PRESIDENT S MESSAGE Changing Lives. Changing Indiana. In the past year, Ivy Tech Community College has continued its remarkable transformation. Indiana Senate Enrolled Act 296, passed by the state legislature July 1, 2005, called on Ivy Tech to provide support to the state s employers and communities by meeting their needs for a better-educated workforce, and to provide educational opportunities and assessment to students, including those who want to earn credits that transfer to a four-year college. In short, you have asked big things from us, and we have risen to become the second largest institution of higher education in the state and we are on track to have the highest enrollment in Indiana in the near future. This annual report contains numbers, charts and graphs that illustrate our progress to date. My hope is that it also conveys the human side of our accomplishments. Our reach extends to Hoosiers of all ages and backgrounds, including those who may not have chosen to continue their training and education if not for Ivy Tech. Our impact is, without a doubt, felt most on a personal level in the lives of our students. More than 750,000 students have come through the doors of Ivy Tech since 1975. SETTING THE BAR HIGHER Our strategic plan for 2010 is titled From Success to the Best. Simply put, our success is critical to our state s future. Ivy Tech has enjoyed tremendous growth during recent years, and 2006 was no exception. No institution is more integral to improving this standing than Ivy Tech. Currently, just 21% of all full-time undergraduates in Indiana are enrolled in a community college, compared to 45% nationally. Our 2010 statewide enrollment goal anticipates an increase in Indiana s community college population, which will lead to increased education attainment at every post-secondary level. There is no single definition. Our student body is comprised of people of all ages, from all walks of life. Their goals are as diverse as they are, but as Ivy Tech students, they all have one thing in common: a brighter future. THE KEY TO OUR SUCCESS? UNDERSTANDING OUR STUDENTS NEEDS. At Ivy Tech, we know that most of our students cannot drop everything to attend college. Many are juggling demanding jobs and family obligations. More than 70% of our students have jobs, and 55.8% work 20 hours or more each week. Nearly 38% work 30 hours or more each week. Flexible class schedules, distance learning opportunities, and an array of support services make it possible for more students than ever before to balance their lives while pursuing a degree or certification from Ivy Tech. EDUCATION THAT WORKS It s a fact that a high school diploma provides only limited opportunities in today s economy. Workers with associate degrees earn more money and have access to a wider range of jobs than high school graduates and those with only some college credit. Ivy Tech offers degree programs that qualify students for careers in the fastest growing job sectors, including healthcare, technology, education, business, and public services. Students receive the latest training designed to meet the needs and standards of Indiana s employers. PROVIDING RELEVANT SKILLS THAT LEAD TO GOOD PAYING JOBS In a 2006 survey, 82% of 2004-05 Ivy Tech graduates reported that their employment was definitely or somewhat related to their Ivy Tech education. Perhaps most importantly, 90% rated their Ivy Tech education as excellent or good. Ivy Tech is giving my kids a quality education that will move them to the next level in their careers. GETTING STUDENTS STARTED ON A FOUR-YEAR DEGREE Thanks to our partnerships with other colleges and universities, credits from Ivy Tech transfer to many four-year schools, including the largest institutions in Indiana. As college debt rises, this allows many students who otherwise could not afford a bachelor s degree to complete their first two years at Ivy Tech at roughly half the cost of a four-year institution. These students may then transfer to complete their four-year degree, while incurring much less cumulative loan debt than they would otherwise assume. In addition to making college affordable, our transfer agreements help make students more successful. With two years at Ivy Tech, they get more time to adjust to college life and arrive on campus better prepared for the challenge. Students can also explore their career options while earning college credit. This results in a more fulfilling, rewarding career and better employability and earnings potential. INVESTING IN A FACULTY THAT INVESTS IN ITS STUDENTS Even with our rapid growth, class sizes at Ivy Tech remain small, at an average of 22 students. Personal attention and hands-on instruction, combined with tutoring services and extensive career advising, provide our students with an exceptional educational experience. Our students long track record of success is a direct result of our faculty s expertise and dedication. By focusing on the needs of each individual student, and by using examples direct from the workplace, our faculty help make an Ivy Tech education enjoyable, relevant, and current. ACCELERATED, CERTIFIED TRAINING The Ivy Tech Workforce and Economic Development department has a strong history of providing high-quality job skills training for employers and individuals throughout Indiana. Today, as we continue in our role as the state s workforce development engine, Ivy Tech is realigning its services to best meet the needs of our business and industry clients. The result is Accelerated, Certified Training (ACT), a division of Ivy Tech. ACT provides a variety of services, including employee skills assessment, customized training, fast-track courses, career development programs and online courses. Courses are offered at company sites or at Ivy Tech s facilities, and participants can earn nationally-recognized, portable credentials, including Continuing Education Units (CEUs) and workforce certifications from one of our 25 statewide testing centers. And now, with our Certification Crosswalk program, participants can receive academic credit when they complete a licensure or certification. The switch to ACT is much more than a name change: as we rebrand our services, we seek to better understand employers needs and deliver training that meet employers immediate needs, while remaining consistent with our reputation for quality. As Indiana s workforce needs change, Ivy Tech will be integral to ensuring that those needs are met. And through ACT, we are well positioned to collaborate with business and industry leaders to adapt as these needs change. Included among these grants are: US Department of Labor Community Based Job Training Grant Provides $2.5 million to blanket the state to train healthcare workers in allied health and nursing, in response to industry research on occupational shortages and educational needs US Department of Labor Grant for Advanced Manufacturing A $1.3 million grant targeting transportation-related advanced manufacturing that will provide training for 500 workers in Columbus, Lafayette, Richmond, Terre Haute, Madison, Evansville and Indianapolis Indiana Department of Workforce Development Major Opportunities Program Provides $1 million in funding dedicated to providing pre-apprenticeship training to women and minorities Indiana Department of Workforce Development SSI Grants A $5 million strategic skills initiative grant that will help Indiana offset job and skills shortages in hospitality, logistics, manufacturing and healthcare Ivy Tech also has the infrastructure to continue to build Indiana s workforce, with 25 certification testing centers statewide that collectively have the ability to give more than 2,000 certification tests. Last year, we awarded more than 7,000 certifications, giving Hoosiers improved skills that make them more employable and more productive. PARTNERING WITH DONORS While Ivy Tech Community College is one of seven state-assisted colleges and universities in Indiana, only two-thirds of its total funding is appropriated by the General Assembly. To keep tuition as low as possible, Ivy Tech relies on private, charitable support through Ivy Tech Foundation. Lilly Endowment Grant A $1.6 million grant from the Lilly Endowment will allow Ivy Tech to transform how it assists adults of all ages in getting prepared for college program-level courses by taking refresher classes to update their skills in math, reading and writing. Ivy Tech will serve as a national model delivering this education on site at the workplace, online and in various student-friendly formats.
