Simple, they outsource to companies that do key word searches and filter down to a handful of resumes, ouch! The resume black-hole can be avoided if you have the right tools. An executive recruiter / headhunter can be one of these ways 3
How to identify an executive recruiter/headhunter Identifying an executive recruiter / headhunter usually happen one of two ways: The first way is they find you Job boards (assuming your updating you resumes weekly) LinkedIn (assuming profile is a strong one & lots of keywords) The second way is you find them Strong referral from a trusted friend or colleague User group referral Hunt & peck on LinkedIn Contact them after viewing one of their job post 4
Are exec recruiters / headhunters the same? Exec recruiters / headhunters have differences Executive recruiter usually have the following characteristics: Specialize & focus on management & higher executive level jobs Many times retained my a company through a contract Some have an exclusive agreement to sole-source job openings Headhunter can have the following characteristics: Can be contracted or freelance & focus on non-mgmt. jobs Freelancer s can troll job boards for job openings They will contact you if you match in their database / LinkedIn They may assume they can submit your resume but, opening could be exclusively source or by contract only They may have no more pull then you submitting into the black-hole Many headhunters can be great but, you need to vet them! 5
How should you interact? Interactions with exec recruiters / headhunters They are not your buddies so keep it professional Keep your guard up and don t share anything that could be perceived as negative Interact with them like your interviewing with them They have one allegiance and that s to their paying client Recruiters are not coaches ; however, A good recruiter should give you a good lay of the land prior to your interview so you can prepare appropriately If they don t offer up the inside scoop ask them for it! Request them for customer feedback from your interview for continuous improvement of your interviewing skills 6
Should you work with more than 1 exec recruiters / headhunters? It is strongly recommended that you work with multiple exec recruiters / headhunters; however: Choose them carefully because: Two of your recruiters could be competing for the same job opening Whoever submits your resume first is the winner since usually your resume can only be submitted once The recruiter who lost may have the inside track with the customer s HR department and now you lost that advantage Some exec recruiters / headhunters will not work with you if your working with another recruiter so again, pick carefully If a recruiter calls you out of the blue for a great job match just be careful and ask questions in regards to their relationship to the companies HR department & if they are exclusive 7
