CONFERENCE GOAL The goal of the ONS Radiation econference is to engage learners in discussions about current trends in radiation oncology and the role of the radiation nurse in these therapies. CONFERENCE OBJECTIVES By the end of this conference, you will be able to: Summarize advances in radiation therapy for use in disease and symptom management. Identify innovative strategies to improve patient and staff safety related to radiation therapy. She ll focus on radiation therapy history, treatment goals, and a review of applied radiation physics. She ll also discuss radiation treatment planning, with an emphasis on simulation, delivery methods, dose delivery, patient positioning, and delivery of radiation. Friday, September 7, 11 AM Noon Total Body Irradiation Robert Price, PhD, DABR, FAAPM This session will describe the various methods used to deliver photon beam total body irradiation. Price will explain how to treat the patient safely using this modality by emphasizing physical parameters such as beam energy, beam modifying devices, beam data, patient positioning and immobilization, and in-vivo dosimetry. The presentation will also include a brief overview of the protocols and disease processes TBI is used for in bone marrow transplant patients. Oncology nurses need to be able to educate and prepare them about what to expect.
