Provided by the Sanibel Fitness Center. LEE MEMORIAL BLOOD MOBILE Saturday, December 6 th from 2 p.m. 4 p.m. Back pain is a common problem for many adults. Since yoga postures aim to strengthen the spine as well as lengthen and stretch muscles, yoga can be ideal for many back pain sufferers. This two-hour retreat will walk the student through a series of stretches designed to target the back muscles. Your back will feel amazing after this class, and with a bit of consistency, you could see back aches reduced! Please consult your physician prior to registration to see if this class is right for you. Please bring two blankets and dress warmly in layered clothing. Pre-registration at the Recreation Center s front desk is required. Monday, December 8 th from 9:30 a.m. 12:30 p.m. Body composition is an important component in determining one s fitness level and overall health. Discover your body s ratio of body fat to lean body mass. Please schedule your appointment prior to working out to ensure more accurate test results. Sunday, December 14 th from 1 p.m. 3 p.m. Santa and Mrs. Claus are coming to the Recreation Center to visit all good boys and girls! Participants are encouraged to bring their lists, cameras for photos with Santa and bathing suits. Healthy snacks will be provided. Sunday, December 14 th at Beachview Golf & Tennis Club Check-In begins at 8:15 a.m. & Shotgun-Start begins at 9 a.m. Help out the community by taking part in the City s annual golf tournament! The men s division offers a 5- flight, low net course and the women s offers a 1-flight, low net course. Proceeds benefit City of Sanibel scholarship recipients. These changes have been so subtle that we have lost sight of what real food is. In this humorous but very practical presentation, Carol Simontacchi provides a brief history of some of our most beloved "pseudo-foods" and tips on how to eat "well" in today's food culture. Tuesday, December 16 th Complimentary memory screenings available from 9 a.m. Noon Maximize Your Memory presentation from Noon 1 p.m. While memory screenings are not sufficient to diagnose illnesses like Alzheimer's disease, screenings are a first step in determining if you should have a comprehensive evaluation completed by a medical doctor and/or neuropsychologist. In Maximize Your Memory, learn how aging affects memory and how to reduce the likelihood of developing Alzheimer s disease by attending this free informational workshop. Wednesday, December 17 th from 12:30 p.m. 5:30 p.m. The Sanibel Captiva Lion s Club will be conducting complimentary vision and hearing screenings. Results and recommendations will be presented right after testing so individuals may follow up with their health care providers if necessary. Monday, December 22 nd from 2 p.m. 7 p.m. Audibel Hearing Center will be conducting ear canal check-ups using an otoscope. This diagnostic tool allows you and the technician to see inside the middle ear by displaying the view on a TV screen. NEW YEAR S EVE Wednesday, December 31 st from 7 p.m. 10 p.m. SOCK-HOP All ages are invited to participate in the Sanibel Recreation Center s New Year s Eve Members: Celebration! This old-fashioned sock-hop will take place in the Recreation Center s $7 per person gym. Get started on your New Year s resolution by engaging in a variety of athletic $15 per family games and contests. Prizes will be awarded throughout the evening. Danceable Non-members: music from yesteryear will complement activities and light snacking. Non-alcoholic $9 per person drinks will also be provided. Monday, December 15 th from 6 p.m. 7:30 p.m. We ll continue our exploration of various meditation techniques to transform day-to-day life from stressful to joyful. This will include all new active and silent meditation practices. Please bring a pillow, two blankets and an apple. Also, please dress warmly in layered clothing. Pre-registration at the Recreation Center s front desk is required. Sunday, January 11 th from Noon 2 p.m. Release stress and replenish vitality! Restorative Yoga is an especially nurturing and gentle practice and is very beneficial to those in caretaking positions or with special health needs or physical limitations. In this two-hour respite, you will learn to use pillows and props to support the body and discover restorative postures that are calming, soothing, and renewing adaptations of classic Hatha Yoga poses. Restorative Yoga postures melt away physical and mental tension and deeply rest the mind and body. Open yourself to a practice of being rather than doing. Please bring one standard pillow, an eye pillow if possible and two blankets. Pre-registration at the Recreation Center s front desk is required. Page 4 of 11

Fold, arch, twist, bend, invert, and leap as your rhythmic breathing sets the speed at which you move from pose to pose. Exercises are based on resistance; geared to create a toned, sculpted body. Operating weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., youth have the opportunity to enjoy a variety of activities, including athletics, arts and crafts and swimming. Additional holiday favorites include letters to Santa, ornament art, snow globe construction and even our own life-size version of Candy Land in the gym! Register now at the Recreation Center s front desk! Upcoming Fun Days: January 19 th & January 20 th Youth in grades K thru 8th now have the opportunity to participate in structured, fun activities during nonschool days. Fun Days operate from 8 a.m. 5:30 p.m. Daily activities include arts and crafts, athletics, group games and other counselor-led activities. Healthy snacks are provided; each child will need to bring his or her own lunch. Please register in advance for future dates. Registration continues this week Extended Care accommodates parents who are unable to pick their children up from the After-School program by 5:30 p.m. Children now have the option of participating in supervised activities with a counselor until 6:15 p.m. with a 15-minute grace period lasting until 6:30 p.m. Registration is offered on a weekly basis. Registration forms available at the front desk All 7 th and 8 th grade Recreation Center members are eligible to attend this program at no additional fee. The program operates every school day from 2:15 p.m. 5:30 p.m. Attending children also have the opportunity to participate in structured games and athletics, complete homework, utilize the weight room and socialize with peers. Participants must have a signed release form to use the weight room with a supervising counselor. Register at the front desk space still available! Available to youth in grades K thru 8. Daily activities include indoor and outdoor sports, swimming, arts and crafts, and homework / snack time. The program operates on school days from 2:15 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Children registered in the After-School program receive a one year complimentary Recreation Center membership. This membership can be upgraded to a family membership for an additional $50. SHALLOW WATER AEROBICS DEEP WATER AEROBICS Monday, Wednesday & Friday from 9 a.m. 10 a.m. Tuesday & Thursday from 10:30 a.m. 11:30 a.m. & Saturday, from 11 a.m. Noon This class is held in the exercise pool for attendees who desire a low-impact workout in warmer, shallow water. * Monday, Wednesday, Friday from 10:30 a.m. 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, from 9 a.m. 10 a.m. Saturday, from 9:30 a.m. 10:30 a.m. This class is held in the lap pool for participants who desire a low-impact workout in cooler, deeper water. * Page 7 of 11

Tuesday & Thursday from 4 p.m. 5 p.m. The Youth Lap Swim Program provides instructional lap swimming for youth ages 5 thru 18 during the winter months. Participants must be able to swim 25 consecutive yards. The program is available from December 16 th to May 1 st. Thursday, from 9 a.m. 10 a.m. This specialized class will be held in the lap pool for those who desire a low-impact cardiovascular workout in deeper water while utilizing aqua jogging equipment such as belts and ankle resistance. * Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 4 p.m. 5 p.m. Masters Swimming is a program for serious swimmers, ages 18 and over, designed to improve stroke technique and build endurance. * Monday, Wednesday, & Friday from 10:30 a.m. 12:30 p.m. & Sunday: Noon 5 p.m. Instruction is tailored to the participant s goals and needs: from basic swim instruction to improving stroke efficiency and endurance. Private swim lessons are scheduled on an individual basis by the Recreation Department s Aquatics Staff. * Monday, Wednesday, & Friday from 10:30 a.m. 12:30 p.m. & Sunday: Noon 5 p.m. Instruction is tailored to the participant s goals and needs: from basic to advanced shallow water aerobics, deepwater aerobics and aqua jogging. Private swim lessons are scheduled on an individual basis by the Recreation Department s Aquatics Staff. * *Aquatic programs require that the air temperature is greater than 65 degrees and the water temperature greater than 80 degrees. **For the health and safety of our guests, the pool is closed when the air temperature is less than 60 degrees.
