Our Challenge Dear friends: The disciples were afraid to show their faces in public after Jesus crucifixion. They huddled in upper rooms with great uncertainty about what to do. In the first Pentecost event, the Spirit of God helped them overcome their confusions and fears by opening up a new chapter in their lives. They were given a new message, a new calling, and a new lease on life. This made the Pentecost event the birthday of the Church! In our passage this weekend from St. Paul s first letter to the early Christians in Corinth, Greece, he reminds them that the work of the Holy Spirit in the believer s life is essentially the work of God. Father, Son, and Spirit are one. The courage God gave Jesus is available to us because the same God, the one true God, works in all people of faith. The disciples uncertainty left them essentially powerless to undertake the mission Christ had given them. But there was a solution. The gift of the Holy Spirit gave them both the assurance and the confidence to go out into the world to spread the gospel to all they encountered. Biblical history reveals that they were faithful in fulfilling their calling. Remembering that a gift is a gift really helps keep things in perspective. This is not mine. I did not generate it, so I can take no pride in it. I have been gifted, and the only proper response for me is gratitude and stewardship. Paul was eager to say that spirituality is not one uniform experience, and he named nine different gifts to demonstrate the variety of the Spirit s manifestations. It is instructive that Paul mentioned the first two gifts which primarily involve the mind wisdom and knowledge. One day, so it is told, St Francis of Assisi found Brother Juniper in deep depression because he was so lacking in intelligence that he could not accomplish the simplest domestic tasks. Brother Juniper had actually tried to cook rabbits without first removing their skins. He felt he was useless to his Christian Brothers. Cheer up Brother Juniper, said Francis, Don t you know that you possess the greatest gift of all --- a loving heart? Let us bless each person s gifts then we shall be beautiful people. Have a good week! Love and prayers, Father Randy Cookies needed for St. Aloysius is sponsoring NeighborFest, a picnic on June 2 for our neighbors in Valley Park in collaboration with the District Attorney s Office, EBR Sherriff, BR Police Department, EBR Fire Department, Owen s Grocery, House of God Ministry, New Gideon Baptist Church, New Morning Star Baptist Church and Jesus Living Word Ministry as well as several St. Aloysius ministries. PARISH STAFF St. Aloysius Videos will help you find where God is Leading You! Check out the video below and other ministry videos on the website at http://church.aloysius.org/ministry-videos/ ARE YOU CALLED TO SERVE IN ST. VINCENT DE PAUL? Our St. Aloysius St. Vincent de Paul Home Visits program is a ministry of St. Aloysius parishioners who volunteer their heart, time and talent to assist those most in need throughout the geographic boundaries of our parish. Ten teams of SVdP volunteers (men and women) go out two by two on home visits to meet, pray and assist our neighbors in need of rent, utilities, food, clothing, etc. The time commitment needed for a team of two is approximately 4-5 hours once every 5 th week. This is a wonderful ministry for individual parishioners or a married couple who wishes to join in the same ministry as we go out two by two. For more information or to volunteer, please contact Kim Hardman at kbueche@ptpnla.brcoxmail.com or call 225-939-6962. Click the link here to watch Aeli Poydras, a fellow Vincentian, share with you a brief video on the ministry. The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is a year-round program at St. Aloysius that welcomes people to begin Inquiry at any time. The highlight of the year is the Easter Vigil, when adult Catechumens are baptized after a year of preparation and formation. Those baptized in another Christian tradition are also received by a Profession of Faith and Confirmation at Easter, as well as other points throughout the year. Recently, St. Aloysius celebrated the threshold Rites of Acceptance and Welcome for one Catechumen and two Candidates who have been meeting in our Wednesday evening Inquiry Sessions. Each was welcomed by name and received our promise of prayers and support. They are being joined by three more candidates in the coming weeks. Please continue to pray for our catechumen, Andrew Kolb, and our Candidates, Bailey Abendroth, Ethan Harp, David Post, Mackenzie Schild, and Gary Thornhill. And, because the RCIA program continues to grow, we need new Sponsors.
