Page Three February 24, 2019 CATHOLIC SERVICES APPEAL 2019 The 2019 CSA will be conducted throughout the diocese on March 3, 2019. You may wonder if this is a good time to conduct our annual diocesan Catholic Services Appeal. But the truth is we must. The church needs your help to remain focused on Christ and the needs of the people of God. Bishop Lawrence Persico personally assures us that donations to the 2019 CSA will not be used- - in any way- - to fund the legal expenses of the diocese related to the Pennsylvania grand jury investigation on clergy sex abuse or to provide settlements for sexual abuse victims. The CSA is essential to helping the Diocese of Erie fulfill its mission to evangelize, educate, serve, proclaim the Word and celebrate the sacraments. Your participation is essential to the success of the CSA as well as to the health of our parish. Please join other Catholics from across the 13 counties of our diocese in supporting this important appeal. Every CSA donation also brings us closer to being able to complete our own parish project, which will be for the Landscaping of the Front of the Parish Center. No gift is too small, but please give as generously as you can. FAMILY HONOR ~ will be presenting Real Love & Real Life, a chastity program series at ECCHS on Mondays, March 11, 18 & 25, 2019. 7:00 to 9:15 p.m. Real Love & Real Life is for parents with your 7 th or 8 th grade son or daughter. This Family Honor program includes communicating effectively in families; respecting the gift of our sexuality and the amazing power we have to give life; discusses other topics all teens are facing, such as peer pressure and avoiding risky behaviors. This is an incredible opportunity to spend quality time with your teen, and open the door to communication on some really important issues. To register or find out more about this program, call Laurey Kraus 781-6746. CLEANING YOUR CLOSETS? Please save any local school, Steelers, Pirates, or Penguins t-shirts and or sweatshirts for a stitching project to benefit the Catholic Elementary School s Christmas Store. We would also appreciate donations of fiberfill to complete the project. Drop off at the St. Marys Catholic Elementary School office by April 30. Thank you all so much! Home Furnishings, Serta Mattresses, Flooring Sales and Installations (814)781-1715~ 125 Arch St. St. Marys www.arthearyandsonsfurniture.com The limitless love of God is what changes hearts; it's what changes the world. In 1983 a movie came out called "The Scarlet and the Black." It starred Gregory Peck and Christopher Plummer. The movie is based on a true story. It told the story of Monsignor Hugh O'Flaherty, an Irish priest who was working in the Vatican when Rome was occupied by Nazi troops during World War II. This monsignor organized a secret underground network to hide and protect allied soldiers who had been shot down and Jews who were being persecuted. The drama of the story comes from the ongoing battle of wits between Monsignor O'Flaherty and the German Commander of the occupied city, Colonel Herbert Kappal. The Vatican Monsignor outsmarts the Germans long enough to save thousands of lives, but many others are lost. When the allied forces reach the outskirts of the city and the Germans are penned in, Colonel Kappal arranges a secret meeting with Monsignor O'Flaherty. He asks the Monsignor to use his underground network to take the Colonel's wife and children to safety in Switzerland. The Monsignor is flabbergasted that this unscrupulous enemy would have the gall to ask for such a favor. He chastises him for his evil ways and walks off. Only later, when the Colonel is captured and under interrogation by the allies does he discover that the Monsignor had successfully saved his family. While the German colonel was under arrest in Rome for the remainder of the war, Monsignor O'Flaherty visited him regularly. Eventually, Colonel Kappal repented and was received into the Church. This is one example of the power of God's limitless love. He never gives up on us, because he knows that he can save us, change us, and lead us closer to him.
