June 2015 Friends and Family of Dianella Hostel It was great to see so many residents join in on the special morning tea on 18th May to say thank you to the Masonic Lodge for their generous donation that goes towards our bus outings. I know that many of you love to get out into your community, to visit familiar places and bump into old friends. Thanks to Anne who was up early to make a very 'moorish' batch of scones complete with jam and cream. Together with the cream sponges and fruit cake I think a few of you were not very hungry by lunch time. Let Mel and Anne know if there are any particular places of interest that are on your wish list. I know they will be happy to support you as much as they possibly can. It seems winter has come before we were prepared. Still lots of activities planned for the winter months so there will be plenty to do. The garden out the back will be getting a makeover from the wonderful help of the Men s Shed and School children. So watch out for updates and changes. Friendly pets welcome Almost everyone loves animals and for residents of Dianella this is no exception. Being able to hold, pat and even observe a pet can be very enjoyable and relaxing. If you have a clean and well behaved pet and an occasional hour to spare we would welcome a visit to spend some time with residents. Your pet will need to be on a leash and it is also important that they do not jump up on residents (as the skin of older persons can be fragile). If you are interested speak to a staff member you will discuss it with you further. Sharing mealtimes at Dianella - you are welcome. Families and friends are encouraged to join residents at mealtimes. Sharing a meal time together is a time honoured tradition of family life and you are very welcome to continue this at Dianella /Caladenia. Join us in the dining room or arrange to use the more private areas of Dinella to chat and eat. There is a small cost associated with the meal (e.g. soup $2.50; sandwiches $4.00; Salad plate $6.00; Main meal $6.00; yoghurt $2.50; sweets $2.50). To ensure availability you are asked to ring prior to 10 a.m. to order a meal). As the financial administration of meals is managed directly by hospital administration meals ordered by family members will be directly billed to residents accounts. M AY 20 15 Page 5
Resident s Meeting - 2nd Friday of the Month One of the forums in which residents, families and friends can have their say about any issues of concern at Dianella is through Friday Forum meeting on the 2nd Friday of the month at 10:30am. At our latest meeting in residents expressed their fondness for Les and Lindsey who recently passed away and wanted to send their condolences to their friends and family. They will both be missed here at Dianella. As usual we discussed activities enjoyed last month, and both those planned for the coming month, as well as other areas and activities of interest that resident are particularly keen to pursue in the coming period of time. A few of our men discussed wanting to do a brewery tour and we have been able to organise this for July... so watch out for the 17th July when we will be attending the Tooborac Pub. This pub has its own brewery and we re sure there will be quite a bit of tasting going on that day! Aged care complaint system We encourage an "open door approach which invites residents to share their concerns with staff. Many people feel uncomfortable about doing this and fear negative consequences of raising issues. However, residents and relatives can be assured that we see complaints or negative feedback as an opportunity to improve the care and services provided. Complaints do not have to be in writing. What can you do if you have a complaint? Tell the staff Tell the Unit Manager (Bernie Lavars) Tell the Director of Nursing (Jenny Salkeld) Complete a facility feedback form, available from the front foyer, or ask a staff member for one. If you don't feel comfortable doing this, or aren't happy with the response you can contact the Aged Care Complaints Scheme directly on 1800 550 552. PLEASE HELP US KEEP OUR RESIDENTS SAFE! If you have been visiting Dianella could you please make sure the doors click back into the locked position when you leave.
