Housatonic Detachment #1129 Volume 8 Issue 3 March 2010 Welcome to Housatonic Detachment 1129 s Newsletter A number of people have filled out the Member Info sheet. If you haven t, please go to the last page of this newsletter and fill out the information requested and mail it in or bring to our next meeting. It will help us plan future functions. This month, I m dropping the USMC History section since I ve been told that everyone has seen the various months in past newsletters. I also need to make room for other things that I ve been requested to include in the newsletter. To keep the cost of mailing out paper copies of the newsletter, I have to keep the number of pages down so the envelope doesn t weigh over an ounce which would add an additional stamp. For those of you that do the internet, I will be dropping AT&T for my primary email address soon. My new primary email address will probably be MCL1129@aol.com. I ll send out a notice from my new email when I do the switch. Paymaster Request: When you make out a check to the detachment, please make it out to M arine Corps League as that is the primary name on our account. And, even if the check is for a Quartermaster order, make out the check to the M arine Corps League as quartermaster merchandise is paid for by the detachment funds. If you are reimbursing me for something that I personally fronted money for, make the check out to John LaBrecque. Quartermaster Stuff Ribbon Bars: I have a number of uniform ribbon bars. Anyone that needs an upgrade can simply exchange their old ribbon bar for a new one or pay for a new one. Membership applications can be downloaded and Inside This Issue 1 Welcome 2 Commandant s Column 3 Detachment News & Info 4 2010 Events 5 Pictures

2 Housatonic Det. # 1129 printed out from our website at: http://www.orgsites.com/ct/housatonic/index.html For those that are computer challenged, you can contact me to send you some or pick them up at one of our meetings. Just as an FYI, I usually have copies of our applications and rituals at every meeting. Just ask me for one if you want any copy. Some people have asked me where to get embroidery done locally (Caps, jackets, etc.). A good place is: All League Embroidery 171 Bruce Ave Stratford, CT 06615 203-377-7215 The above info is the updated address and name info of the same place we ve had in previous newsletters. They do a decent job with our MCL caps and give us a good price. Announcements and other info on our detachment can be found on the Marine Corps League Announcement Forum on http://www.yellowfootprints.com ; our website at http://www.orgsites.com/ct/housatonic/index.html and on our webpage on National s website at http://www.mcleague.com/mdp/userpages/housato NIC-914.php We also have a listing on the Department of Connecticut s website at http://www.mcldeptct.org/pages/detachments8.html Jack LaBrecque Web Sergeant. My email address is: JITB@att.net Other contact info is: Jack LaBrecque, 2288 Main Street, Stratford, CT 06615 (203) 380-0303 Commandant s Column I have several things to share with you this month. As previously communicated to you & discussed at our Feb 8 meeting, we will try to publish in each newsletter a list of upcoming events including VFW functions. This list will also be distributed at each monthly meeting. This will allow you to plan, mark your calenders & make arrangements to attend those events that you wish to attend. Our Formal Marine Mess Night of May15 is fast approaching. I would like to see a good turnout from our Detachment. To clear up some questions & concerns: tickets are$75.00- {not cheap but fair for what you get}, an outstanding meal, all amenities, ALL beverages & an outstanding experience that will increase your pride in being a Marine. Formal means MCL blazer, or jacket & tie, or tuxedo if you wish. The Event is for Marines (male & female), Associates, Friends who have served in other branches of the service or have a special respect for the Corps. Spouses & significant others should be deferred to Spousal Appreciation Night. I guarantee the event will not disappoint. See Jack Dougherty for tickets. Please purchase early. The consideration of doing a "Rose Day" as a fundraiser appeared to be favorably received at the Feb 8 meeting. We will discuss this further at our March meeting. Things you should know at this point are: 1) We will do this in teams of 2 or more people 2) Volunteers & spouses are welcome & teams pick their own location. My wife, Barbara & I will do a shopping center in Monroe. 3) The time commitment other than planning is only 4-6 hours maximum on 1 day 4) We will give out Marine Roses for donations, the proceeds to go mainly to support our deployed troops & wounded warriors 5) Rose Day will be Sat Sept 11 which is Patriots Day or on a date determined by the membership @ the March meeting. Any team may go out earlier if the team so wishes. 6) I would like to have a list of teams by & at the March meeting. Please think about it & talk to each other 7) We will try to have a typical display set up at our April or May meeting. I will be our "guest speaker" at our March meeting. The Meeting format will change a bit. We will do our raffle early in the meeting, tickets being sold before the meeting. At the end of our regular meeting, coffee will be served & I will do a 20 minute talk on: "Battle Fatigue, Vietnam Syndrome, PTSD" The most common & often the most devastating combat injury". I will discuss cause, diagnosis & treatments. A handout will be available to those who choose not to stay. Semper Fi! Jim Alexander
