National 4-H Week National 4H week is October 5-11, 2014. Now is the time to start making plans to celebrate 4H and help promote our organization to others. Each club should make a special effort to promote 4H to people in the county. Here are some ideas for promoting our great organization: 1. Put up displays in local business windows 2. Make posters for businesses, schools or other organizations, make it a club contest. 3. Bring at least one friend to your next 4H meeting and encourage them to join. 4. Write an article about your club or leader and put it in the local paper. 5. Write an article about what 4H means to you and your family. 6. Have members of your club visit the 4 th grade classrooms and encourage others to join 4H. 7. Help a new club get started in your area. Clubs can be large or small, it takes only 6 members and a leader to start a new club. Club Officers Don t forget you need to turn in your secretary and treasurer s books and your historian book to your leaders by September 15. These will be evaluated in October for awards. Treasurer s should have their books audited. Dupont Pioneer Seed Grants for Community Improvement Projects Do you have a project you would like to do with your club but need some financial help? Pioneer Grants are again available this fall. Grants will be awarded from $50 to $500 but usually don t exceed half the cost of the project. Successful projects are usually those that partner with other community groups, involve a whole 4-H club and make a positive impact on the community. For more information please visit: http://www.extension.iastate.edu/4h/pioneergrants Applications are due to the County Extension Office by November 15. Check out the brochure. Record Keeping Remember a project is MORE than just a fair exhibit! A project is an area that you want to learn more about. When you fill out your project sheets be sure to include all the things you did this year in an area not just your fair exhibit. For example: preparing family meals or snacks, helping serve special dinners for organizations or community events, presentations on food would all be part of the food and nutrition project. An exhibit is just an example of something you learned in the project area during the 4H year. You should have done more than just your exhibit in the project for the year. Goals are a very important part of your record keeping. Each project area should have a couple of goals and a paragraph telling what you did throughout the year in the project area. Don t forget to tell about citizenship and leadership skills you used in the project. All project areas and exhibits have a cost, nothing is totally free. Be sure that you include the financial part of this year s project either on a livestock expense sheet or in your project worksheet. Flour, lumber, feed, thread, material all have a cost that needs to be recorded in your record keeping because some one had to pay for them. Record keeping is a time for you to tell the story of your hard work. If you don t write down what you do no one will ever know about what you did or what you learned. It is okay to add a news article with your name underlined and a few photos with an important caption telling us what the photo is showing. The year is also important to document it for years to come. Have fun with your record keeping get creative! Club Programming Fall is the time of year when leaders, club officers and 4H members begin planning the new year s program. If you are an older member or parent, think about volunteering to assist in this process. Leaders have lots of responsibilities and if everyone helps out just a little, it makes their job easier. Volunteer to host a meeting, lead an activity, or bring an expert in for a project meeting. 4H is a family affair so try to get involved in the process. OUR VISION A WORLD IN WHICH YOUTH AND ADULTS LEARN, GROW, AND WORK TOGETHER AS CATALYSTS FOR POSTIVE CHANGE
