May 2015 Research Briefs from Institutional Research Findings Stemming from Career Expo High School Counselor Survey Spring 2015 Means of Assessment Members of the Counseling Department partnered with the Office of Institutional Research to develop a survey designed to obtain feedback from high school counselors on various aspects of Chaffey s Career Expo. The resulting survey was made up of scaled items (e.g., Strongly Agree Strongly Disagree), closed-ended items (e.g., Yes or No), and open-ended questions. Paper copies were disseminated to high school counselors attending the event. A total of 42 high school counselors completed the survey. Findings Table 1 shows the relative agreement with statements concerning various aspects of the event. Reported responses were on a basis of a four-point scale (1 = Strongly Disagree; 4 = Strongly Agree). As is shown in Table 1, respondents reported being able to clearly identify the academic or student support programs on the basis of the display tables used for the event (Mean Response = 3.79). In addition, they reported that the expo: (a) helped them become aware of Chaffey s academic programs (Mean Response = 3.85), (b) helped them better understand careers and occupations (Mean Response = 3.79), and (c) helped them better understand the benefits of student support services (Mean Response = 3.62). Table 2 shows respondents relative satisfaction with respect to various logistical aspects of the event. Responses were measured on a four-point scale (1 = Very Dissatisfied; 4 = Very Satisfied). As illustrated in Table 2, respondents were satisfied with the various aspects inquired about, particularly the check-in and welcome experience (Mean Response = 3.95) and the campus facilities tour (Mean Response = 3.93). Table 3 illustrates the different academic and student support programs that respondents reported visiting; respondents listed a variety of programs. Table 4 indicates respondents global perspective of the event, including how satisfied they were with the display tables and whether they would recommend Chaffey College to their students. Over 97% of respondents were satisfied with the display tables and over 87% percent felt that the time span of the event was just right. In addition, all respondents indicated that they would recommend Chaffey College to students and over 89% reported that the expo influenced their decision to recommend the college to students. Table 5 illustrates the feedback from respondents reporting that the scheduled day and time (Wednesday from 11:00AM to 2:00PM) was not convenient. Table 6 shows the feedback from respondents about whether they would attend the event if it was held in the fall semester; most respondents reported September and October as favorable months during which to attend the event. Table 7 shows the aspects of the expo that respondents identified as liking best; while wide-ranging responses were offered, most pointed out that they particularly enjoyed the tour. Table 8 illustrates the aspects of the expo that respondents identified as liking least; the most commonly raised point was with respect to walking.

Over 97% of respondents reported being satisfied with the experience at the display tables. Moreover, as illustrated in Table 9, all respondents reported being either very satisfied (86.8%) or moderately satisfied (13.2%) with the expo. Table 10 lists additional input respondents had to offer concerning the even; the majority of comments were positive in nature. Any questions should be directed to the Office of Institutional Research at: (909) 652-6464 or send an email request to giovanni.sosa@chaffey.edu Table 1 The Self-Reported Feedback Concerning Various Aspects of the Career Expo Item 1. As always, chaffey does an outstanding job articulating with the high school counselors! I actually visited all the tables at the expo. I was impressed with the knowledge of the ambassadors who were enthusiastic and energetic. My only observation: the expo needs more space. 7. Table 8 Open-Ended Comments Concerning the Aspects of the Career Expo or Campus Tour Respondents Liked Least (Total Responses = 20) 1. All great 2. All was great 3. Auto 4. Broadcasting 5. Career expo - small area to speak with reps, no sport team rep 6. Career expo was a bit crowded with all of us beginning at the same time 7. Expo part 8. I did like that it was outside, but it was difficult to hear the person speaking (perhaps more speakers set in different location would help). I also wished that more info/updates were given about this upcoming year. I know that this was more of a career expo and that is probably why we did not hear from the services that are offered at chaffey, but i wish that they had presented, sometimes we need the human touch and not just a pamphlet. 9. I liked it all. 10. I particularly did not mind walking all around campus, but i know for some it was difficult. I noticed in my group, some did not finish the tour because they were "too tired". 11. Liked it all. 12. More breaks during the tour would be great 13. No credit for walking - great exercise 14. Somewhat long walk around campus 15. The speaker at the lunch area were hard to hear, it was to open and the sound got lost in the openness of the area. 16. The stairs (lol) 17. The terrain 18. The walking 19. The walking, only because i was having difficulty with my knees at the time. On any other day it would have been fine. 20. The walking...just kidding, all great
