproduced work. Parents, teachers, and advisors are encouraged to help their student(s) with the gathering of materials, to encourage critical thinking skills and creativity, foster ideas, but all ideas and work must be original to the student(s). Project entries cannot include plagiarized work. Plagiarism is considered the deliberate copying of someone else s thoughts, ideas, expressions, words, artistic expressions, or scientific work without formally acknowledging its source. Plagiarism includes entries that copy words or ideas from someone else without giving credit, the failure to put quotation marks around unmodified content that was copied from an outside source, and the use of photos, graphs, charts, or other images without acknowledging their source. Privacy Policy & Appropriate Content Student privacy and safety is important to WGVU. All parents/guardians must provide consent forms for students to participate and to release some limited, personally identifiable student information publicly. Entrants are encouraged to use good judgement about what may be shared publicly, and parents, teachers, and advisors are asked to assist by monitoring identifying personal information shared by students in parts of entries that may be posted publicly (i.e. full names, school, social media handles, etc.) Additionally, entries containing images, video, or stories of people or organizations other than students participating in the contest MUST contain written consent from additional parties and include this consent with their contest entry form. All entries must contain appropriate content explicit language, violence, or sexual content are not permitted in entries. Content that is aimed to defame, marginalize, discriminate, demean or infringe on the human dignity of others, living or deceased, is not permitted. Judging, Awards & Notification All entries submitted will be judged using the judging criteria and percentages below by a panel of judges organized through WGVU Public Media. The three entries with the highest percentage in each grade will be deemed the winners for their respective grade. Judging for each grade will occur on the dates as set forth by WGVU Public Media. The judging criteria and percentages used by any judging in connection with the Contest shall be scored and graded using a rubric based on the following criteria as follows: 40% Originality, Creativity, & Uniqueness 40% Relevance, Clarity to Chosen Work of Fiction & Quality of Work 20% Organization, Utilization, Application of Medium & Resources All decisions of the judges are final and binding and not subject to appeal or review. In the event of any ties to determine the three highest percentage winners, the entry(ies) with the highest score(s) in creativity and originality category from among all tying entries will be deemed the winner(s) from all tying entries. Each winner s entry may be posted on the WGVU KIDS presents TGAR Contest website at wgvu.org, click on the Kids TGAR Contest link. 1

WGVU KIDS presents The Great American Read Contest Eligibility & Rules Prizes Three winners per grade will be selected. Winners will be invited to attend and be recognized at the WGVU Public Media Education Celebration in early May 2019. Winners will receive a WGVU Public Media Gift bag and also be entered in a Grand Prize drawing. WGVU KIDS presents TGAR winners must be present at the WGVU Public Media Education Celebration to receive gift bag and Grand Prize, if chosen. Prizes are not redeemable for cash, non-transferable, and non-substitutable, except at the sole discretion of WGVU Public Media. Entry Submission Submitting an entry electronically: Submit entry electronically by uploading to our file share site via the link on WGVU s Kids presents TGAR Contest page at wgvu.org. Video files should be MP4 format. Required for each participant: Contest Entry form. Deadline for receipt (time stamp) of entries: February 15, 2019, 11:59pm Submitting an entry by mail: Mailed in entries must include the official WGVU Kids presents TGAR Contest Entry Form- completed, legibly written with all contact information. Required for each participant: Contest Entry Form. Deadline for receipt (postmarked) of entries: February 15, 2019. Address for mailed in entries: WGVU Public Media WGVU Kids TGAR Contest 301 Fulton St. W Grand Rapids, MI 49504-6492 Submitting by drop-off: Submit entry by bringing it to WGVU. WGVU Studios are open Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm in the Meijer Broadcast Center in the L.V. Eberhard Center on the Pew Campus of Grand Valley State University at 301 Fulton St. W in Grand Rapids. Each project should be clearly labeled (and properly stored, if applicable) with entrant and/or group s name(s) and be accompanied by the required Contest Entry form. Deadline for receipt of entries: February 15, 2019, 5:00pm Return of Entries The Contest administrators at WGVU Public Media are not required to return mailed entries. Every effort will be made to return mailed entries if accompanied by a stamped, self-addressed envelope, box, or container of an appropriate size. WGVU Public Media is not responsible for late, lost, stolen, misdirected, damaged, mutilated, incomplete, returned, or illegible entries, or postage-due mail. The Contest administrators at WGVU Public Media will make every effort, but are not required, to return dropped-off entries. The designated person in the Contest Entry Form will be notified via email that the entry is ready and MUST claim the entry within two weeks. WGVU Public Media reserves the right to dispose of or donate entries not claimed within the designated two week claim period. Rights Associated with Contest Submission of the Entry Form constitutes permission from the participant s parent/legal guardian for WGVU Public Media to use the participants name, likeness, biographical information, information and materials contained in the Entry Form, photographs, and any statements or remarks made about the Contest in advertising and promotion without further compensation or permission, except where prohibited by law. All entries, and any copyrights therein, become the sole property of WGVU Public Media. By entering, entrants parent/legal guardian agree to abide by the above stated rules, and warrant that their child s/ward s entry is their original work and does not infringe upon or violate rights of any third party, and grant to WGVU Public Media the right to edit, publish, promote, and otherwise use their entry materials without permission, notice or compensation. No royalties will be paid at this or any time. By submitting an entry and Entry Form, each participant s parent/legal guardian, on behalf of the participant, agrees to assign all right, title, and interest in and to the entry and Entry Form to WGVU Public Media and warrants that the participant s parent/legal guardian has the authority to assign such right, title and interest. In the event that any applicable law requires certain formalities to be fulfilled to effectuate such grant of rights, each participant (and parent or guardian) agrees to cooperate with WGVU Public Media. 2

Entries are not limited to the suggestions listed above. Performance Arts submissions must be recorded and edited - videos must be at least 60 seconds long, but may not exceed 5 minutes. All entries must be clearly labeled with entrant s or group s name(s). In addition to meeting all Contest Eligibility Rules and Requirements, each entry must include the official WGVU KIDS presents TGAR Contest Entry Form for each entrant, with the required signature of a parent/guardian (and, if appropriate, the additional signature of the sponsoring teacher/advisor), consenting to allowing their child/ward to enter the Contest, confirming that the entry is original work, and granting certain rights to entry materials. The entry form must be complete and legible to be eligible. STEM/STEAM ENTRY REQUIREMENTS All STEM/STEAM entries must be a relevant, clear expression of the chosen work of fiction and should include a model or prototype. Entries are not limited to the suggestions listed above. The prototype does not have to work, but must illustrate how it would work if it were operational. Expensive materials are not required - entrants may use materials such as cardboard or building blocks to create their prototype. Submission options: - a video (60 to 120 seconds in length) featuring the prototype, showcasing how it works/what it does, and it s relevance to the book. - a slideshow featuring pictures of the prototype, showcasing how it works/what it does, and it s relevance to the book. - mail in or drop off the prototype. WGVU cannot guarantee the safety of fragile pieces. Please provide appropriate packaging for WGVU to safely store your STEM/STEAM entry while it awaits judging. Please label your storage container with your name. Student name should also be on the bottom of the actual STEAM/STEM entry. In addition to meeting all Contest Eligibility Rules and Requirements, each entry must include the official WGVU KIDS presents TGAR Contest Entry Form for each entrant, with the required signature of a parent/guardian (and, if appropriate, the additional signature of the sponsoring teacher/advisor), consenting to allowing their child/ward to enter the Contest, 3

confirming that the entry is original work, and granting certain rights to entry materials. The entry form must be complete and legible to be eligible. If chosen as a Contest Winner, students are expected to bring their prototype with them to WGVU s Education Celebration. WRITING ENTRY REQUIREMENTS All Writing entries must be a relevant, clear expression of the chosen work of fiction. Entries are not limited to the suggestions listed above. Writing submissions may be in English, Spanish or Mandarin language and text and must adhere to the word count requirements. In addition to meeting all Contest Eligibility Rules and Requirements, each entry must include the official WGVU KIDS presents TGAR Contest Entry Form for each entrant, with the required signature of a parent/guardian (and, if appropriate, the additional signature of the sponsoring teacher/advisor), consenting to allowing their child/ward to enter the Contest, confirming that the entry is original work, and granting certain rights to entry materials. The entry form must be complete and legible to be eligible. Format & Illustrations The word count includes a, an, and the, but not the words on non-story pages such as the title page or those that enhance the illustrations. Text must be printed or written legibly or typed. Children who cannot write may dictate their story to be printed, written legibly or typed. The manuscript must be the author s original work if the story has been dictated. Inventive spelling is accepted. Text may be integrated into the illustration pages or on separate pages. Story text may be on pages with illustrations or on separate pages. Stories must have at least five (5) original, clear and colorful illustrations. Original art can include drawings, collages, and 3-D created by the author or photographs taken by the author. Written entries must be created on one side of the paper and numbered on the back of each page. PLEASE DO NOT STAPLE- paperclips only. All entries must be legibly labeled with entrants names on back of each page. Entries are not limited to the suggestions listed above. All Visual Arts entries must be legibly labeled with entrants names on back or bottom. Any drawing media is accepted: pencil, charcoal, watercolor, oil, etc. Please note: Pastels or charcoal entries MUST be properly sprayed to prevent smearing. Visual Art entries on supported canvas or securely adhered to a sturdy backing are permitted, however entries cannot be accepted if they are matted or framed. Visual Arts video submissions must be recorded and edited - videos must be at least 60 seconds long, but may not exceed 3 minutes. WGVU cannot guarantee the safety of fragile pieces. Please provide appropriate packaging for WGVU to store your Visual Arts entry while it awaits judging. Please label your storage container with your name. In addition to meeting all Contest Eligibility Rules and Requirements, each entry must include the official WGVU KIDS presents TGAR Contest Entry Form for each entrant, with the required signature of a parent/guardian (and, if appropriate, the additional 4

signature of the sponsoring teacher/advisor), consenting to allowing their child/ward to enter the Contest, confirming that the entry is original work, and granting certain rights to entry materials. The entry form must be complete and legible to be eligible. If chosen as a Contest Winner, students are expected to bring their Visual Arts project (exception: video projects already submitted to WGVU) with them to WGVU s Education Celebration. 5
