Gooch Mark Plummer Jay Copeland ALR Our legion post had very exciting and successful events in the months of July and august. The 4 th of July parade and cookout was well attended and colorful. The charity golf tournament was held at the end of July. We were financially successful and will know in the next month the amount of funding for the Sailor and Soldiers Home and the scholarship. The new venue worked out extremely well with 21 foursomes. Thank you to all the volunteers, donors, players and staff at Brookshire golf club. Kudos to Mary, the staff, and the bartenders for making the evening so special. Next year the 25 th annual golf tournament will again be held at Brookshire on Friday 22 nd of July. Some good news, by the end of August a smoke removal system will be installed in the bar. Our building fund has paid for this and the next project is to replace the door on the west side of the bar and an entry way installed to protect the new door and frame. Lorie Rose has resigned her position. I would like to take this opportunity to thank her for all of her dedicated services to our Legion Post over the many years. Our food service manager has hired her replacement. Many great events are scheduled for the remaining of August and through September. ALR cookout, SAL dinners in September, October, and November are scheduled. There will be karaoke every other Saturday starting September 5 th. September 12 th a hog roast and band will perform outside on the deck and in the parking lot. The last Sunday of August the SAL is holding a work project to repair and clean up the horseshoe pit area to the west of the deck. Volunteers would be appreciated. As part as the Legion outreach, both the boys and girls rugby teams, soccer leagues, and Boy Scout jamboree will be held in our back field this coming year. Reminder that all dinners are ordered through the server NOT from the cook in the kitchen. Again thank you to all volunteers who helped make improvements to our post and have made all of our activities successful. I welcome your input, questions, and comments my cell phone is 316-1919 and my email address boilerbob1946@att.net. Page 3 Pos t News HVAF (Hoosier Veterans Assistance Foundation) Volum e 4, Iss ue 1 Things are usually a little quite with HVAF through the summer. Earlier, the Auxiliary put together Welcome Kits to be distributed when the men and/or women come to HVAF. We stuffed small laundry bags with immediate necessities such as toothpaste, toothbrush, soap, shampoo, razor, shaving cream, sewing kit, deodorant, etc. We also provided a $10 gift card from Kroger. These kits seem to have made a hit. We are starting/continuing to make our plans for the Holiday Breakfast in December. We will again be putting together the backpacks filled with needs/goodies. The Veteran s love them and thank us each time we visit. We will definitely be asking for the annual cookie donation so watch next month s newsletter for any requests/help we need from our membership. Another service HVAF provides to veterans, each Tuesday and Thursday from 12:30-3:30 p.m., any homeless veteran can come to HVAF to receive day-to-day necessities, such as toothpaste, brush, soap and other basic needs. HVAF also goes to shelters and on the street to meet the immediate necessities of our homeless Veterans. HVAF s current urgent needs are the following items: Vienna sausages, peanut butter, canned fruit, can openers and men s underwear (all sizes, briefs or boxers). As always, they can use any non-perishable food items. Also, keep in mind winter is coming and long johns, gloves, stocking hats and winter coats are always in need. (For you garage sale/church sale members, this is a great place to look for a coat. I have found several very nice coats, especially at church sales) Thank you for your continued support. Our Veterans and the Auxiliary appreciate your help. Judy Holmes American Legion Post #155 HVAF Committee Chairman (317) 769-5370 (317)846-0001 American Legion Post 155 in Carmel will have a volunteer clean-up day on SUNDAY, AUGUST 30th at 10:00am. We will concentrate on cleaning up the horseshoe pit area and behind the garage. All members of our post are invited to help out. Let's help beautify our post. JOHN L. HESS JENNIFER M.
