A university should be a place of light, of liberty, and of learning. Benjamin Disraeli Thanks to the continuing support of dedicated alumni and friends, Hofstra University has become a prestigious, world-renowned institution of higher learning. Founded in 1935 as Long Island s first coeducational college, Hofstra University now offers 130 undergraduate and 140 graduate programs of study to more than 13,300 students. Our commitment to excellence, pursuit of academic freedom and achievement, and desire to attract the brightest students and the most qualified faculty are goals on which we will not compromise. To maintain these objectives we need the support of people like you who understand the personal importance and professional value of a university education. Your generosity allows Hofstra to provide financial assistance to deserving and qualified students and to attract the nation s most talented students and faculty. Hofstra has always strived to provide our students with an unparalleled education. We especially take pride in helping those who have the desire and ability but lack the financial resources to pursue a Hofstra education. Your generosity also allows Hofstra to bring respected faculty to campus to share their knowledge and experience with our student body. What giving opportunities are available? ANNUAL SCHOLARSHIPS ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIPS ENDOWED LECTURESHIPS ENDOWED VISITING CHAIRS ENDOWED DISTINGUISHED PROFESSORSHIPS ENDOWED ACADEMIC CHAIRS At Hofstra, donors are valued and recognized. Once a scholarship or endowment is established, it is listed in the Hofstra University Undergraduate Bulletin or Graduate Studies Bulletin, depending on the criteria for awarding. These Bulletins are distributed to thousands of current and prospective students each year. Scholarship donors are notified of the scholarship recipients and are recognized at an Annual Scholarship Luncheon, where they have the opportunity to meet the students who benefit greatly from their generosity. Those who establish a Visiting Chair, Distinguished Professorship or Academic Chair are recognized at a special convocation celebrating the formal investiture of the selected faculty member. We hope one of the many opportunities described in this brochure assists you in meeting your philanthropic goals. SCHOLARSHIPS AND ENDOWMENTS 1

SCHOLARSHIPS The direction in which education starts a man will determine his future life. Plato NAMED ANNUAL SCHOLARSHIPS Named Annual Scholarships enable you to make a tangible difference in the future of a deserving Hofstra student. A minimum donation of $2,500 is required to establish a Named Annual Scholarship. The full amount of the gift is awarded during the academic year in which it is established. As the donor, you may name and establish the criteria for awarding the scholarship, within University guidelines. The following are two existing Named Annual Scholarships: Marlene and Jay Mendelsohn Scholarship - awarded to two qualified students (one male and one female) who by perseverance and dedication overcame adversity to attain academic excellence at the conclusion of their freshman year. Newsday Dennis P. Bell Memorial Scholarship and Internship - awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need and scholastic achievement to a junior or senior majoring in print journalism. The recipient must be a resident of Nassau or Suffolk County and maintain a 3.0 cumulative grade point average. NAMED ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIPS Named Endowed Scholarships are established in perpetuity to support Hofstra students. This opportunity enables you to provide scholarships to talented, dedicated students for years to come. The minimum gift required to establish a Named Endowed Scholarship is $25,000. Investment income from an endowment provides scholarship funds for one or more deserving students. As the donor, you may name and establish the criteria for awarding the scholarship, within University guidelines. Our Named Endowed Scholarships include: Dr. and Mrs. Anthony Reidlinger Endowed Academic Scholarship - awarded on the basis of scholastic achievement and demonstrated financial need to a qualified junior or senior undergraduate student majoring in chemistry or natural science. Douglas Hoyne Endowed Memorial Scholarship - awarded to a deserving graduate special education major who displays caring, compassion and sensitivity; expresses commitment and dedication to the profession; focuses on a student s potential rather than his or her weaknesses; and fosters a loving, structured and challenging environment. 2 Scholarship donors are invited by Hofstra University President Stuart Rabinowitz to meet their scholarship recipients at an Annual Scholarship Luncheon. 3

ENDOWED DISTINGUISHED ACADEMIC SCHOLARSHIPS You will make a significant, positive impact on the life of a gifted and deserving Hofstra student by establishing an Endowed Distinguished Academic Scholarship. Such scholarships strengthen Hofstra s ability to attract the best and brightest students and enhance our reputation as a leading institution of higher education. This opportunity enables you to align your philanthropic goals with one of society s most important priorities nurturing well-educated and involved citizens. The minimum gift required to establish an Endowed Distinguished Academic Scholarship is $500,000. Investment income from this endowment provides a full-tuition merit scholarship to a student of superior academic standing and exceptional talent. As the donor, you may name and establish the criteria for awarding the scholarship, within University guidelines. These scholarships are renewable each year for four years, provided the student maintains an excellent academic record. Our Endowed Distinguished Academic Scholarships include: Henry J. Viscardi Jr. Endowed Distinguished Academic Scholarship - established to honor Henry J. Viscardi Jr. and awarded to students with physical disabilities. Marlene Meiselman Schoen Endowed Distinguished Academic Scholarship - established to honor the memory of Howard H. Born and awarded to a student of outstanding academic achievement. Hofstra s scholarship program is flexible and varied enough to enable you to fulfill your philanthropic goals. If requested, a payment schedule to fulfill a pledge for an endowed scholarship or special endowment may be arranged with the Office for Development. What nobler employment, or more valuable to the state, than that of the man who instructs the rising generation? ACADEMIC ENDOWMENTS ENDOWED LECTURESHIPS If you are interested in a particular field of study, you may wish to fund an Endowed Lectureship. This type of endowment allows Hofstra to bring to campus distinguished scholars and members of the business and professional communities to speak on topics that relate to the University s academic offerings. The lectures are well publicized, and the donor s name is associated with the lectures financed by the endowment. The Endowed Lectureship is established in perpetuity for a minimum gift of $100,000. This opportunity enables you to play a central role in cultivating a dialogue on significant issues. Our Endowed Lectureships include: Donald J. Sutherland University Lecture in the Liberal Arts - established in 1998 to bring to Hofstra an outstanding speaker in the area of liberal arts. Dorothy and Elmer Kirsch Endowment Fund for the Hofstra Cultural Center - established in 1997 to support the Hofstra Cultural Center s programs on Judaism. ENDOWED VISITING CHAIRS Cicero An Endowed Visiting Chair invests in a program that enriches the educational process by adding new insights to an academic department. By endowing a Visiting Chair, you allow Hofstra to bring distinguished scholars to the University for limited residences. These scholars add great prestige to our academic departments and broaden our students learning experiences. As a result, you will help encourage scholarship and inspire future academic leaders. An Endowed Visiting Chair may be established in perpetuity for a minimum gift of $1 million. As the donor, you may name and choose the field of study for the Visiting Chair, within University guidelines. 4 SCHOLARSHIPS AND ENDOWMENTS 5

ENDOWED DISTINGUISHED PROFESSORSHIPS Among the highest honors that can be bestowed on an academician is the awarding of an Endowed Distinguished Professorship. Regarded with great esteem throughout the academic world, these positions enable Hofstra to recruit prominent faculty or to recognize an outstanding faculty member. By recognizing renowned and preeminent academics, the Endowed Distinguished Professorship enhances Hofstra s prestige while funding the research and discovery necessary to foster the University s reputation. Through a minimum gift of $500,000, a donor may name and establish an Endowed Distinguished Professorship in perpetuity. The endowment provides a stipend to supplement the salary of the distinguished professor and allows the professor to engage in professional pursuits, affording the opportunity for you to make a lasting impact on scholarly endeavors. Our Endowed Distinguished Professorships include: Harry H. Wachtel Distinguished Teaching Professorship for the Study of Nonviolent Social Change - established in 1998 in memory of Harry H. Wachtel, a longtime civil rights activist who served as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. s lawyer and one of his closest advisers. Its purpose is to promote teaching, research and curriculum development in the areas of nonviolent social change and peaceful conflict resolution. Donald E. Axinn Endowed Distinguished Professorship in Ecology and Conservation - established in 1987 by gifts from Donald E. Axinn, a Hofstra alumnus, trustee emeritus and real estate developer. Under this professorship, a program of public awareness in ecology and conservation is developed with special applications to the Long Island environment. Endowments are the lifeblood of academic institutions. Through your generous gift, you can help Hofstra University maintain its status as a dynamic institution of educational excellence. Next in importance to freedom and justice is popular education, without which neither freedom nor justice can be permanently maintained. James A. Garfield ENDOWED ACADEMIC CHAIRS An Endowed Academic Chair is the highest honor an academician can receive. The establishment of an Endowed Academic Chair permits Hofstra to enhance its faculty with preeminent scholars and to advance the quality of education available to Hofstra students. For a minimum gift of $1.5 million, an Academic Chair may be named by the donor and established in any of the schools or colleges of the University: Frank G. Zarb School of Business Hofstra College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Honors College New College Saturday College School for University Studies School of Communication School of Education and Allied Human Services School of Law University College for Continuing Education Our Endowed Academic Chairs include: Augustus B. Weller Endowed Academic Chair - endowed in 1963 to bring an outstanding teacher and scholar to the University. It was established by friends and admirers of Mr. Weller in recognition of his accomplishments as a Hofstra trustee, banker, educator and dedicated community servant. The Chair is currently held by prominent economist Dr. Irwin L. Kellner. 6 SCHOLARSHIPS AND ENDOWMENTS 7

WAYS OF GIVING GIFTS OF CASH The most common form of giving is a gift of cash. Most individuals can deduct 100 percent of the cash gift in the year it is made. APPRECIATED SECURITIES A gift of appreciated securities, such as stocks or bonds, can provide exceptional tax savings on capital gains in addition to the income tax deduction associated with a charitable donation. The easiest way to donate a security is by electronic transfer from your broker to Hofstra s account. For transfer instructions, please call the Office for Development. MATCHING GIFTS You may be able to double or even triple the amount of your gift to Hofstra University if you work for an organization that will match your gift. Please inquire with your organization s human resource department to determine if your organization has a matching gift program. REAL ESTATE The tax benefits of appreciated real estate can be identical to those of appreciated securities a deduction for the full fair market value of the property and elimination of the tax on any capital gain. DEFERRED GIFTS Another way to establish the endowment opportunities described in this brochure is through a bequest or deferred gift. Although the endowment will not be established until the University receives the donation, you can name and determine the criteria in advance to ensure that your wishes are met. If you would like to learn more about bequests, a donation of life insurance or how to establish a charitable remainder trust or charitable gift annuity, please contact the Office for Development. OTHER GIFT OPPORTUNITIES Hofstra University welcomes gifts-in-kind, such as artwork, books for our libraries, or computer equipment.
