September 2, 2008 Dear 56 Classmates, Widows, and Friends: REUNION REGISTRATION Fall Reunion October 10-12, 2008 The time has come. With this letter, you are receiving for the first time the registration materials. You will be able to review the necessary information and cost to attend our Fall Reunion, October 10-12, 2008. In addition to the registration forms, you also are receiving a review of the detailed reunion schedule (latest version). Please complete the registration materials as soon as you can. Please note that we are asking for your arrival and departure times and dates as well as lodging locations in order to identify to all attendees when classmates will be arriving and where they are staying. Thus far, the following classmates have confirmed their attendance: Steve Bailie Michael Bacon Jim Dunlap Tom Folsom Tom Goodman Bill Hanning Bob Hawley Randy Jones Chuck McPherson Jim Medland Dick Moore John Newman Bob Peck John Richards John Roberts Skip Ross Carl Russell Harry Schoger Ward Schryver Tom Shumaker Gordon Snow Bill Slemmons Chuck Sommer Andy Uncapher E. B. Vandiver Ron Yonover REUNION SCHEDULE DETAILS Friday, October 10 Registration will be open from 8:00 AM 5:00 PM in the Legion Memorial Building. For the golfers, there is nothing formally planned. However, you have several options which include Mystic Hills, the Pete Dye course on the south end of Lake Maxinkuckee, or the Academies course. Mystic Hills provides all the amenities for an enjoyable and reasonably priced round, while the Academies course is designed for walking and a more leisurely round. The Academies course is free for all alumni, as well as our visitors for our weekend.
We are free to visit classes all day Friday. If you have a particular instructor or subject matter in mind and wish to plan ahead, you should call Amy Davis in the alumni office and she will advise you accordingly. At 4:00 PM, we have been invited to enter Culver s Digital Vault. Vedettes, Roll Calls, Quills, alumni magazines, historic photographs, and many other historic documents are now available online. Academy Historian, Bob Hartman, will show us how to enter and use the vault. Friday evening, we will gather at The Homestead, 504 E Shore Drive, for our kickoff reception. Cocktails and very heavy hors d oeuvres will be served. The Homestead, which sits on a bluff high over Lake Maxinkuckee and with a beautiful view of the school, was built in the late 1800 s by the school s founder, Henry Harrison Culver. This will provide a wonderful backdrop for our opening event. Attire is casual. Saturday, October 11 Special arrangements have been made for our class to have breakfast at Café Max, the place to see and be seen in downtown Culver. In addition to an excellent meal, you will be treated to the owner s outstanding collection of Academy and town memorabilia. We will trundle back to campus for our morning programs, which begin with a class meeting. Immediately following, Head of Schools, John Buxton, and a group of student panelists from the Girls Academy and Corps of Cadets will join us for a conversation. There are a lot of moving parts at Culver, including several ambitious and interesting projects that the fall reunion committee thought would be enlightening for classmates and spouses to hear. So, facilities director, Jeff Kutch, will update us on those initiatives and take questions that may arise. We will have a fun, casual lunch lakeside in front of the Science Building. After lunch, a motorized tour has been scheduled so we can see the new initiatives firsthand and gain an understanding of how the campus master plan is evolving. An added bonus of this tour will be an informal leaf tour should autumn weather allow for it. There is a free time after the tour to relax and rejuvenate. We will take a breather before returning to campus for our class picture and our birthday celebration. We will wrap up any pending class business we may have after dinner and then hear from our keynote speaker, Dr. John Yeager, the Director of Culver s Center for Character Excellence. John is one of the most sought after presenters on campus, whether for education seminars around the country or speaking to Culver Clubs. I promise you will enjoy John and the opportunity to learn about this unique Culver program. Sunday, October 12 Like we did at our 50 th, we will gather for a casual, but filling, breakfast in Beason Hall. Join the group on your way out of town or between church services. 2
The Sunday highlight is the Garrison Parade and we have been invited to the take the review of the Corps. The Homestead The Homestead, mentioned earlier as the site of our Friday evening kickoff event, also will serve as our weekend headquarters. Everyone is welcome to drop by throughout the day Friday and Saturday when we don t have specifically scheduled activities. Cold drinks, a comfortable seat, a beautiful view, and even college football on Saturday will be available. Accommodation Options - http://culveralumni.culver.org There are numerous accommodation options in the area, including traditional hotel chains, bed and breakfasts, and private homes with rooms for rent. Consult the enclosed roster of accommodations for phone numbers and locations. One of the best ways to enjoy a class reunion at Culver is to join together in the renting of a lake cottage or private home. Access to those are via the rental agents listed on the enclosed accommodations sheet. The Culver Inn Motel On-campus accommodations are limited to the Culver Inn Motel. There is a block of rooms available to us the Inn Motel. The Alumni Office is taking reservations now. Call 574-842-7200 and the Alumni Secretary will be happy to assist you. The Inn Motel is located on the western edge of campus and provides easy access to on-campus reunion activities. The location cannot be beat and the price is right ($50 per night for a room with a private bath, heating, and air-conditioning, but no television or radio). Reunion Attire Fundamentally the reunion attire will be informal. Spouses and guests should dress informally, too. Flat shoes are recommended throughout the weekend. Our only dress-up event will be our class photo and dinner celebration that starts Saturday at 1830 hours Special Needs Please advise the alumni office staff if you have any special needs or dietary restrictions to accommodate so that your Culver weekend is as comfortable as possible.
