Section 1 Funding opportunities Intelligent Energy Europe (IEE) The EU has set itself ambitious targets to achieve clean and secure energy for tomorrow. An optimal use of available tools is necessary to meet these targets. A wide range of technologies and methods exist to improve energy efficiency, turn renewables into viable energy sources and reduce emissions. However, market conditions prevent them from reaching their full potential. This is where the Intelligent Energy Europe (IEE) programme comes in. IEE funding is provided for creative projects focusing on: Promoting energy efficiency and encouraging the rational use of energy sources; Increasing the use of new and renewable energy sources as well as encouraging energy diversification; Stimulating energy efficiency and renewables in the field of transport. The latest IEE call for proposals was published on 13 December 2012 and will close on 8 May 2013. Projects focusing on renewables should deal with grid issues, permitting procedures, social acceptance and strategic initiatives (contributing to the implementation of policy, legislation and regulation across the renewable energy sectors). More information on the current IEE call is available here: http://ec.europa.eu/energy/intelligent/gettingfunds/call-for-proposals/how-to-apply/index_en.htm European Metrology Research Programme (EMRP) On 31 January, EURAMET e.v. launched a call within the EMRP (European Metrology Research Programme) addressing the topic areas Metrology for Energy, and Metrology for Environment: Stage 1 of the Call, call for Potential Research Topics (PRTs), is open from 31 January 2013 to 17 March 2013. Stage 2 of the Call, call for proposals for Joint Research Projects (JRPs) and associated Researcher Excellence Grants (REGs), will open on 18 June 2013. More information can be found on the call webpage: www.emrponline.eu/call2013 2

Section2 Secretariat s news TPWind 9 th General Assembly upcoming TPWind 9 th General Assembly (GA) will be held on 5 March in Brussels, at the The Square. The event, which is entitled Updating the SRA/MDS, will focus on the development of the Platform s new Strategic Research Agenda / Market Deployment Strategy, which will be published in early 2014. The SRA/MDS is an overview of the R&D needs and challenges of the EU wind energy sector and as such it represents the starting point for an effective implementation of the European Wind Initiative (EWI). The GA will be divided into three sessions. The morning session will feature a plenary where TPWind members will be updated on the implementation of the EWI and the activities of the Platforms. Working Group meetings will follow for the rest of the morning and most of the afternoon. An afternoon plenary session will feature presentations from WG Chairs, who will update TPWind members on the work of the Working Groups. As usual, the event will be closed by a networking reception. TPWind encourages all its members to take part in this event, which will be crucial for a proper update of the Platform s SRA/MDS. For more information on the event, please contact Filippo Gagliardi (filippo.gagliardi@ewea.org; +32 2 213 1813). 3

Section 3 Members news EU wind industry skills shortage: over 5,000 more workers needed per year The European wind industry faces a severe skills shortage of around 5,500 appropriately qualified staff per year. This shortfall could climb to 18,000 by 2030 - nearly 5% of the entire wind industry workforce - if numbers of suitable workers don t increase. The warning comes in a report to be published by the EU s Wind Energy Technology Platform (TPWind), based on research by renewable energy consultancy GL Garrad Hassan. At a time of rising unemployment, it makes no sense that the wind industry cannot find the skilled personnel it urgently needs, commented Jacopo Moccia, Head of Policy Analysis at the European Wind Energy Association, which coordinates and hosts the TPWind Secretariat. There is a real risk of a shortage of suitably skilled workers. Well over half of the shortfall in new workers in 2030 could be in operations and maintenance. Engineers are in desperately short supply and the problem will get far worse unless action is taken, said Andrew Garrad, Chairman of GL Garrad Hassan. Targeted training courses must be created and graduate numbers from those courses increased, so that the sector can meet its staff needs and continue to provide jobs and revenue in today s tough economic climate, commented Henning Kruse, Chairman of TPWind. The recommendations from the upcoming report, European Wind Energy Training Needs, Opportunities and Recommendations, were presented today at EWEA s 2013 Annual Event. They include: Emphasise Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths ( STEM ) skills in vocational training Increase industry input into academic courses More graduates of wind energy generalist courses The harmonisation of Vocational Education and Training across the EU Greater emphasis on training in operations and maintenance The main findings are available here. The full report will be published later this year. For more information contact: Peter Sennekamp, EWEA peter.sennekamp@ewea.org +32 2 213 18 33 In this section of the newsletter articles produced directly by TPWind members are published, providing members with the opportunity to inform the Platform of their most recent achievements, plans, products, studies or R&D efforts. Every month, two to four short articles (maximum 250 words) will be selected by the Executive Committee or the Secretariat and will be included in this section of the newsletter, along with the contact details of the person or company publishing the article. The Secretariat invites all TPWind members who would like to publish an article in the next issue of this newsletter to contact Manuela Conconi and send her their contribution by 22 March at the latest (manuela.conconi@ewea.org; +32 2 2131856). The Secretariat would like to remind all readers that this newsletter is sent to all TPWind members, to those included in the reserve lists of the Platform as well as to selected EC and EWEA representatives (approximately 500 people in total). Section 4 Events EWEA-TWEA Policy Workshop: Wind energy in Turkey: harnessing a great potential 27 March 2013 Ankara, Turkey Organised by EWEA and the Turkish Wind Energy Association Identified as a key emerging market since 2009, Turkey remains one of the key potential markets for growth in the coming years. The favourable macroeconomic situation, the increasing electricity demand, the good wind resources and the ambitious targets all point to a promising future for wind power in Turkey. The growth of the wind power market is one of the highest in Europe but reaching the 20 GW target by 2023 remains a tall order. The workshop will examine the bottlenecks that could be slowing down this growth, while weighing in on longer term debates including Turkey s trade policy and energy mix for the coming decades. To be informed when the programme and registration are live email: techworkshops@ewea.org EWEA Technology Workshop: Resource Assessment 2013 25 & 26 June 2013 Trinity College, Dublin, Ireland Organised in association with the Irish Wind Energy Association: EWEA s second resource assessment workshop, as requested by participants at the highly-acclaimed May 2011 edition.
