Grants in each category are awarded as a result of a competitive process. The number of grants and the maximal funding levels are subject to availability of funds in a given fiscal year. For illustrative purposes and assuming an unchanged current research budget, it is anticipated that Telfer School will award up to 5 Research Grants, up to 8 Student Research Grants, up to 4 Research Event Grants, and up to 2 Back on Track Grants.
Research Grant This grant is designed to support Telfer School faculty with active research programs. Its goal is to provide financial support for a research project that will result in: An application for funding to tri-council agencies or others (within 2 years since notice of award), or Submission to any of the journals from the FT45 list or top journals in the applicant s research field. An applicant can request up to $12,000 for a research project lasting up to two years. Knowing that availability of time to conduct research is one of the factors impacting research productivity, an applicant can also request for Research Protected Time (RPT) that is equivalent of one 3 credit course release. Total number of the RPTs available in a given year is subject to approval by the Telfer School Dean. Each successful applicant is required to submit his or her research proposal again to the University of Ottawa Research Development Grant or the Interdisciplinary Research Group Funding Opportunity before release of the SMRG Research Grant. Once the Research Office receives a confirmation of such an application, the fund are made available. Applications can be submitted by full-time tenured and tenure-track faculty at the Telfer School of Management. The principal investigator is responsible for managing the funds according to the University of Ottawa and the Telfer School of Management policies and regulations. A principal investigator is eligible to be the recipient of only one Research Grant in a given academic year. Holding multiple grants as investigator and co-investigator: Each applicant is required to disclose all currently held sources of funding, including the amounts and research projects for which they were awarded funding. In the case of multiple grants, an applicant has to justify how requested funding is related to currently held grants. Requests for support of overlapping research projects are not eligible for funding. A request to extend the duration of funding beyond the original period needs to be made to the Telfer School Manager, Research Enterprise and, if granted, the extension will not exceed another full calendar year. A formal request must be made at least two months prior to the end of the grant period. This grant is not intended for pedagogical uses. The recipient has to provide a short report at the end of the grant period. This report should clearly state what was accomplished (submission to tri-council and/or to the FT45 or other top journal), and in a case when original goals were not achieved, an explanation of the reasons has to be provided. Reported results of the grant will have significant impact on future grating decisions. Each publication or presentation having been made possible through funding from the SMRG program has to explicitly acknowledge the support of the Telfer School of Management.
Student Research Grant This grant is intended for graduate students who are registered full-time in a graduate research program offered by the Telfer School of Management (currently MSc in Management, MSc in Health Systems, MSc in Electronic Business Technologies). The Student Research Grant has been created to support students in their thesis research. The value of the grant is a maximum of $4,000 for a duration of up to 1.5 years. This is intended for a student stipend and/or expenses related to the thesis research. Applications are submitted by full-time tenured and tenure-track faculty at the Telfer School of Management, with a graduate student being the co-applicant. The principal investigator is responsible for managing the funds according to the University of Ottawa and the Telfer School of Management policies and regulations. - The student must be registered full-time in a research-based graduate program offered by the Telfer School of Management and be supervised by a member of the Telfer faculty. - The research must lead to a thesis. - The thesis proposal should be presented and approve at the time of the application. - The graduate student is expected to work full time on their thesis research project. - In the case of a student not continuing and/or not registered on a full-time basis in the program, or in the case of the thesis submission or defense, any remaining funds will revert to the SMRG program. The faculty member is required to contact the Research Office with a written request (letter or email) to close the account. A request to extend the duration of this grant needs to be made to the Manager, Research Enterprise and, if granted, the extension will not exceed another full calendar year. A formal request must be made at least two months prior to the end of the grant period. Supervisors who have external funding will be expected to provide a top-up contribution equivalent to 50% of the grant awarded (some exceptions may apply). Request for funding has to be submitted through the online portal by the supervisor. A graduate student is eligible to receive the Student Research Grant only once for a given program of a study. This grant is not intended for pedagogical uses. Thesis and possibly academic publication or presentations.
Research Event Grant An applicant can request up to $3,000 towards the costs of organizing an academic event hosted by the Telfer School of Management and being of international (high preference) or national scope. Each successful applicant is required to submit his/her proposal again to the University of Ottawa Conference/Workshop on Campus Opportunity before reception of the SMRG Research Event Grant. Once a confirmation of the application is received by the Research Office, the funds from the Research Event Grant will be made available. Only full-time tenured or tenure-track faculty at the Telfer School of Management can submit applications. The event organizer is principal investigator and he/she is responsible for the management of the funds according to the University of Ottawa and the Telfer School of Management policies and regulations. A faculty member is eligible to be the recipient of only one Research Event Grant in a given academic year. The grant is awarded at most 1 year prior to when the event is scheduled and cannot be extended. This grant is not intended to support events of pedagogical nature. Activity report describing the event and its impact. Academic event.
Back on Track Grant From time to time, situations may arise that make it difficult for a faculty member to maintain the expected intensity of his/her research. Research productivity may vary during periods of pregnancy or early childcare, whether or not a formal leave of absence was taken, or as a result of other personal circumstances. Administrative leave, disability and other situations may also result in delays. The Back on Track Grant is intended to provide financial assistance to help kick-start a stalled research program. An applicant can request up to $12,000 for a research project lasting up to two years. Knowing that availability of time to conduct research is one of the factors impacting research productivity, an applicant can also request for Research Protected Time (RPT) that is equivalent to one 3 credit course release. The total number of RPT s available in a given year is subject to approval by the Telfer School Dean. It is expected that the results of research enabled by this grant will lead to improved research productivity in terms of publications in academic journals and refereed conference proceedings, which ultimately will: 1) improve the promotion dossier, 2) help to develop future application for tri-council grants, and/or 3) allow the applicant to become an active researcher. The request for funding has to clearly demonstrate how this grant will be used to kick start the applicant s research program. If an RPT is also requested, it is necessary to explain in detail how having protected time will help with obtaining results from the research. Full-time tenured and tenure-track faculty at the Telfer School of Management can submit applications. The principal investigator is responsible for managing the funds according to the University of Ottawa and the Telfer School of Management policies and regulations. To be eligible for this grant, the applicant must show that their research productivity has been significantly constrained. A faculty member is eligible to be the recipient of the Back on Track Grant only once in his/her academic career. A request to extend the duration of this grant has to be made to the Manager, Research Enterprise and, if granted, the extension will not exceed another full calendar year. A formal request must be made at least two months prior to the end of the grant period. This grant is not intended for pedagogical uses. Detailed report outlining the results of the research supported by this grant, including copies of the papers submitted (or published) in academic journals and refereed conference proceedings. Reported results of the grant will have significant impact on faculty member s eligibility for any other source of the SMRG funding.
Application Process and Funding Decisions Request for funding has to be submitted to the Telfer School of Management Research Office by the deadline using the dedicated online form. Only one copy is required with the principal investigator s original signature on the application form. The relevant SMRG Form is available in the Research section of the Telfer School of Management website under the tab Resources. The username is: leadership and the password is: support. Once logged in, the form is under the tab Internal Funding, Telfer School of Management Grants. Applications are reviewed by the members of the Telfer School of Management Research Committee. If none of the committee members have research expertise in the area pertaining to an application, a domain expert (internal or external) will be asked to help in assessing the quality of the application. Priority is given to the applicants who are not current holders of a SMRG Research Grant. The Research Committee provides funding recommendations to the Vice-Dean (Research) who makes the final decision, taking into account the availability of funds to support research and the Telfer School of Management research priorities. The Research Office communicates the decision and feedback to all applicants within one month of the deadline of each competition. Important Aspects to Consider in Developing a Budget Funds must be used to cover the direct costs of the research for which they were awarded, and the benefits should be directly attributable to the grant. The funds must be used effectively and economically, and the expenses must be essential for the research for which the funds were awarded. The budget should include a detailed and fully justified list of items constituting eligible expenses: Compensation-related expenses Research assistant(s) and research associate(s). The tasks, expected deliverables, and timeline must be specified. Research protected time A detailed and informative description has to be included with a request. It is the applicant s onus to convince members of the Research Committee that the RPT, not funding, is necessary to obtain expected results. Equipment and supplies Equipment and supplies pertaining to the conducting of the research. Funds may be requested for the purchase of books, documentation, and software essential to the project but unavailable through the University s library system. These purchases remain the property of the Telfer School, but may remain with the principal investigator for as long as it is needed. When requesting equipment, it is required to include a brief explanation of the type of equipment required, justified in terms of what is already available at the Telfer School of Management. Cost of the computer equipment cannot exceed $2,000. Data acquisition and analysis Detailed quotes are required for projects, including translation and/or transcription costs, acquisition of databases, etc. directly related to the research.
Specifications For the SMRG Student Research: it is preferred, whenever possible, that the amount requested for the stipend will be paid in installments. Costs related to thesis research, including data collection, software, training and travel necessary to perform the research project, are allowed. Applicants have to detail all other sources of funding. For the SMRG Research Events: travel, student salaries, event planning, development of promotional material or event website are examples of eligible activities. For the SMRG Back on Track: student salaries, costs related to the conducting of the literature review, data collection and analysis, essential research supplies. Further details on eligible expenses can be found in the Tri-Agency Financial Administration Guide. The following expenses are not eligible for any of the SMRG grants: - Research conducted under contract with a public institution, private agency or firm; - Research required for the principal investigator or co-applicant to earn a degree, except in the case of research leading to a Master and/or Doctoral thesis of a student. - Funds for travel, except to cover data collection related to the project or, in the case of SMRG Student Research, travel necessary to conduct the thesis research, as determined by the thesis supervisor, or international initiative; - Contributions to the overhead; - Entertainment, costs of alcohol, business lunches and/or honoraria; - Costs associated with the development of courses; - Costs incurred before the grant is awarded. Note: Major budget modifications need to be approved by the Manager, Research Enterprise who may request permission from the Vice-Dean (Research). These requests have to be made in writing (letter or email) prior to incurring the proposed expense(s).
